I need this to be shared worldwide because I was born in Jamaica but grew up in America since 1972 Iam now 61 and am tired of Americans saying that an American rapper started speed rapping
@bsadewitz2 жыл бұрын
I have spent some time trying to get to the bottom of this. I gave up. Who was "first" depends on where one chooses to draw the line between rap and something else, and I don't have the training in research methodology nor the historical background to have an opinion. I freely grant you that the Jamaican contribution is both integral and generally neglected--but what else is new? @_@ Ultimately, it goes all the way back to Africa.

Great bit of footage Mark! Amazing how ignorant Amanda de Cadenet was about what she was introducing at the club. Tippa was already a household name by then! 😅 I think this clip is from early 1991 as Michelle Collins (guest presenter probably?) mentions the Gulf War which started in January of that year
@markchestermusic9 ай бұрын
Great to see you round these parts Kev! You're right of course, must have been early '91. Those days I unwrapped a 180 min VHS and hovered over Rec/Pause for anything remotely interesting on TV This was at the very end of the tape so the following year. I think Amanda was more interested in Duran Duran haha. Can't believe this old damaged off air recording reached not only Tony in the front row but also Peter Hardman the Environmental Health Officer who measured the crowd forwards!! Got more stuff on VHS but have been frustrated by KZbin blocking so much due to music copyright. Might have to give it another try soon though
@kevmaccormack45139 ай бұрын
@@markchestermusic Ha! I do get around mate. As someone from one of our haunts said, "I'm f*@!%*g everywhere"😂 I'm sure de Cadenet later married John Taylor from Duran Duran. Her replacement on the show Dani Behr was much more informed musically.

@markchestermusic2 жыл бұрын
The Mikey Dread on the earlier unseen segment was the late Bristol based radio DJ Mikey Dread, rather than the Jamaican radio DJ/singer/deejay Mikey Dread Campbell, also sadly now departed
@silvabakx63962 жыл бұрын
@@markchestermusic Ahhh, ok. Thanks for clarifying that point. Yea, I know a local (living) Mikey Dread too. Yo, wicked show, classic rare footage! I actually got to drum for Tippa on a few shows many years ago when he was chillin in the LA area. I called some heads quick to form a pick up band to fill in for a band that had cancelled at a local pub on reggae night. Guess who randomly shows up at the gig! We gave him the mic, he blew up of course, leaned back off the mic & asked me "What's the name of this band?" I had to think fast & come up with something cool on the spot (which I did). He introduced us to the audience, & the rest is history. Most successful band I've had so far. Tippa was the spark. Give thnx!

Mark Chester, how did you get this video..???😳 I’m blown away. There was the best of the word on channel 4 bout 15 years ago but was only a short clip so only saw myself a couple of times. This video though you can see me multiple times at the front, even waving behind Amanda De Cadnet at the end. I remember getting there early and making friends with the camera man. We told him to keep the camera on us, he said only if we move a lot , hence the reason camera focused on me few times…no lot of the time. Brilliant just brilliant now I can share with my friends…😀😀🙌🏽
@markchestermusic3 жыл бұрын
I sight you Tony😂 When you were in the Malcolm X Centre I had my finger hovering over the Record button on my parents' Phillips VHS recorder in Somerset. Really pleased it meant so much to you to discover the clip. Earlier on the tape was an appearance by Mikey Dread (RIP) but with sound issues. Might put it up here if you're interested. I've more bits on VHS but have found it frustrating to be informed by KZbin that the music has been flagged as copyrighted so likely to be muted. I should go through some more tapes still though. Hope you're still into music and going out to places when you can. Thanks for leaving your comment🙏🏻
