would this fix work for a torn off back cover, where the binding is still attached to pages, but the actual back cover flap is torn off? I can't seem to find a fix for a cover in this condition.

When you slide the page when tipping-in there is going to be a excess of glue that is going to get on the other pages, are you using anything to protect the other sheets from the glue, so that the pages do not stick together?

Yes! It is important to place a sheet of waxed paper on each side of the page you are repairing. -KB
