The death has been announced of the Tipperary hurling great, Jimmy Doyle, who passed away on Monday 22 June 2015, aged 76.
Doyle, from the Thurles Sarsfields club, won six All-Ireland senior hurling medals in the period from 1958 to 1971, as well as nine Munster titles. He also captained Tipperary to All-Ireland victory in 1962 and 1965 and was an All-Ireland runner-up on three occasions.
He was the holder of seven National League medals and was also an eight-time Railway Cup winner with Munster.
At club level, Doyle won 10 Tipperary County Championship medals with Thurles Sarsfields.
In 1984 he was named on the Hurling Team of the Century to mark the centenary of the GAA; he was also named on the Hurling Team of the Millennium in 1999.
In all, Doyle made 39 championship appearances for Tipperary and was top scorer for the championship in 1958, ’60, ’61, ’62 and ’64.
By the time of his retirement, he was Tipperary's all-time top scorer with a career tally of 18 goals and 176 points. This was a record which stood until 2007 when Eoin Kelly edged out in front.
Doyle began his hurling career in goal, like his late father Gerry, and he won his first Munster minor medal for Tipperary in the position in 1954.
Although Tipperary were beaten by Dublin in that year's All-Ireland final, Doyle would go on to win the first of three All-Ireland minor medals the next year, now playing outfield, following up in 1956 and as captain in 1957. During the same period, 1954-57, he won four county minor hurling titles, and a Dr Harty Cup Medal with Thurles CBS in 1956.
Doyle made his senior debut for Tipperary in the 1957-58 league campaign, going on to play until the 1973 championship.
Thurles Town Council paid tribute to Doyle when they opened the Jimmy Doyle Road in his honour in 2012, a road many a supporter now travels on their way to Semple Stadium.
Paying tribute to Doyle, Tipperary County Board Chairman Michael Bourke said: "The name of Jimmy Doyle will never and should never be forgotten.
"He was the ultimate sticks-man, a master of his craft not alone of his own age but for all ages. He inspired countless hurlers who wanted to be Jimmy Doyle and who craved the genius he bore with such humility and grace.
"Tipperary and Thurles has lost one of its greatest sons the likes of whom we may never witness again."

One of the greatest hurling footballing people that I ever met was a neighbour of mine, a young boy of about 10 years of age who went around the village commentating on imaginary games using the voice of Michael O’Hehir. we used to follow this boy around as he went about his daily work including collecting buckets of fresh spring water from the local pump, this young boy could name every single player that played for each of these imaginary teams, he would give a brief history and some of the players their background even their personalities, he told about the ref, the thousands of people attending those games. To us young children it was like being at a hurling or football All-Ireland final, I do not know what became of the young boy from our village as later I left to wonder though foreign lands but I never forget the young boy who brought films into our minds about the greatest games and players that never really existed in real life

Had the pleasure of seeing him play in the 2nd half of his career. A genius of the ash, caused so much heartache for my Limerick.
