Very clever technique. The most important thing is not to cut into the top 2-3 inches when you put the saw into the cut for the second time. All the compression comes onto those few inches at the top, allowing you to cut through the tension side freely. Thanks.

I was dubious of this when I heard your first description, but when watching, I now understand that you are letting the top touch when it pinches and you leave that alone..... go down below that slightly and then cut back in to form the new gap. Good tip and now it makes sense to me.

Good tips. I do like using a wedge sometime when the log is close to the ground so I don’t hit the dirt. Kind of a security blanket.

I do two, or even three, top cuts about an inch apart, after the gap starts to close. If it does pinch, you can almost always break it down with a sledge.

you can also cut a small v in the top before you start cutting through. i usually end up cutting from the bottom most of the time.

This is super hard even with wedges.. it’s super hard to not get pinched and can with proper technique and it’s a tree looked this.. takes a lot of time now how much time nose in or not to do cuts like this. It’s you gonna do it wrong 1000x before you ever do it right

Depending on the amount of pressure and size of the tree it can split the log. I use both methods but this is the one I use when I know it has high pressure.

Walnut will split if fairly easily if cut just from the bottom. This really comes into play as the better the tree the easier it will split.
