Julianne's portrait quilt book is the best one I've seen. I've been quilting for 32 years. Her directions are simple and straightforward. Her starter projects are a great way to experiment and learn. Also, get her color tool. You will see color in an entirely different light.

Thank you for disclosing your lack of needle changing. I always use an 80-12 except when I did garment making and worked with lame or similar fabric. But quilting cotton, I just use my basic needle. Have a wonderful New Year Day off.
