If friends and relatives want a piece of your art I believe that you need to charge them something so you know they appreciate your effort in its creation. If people are willing to pay then they are committed to owning it and the place to hang it. You did a fabulous job!

Once upon a time I was a difficult client. I didn’t mean to be. It boiled down to me not communicating properly what I was looking for. But we cleared that up and I ended up buying two paintings. The fact that she made a video of the first one made me want it. 😁 But Tortured Souls was by far exactly what I was looking for. I love it!

How to determine what it cost to do a painting and what a fair profit amount would be is the knowledge I'm needing most. GREAT information Molly! Thank you. I've had so far 13 commissions - I'd say 11 of them loved them and actually 9 of those just wanted the colors and size of canvas - was not fussed about style. I've had one 'bummer' - lady wanted a HUGE canvas - sent me her colors and what style - before I even started painting I told her the price and she cancelled it. I thought the price was MORE than fair for the size and hassle it would be drying it etc... but hey 12 out of 13 happy customers is not so bad so far. Had one customer commission 3 paintings for different rooms in her house! That was amazing. xxxx

Molly thank you so much for this which i find brilliantly informative to me. I have been on this journey for a year now and am very critical of my work and a perfectionist in both the quality and finish of the painting as well as the painting composition and colours so actually only have seven pieces I love which my family have taken or I have in my walls. However now my sons friends are wanting me to do things for them and saying I should have my art work online somewhere… I am retired and to do all this seemed overwhelming to where and how I start to do this. Thank you for the information, Molly. I was a professional painter for about 12 years while also working full time, then quit when it became "not so fun" with all the commissions I had. It was pressure I put on myself and it really took a toll on my mental well-being at the time to where I stopped painting completely. I have recently started again and appreciate you sharing so openly about commissions. I'd love to see a future video about pricing. I know how I do it, but wonder how you (and others) do it as well. Us artists have to support each other. And as you say, it really is about the clients and their love of our art.

Great advice! I do want to thank you again for the closed captioning. Whenever you said 50% I was hearing 15%... I know... my cray cray ear. Only one ear works! Too funny! When I was a young teen, a brand new mall in Boca Raton had a bunch of Pollock paintings on display for the grand opening. For months, daily after school I would hang out there. They were only cordoned off with velvet ropes. I actually got away with touching several of them. I fell in love with the genre. So, automatic follow. I absolutely love how you have carried on the tradition. Definitely a future customer!

Oh Molly thank you so much for this! I have suddenly gotten a lot of commissions and I did very poorly with the first 2 in my communication. I’ve basically told the others that I will get with them before I start on their painting so this is perfect! So what if a customer gives a handful of colors and a size then says surprise me and gives you no guidance? I had that happen and I was sweating bullets to see if she would like it. Fantastic info Molly! I wish more people would share the behind the scenes stuff as it is so important for young artists starting out and we forget how hard that was, when we have been doing it for a long time. My favourite part was when you spoke about realising that it wasn't about just you and that the buyers experience with the painting is what is important. I think that is something that a lot of artists forget is different when they are creating commissions as opposed to making art for the art or the fun of it. It seems like just another way to sell paintings but don't realise how different the responsibility of a commission really is. Having a client understand that can sometimes be extremely difficult too.
