I wonder if with enough practice that this could be more efficient than a touch interface even for those that aren't visually impaired. Sort of a chording keyboard.

Jeremy S Cook someone else told me about a chordic keyboard. It didn't take me long to use grade 1 braille, but more advanced Braille users use grade 2, which is all abrivated, and can match the speed of writing, when using a Braille typewriter.

I have a question... we're sort of working on the same project, but I didn't know about this project and the concept on the device's design is the same as well, were also using arduino as our microcontroller to talk to an app, the question is.. can we copy the design of the 6 buttons for input? because it is the most efficient way to type braille.. wish you could reply it's for our thesis project..

Sorry for the late reply, of course you can. Everything is released Open source, just be sure to give credit & reference to the original project.

Really nice project! congrats on your award. I'm working at teaching math to blind people at Mexico, and this project of yours would help them a lot to improve! Just wondering if may be compatible with spanish. Regards

This is exactly the right idea. Make it look like a regular keyboard to the drivers; and then voiceover isn't necessary. This would be usable by sighted people that want a chorded keyboard. kwerty will never be a good phone keyboard. Perkins would be way better.
