Bicycles are equipped with drivetrains. Drivetrains are a group of components that make the bicycle move. The components in a drivetrain are; 1- crankset 2- chain and 3-casette. Shimano is one of the many manufacturers of drivetrain components. They make several models of drivetrain components at different price ranges. Single model of drivetrain is known as a groupset and a groupset contains the following parts; 1- shifters 2- brake levers 3- disc/rim brakes 4- crankset 5-chain 6- front derailleur 7- rear derailleur 8- cassette. Other manufacturers of drivetrains are 1- microshift 2- campagnolo 3- sram 4-box etc. You don't need to concern yourself with these other manufacturers at the moment. Lets take a look at shimano's groupset hierarchy. Shimano makes different groupsets for mtb, roadbikes, gravel bikes etc. For now, lets only focus on roadbikes and mtbs. Mtbs- (name of groupset and speeds) Tourney tz - 3x7 Tourney ty - 3x7 Tourney tx - 3x8 Altus 2/3x8 Altus shadow 1/2/3x9 Acera 3x8 Acera shadow 1/2/3x9 Alivio 2/3x9 Deore 1x10/11/12 SLX 1x11/12 Zee 1x12 Saint 1x12 XT 1x12 XTR 1x12. Roadbike groupsets ( name of the groupset and speeds) Shimano A050 1x7 Tourney 2/3x7 Claris 2/3x8 Sora 2/3x9 Tiagra 2x10 Shimano 1o5 2x11 Shimano Ultegra 2x11 Shimano Ultegra DI2 (DI 2 means electronic shifting) 2x11 Shimano Dura Ace 2x11 Shimano Dura Ace DI 2 2x11.
