First, I want to thank you for all the times you have helped me figure out a new song that our church is introducing. I also appreciate how much you enjoy each other and are passionate about what you do for God. Great encouragement for those of us who do give our time and effort to be excellent for God. Finally, thank you for being down to earth enough to mention Steve Lukather who is simply one of the all around greatest guitar players in the last 40+ years, I can hear his tasteful playing in a worship service!

We have one Sunday service. Same team each weekend. We rehearse through the entire set Sunday morning and what we'll play through announcements / offering whatever. If we're learning a new song is the only time we really practice outside of a Sunday morning rehearsal. We expect team members to practice their parts during the week with the tracks provided. Works out pretty good and having faithful people on the team is 100% essential. Best way to weed out unfaithful people and lose half your team is having them to sit up front each service hahah! You know what, it worked out in the long run!

Our church practices at 8am for our 10:45 service and it’s going alright but I totally agree there needs to be an additional practice day so that Sunday is a run thru not learning the set and transitions. Great video. Post more practical things like this because they’re so useful to hear as a third party buffer to worship leaders who don’t quite get it and struggle with the things you mentioned on the clip. Instead of me being the bad guy I can just send the video as a “suggestion” lol😂

Hey, Boomer ...our church holds first rehearsal on Thursday evening 7 to 9, then we are to practice that Package at least once on our own, before Sunday 8 a.m. rehearsal for 9 a.m. service. For me, I get to practice twice before Sunday, not just because I love playing, but I love worshipping God musically. Yep, sometimes we still make mistakes during the services, but they are minimized because of the numbers of times we have practiced the song. We aren’t performance-focused so much as we are confident to play with undistracted excellence ( not my term, but it is a good descriptor.) God bless you and your team. Cheers, Bill

Thanks guys!! God bless you! I play on a worship team at a large church. Like you guys we play 2 services one at 9 am and one at 10:30. We show up at 7AM on Sunday mornings. Have a 45 minute practice/review of what we did during the midweek rehearsal on Thursdays. Sometimes Tuesdays if we have a holiday on Thursday or something going on where we can't rehearse on Thursdays. During Rehearsal we have a 2 hour window to run something familiar to set in-ear mixes then run a new song , run the set. Then finalize transitions, rune the set again and conclude. I like this format and have been getting used to it over the past 2 years I've been on my new team. I was a part of a small conglomeration where we only practiced on Sunday mornings at 8 AM we would rehearse for an hour and have Sunday morning class at 9Am. I was involved in another secular country/rock band at the time. I was playing out almost every weekend. Sometimes on Fridays but most of the time on Saturdays. Then dragging myself to church or all out skipping which wasn't the best choice at the time. The way we did things we didn't really have lead guitar players, we had bass, drums, keys a 12 string acoustic and I played electric and bass and rotated with other people. We mainly had the same people on instruments week to week My band at the time I was in didn't have a place to rehearse for awhile so we used the churches basement which had a youth room in it and a small PA. I would borrow things from the main team stage, mic stands and a mic or two and some cables we didn't have at the time. There were times I admit after shows on Saturdays we didn't get things put back in the right spot causing frustration for the team on Sunday. The pastor and pastor's wife are the main leaders. Close to the time my time would be done there I admit I became negative and the kind of person you guys talked about who didn't want to be be around. My role in the church there was on the worship team and running sound about once a month and preparing Sunday morning projection as well. Sometimes we had things planned out by Friday afternoon if not later. Which was also a frustration. So I was removed from the team, but yet I still felt called to be involved in a group. I had left the small church where I was at and had no idea what i would do or where I would go next. I was also let go from the band I was in which hurt even more too. During this time after I left the church and removed from the team, because I was frustrated/hurt and had a lot of emotions happening at the same time I didn't know what to do. I had a friend of mine from work tell me about another church and say I could get involved there. I went there and had an awesome experience my first Sunday I was there. I had noticed all the musicians on stage who where playing all the parts of the song and I mean ALL the parts instead of chords and singing. Which at my last church we didn't do. I had attempted to play some small lead parts but for whatever reason the section was forgot about. I auditioned after taking the Alpha course and got a call from the worship arts director. Then things just took off from there. I later learned to find out that in church I'm at now I new several people that attend from friends to family members and other relations from other friends at another church which I was apart of that closed. So despite all the hardships/issues and problems/negativeness where there things I could of done differently? I think so. But yet the situation I'm in now I really don't want to change or I wish I could of been there sooner. The past is the past and I realize that now and can't change it. This is a learning experience for me, was I not right in making the decision I did or do you think I needed space away from that situation and time to reflect?

Loved how informational this video is!! Btw could you guys possibly do a video on transitions and how to do them as seamlessly as possible? I've always found transitions as a little difficult and especially being the keyboard player it's hard to switch synths and a click and to begin playing all within a few seconds.

This hits way too close to home. I go to a small church. We have about 6 people playing/singing. We meet at 8:30 for a 10:30 service. We only practice until Sunday school at 9:30. We have only an hour total, but the person on staff who plans it all out gets there right at 8:30 and still needs to print music, set-up, etc. On top of that, we are rarely given the music and keys before Friday or Saturday. We live in a perpetual state of 'getting by'. It aggravates me to no end. I have offered to help get it all ready sooner, but nothing comes of it.

Cory Settoon it would be a great thing to comunícate it with the worship leader as advice to possibly have the songs 5 days in advance, and I say 5 days instead of a week . Because people don’t usually read the “one “ week or 1 week part , but a 5 is more in my humble opinion a pointer and likely to see. Let him/ her if they can please send the chords or song list in advance because Friday or Saturday it’s just not enough time. If you explain to them in a low level good spirit Iam sure if they are in the right kind hearted spirit they will improve. The reason Iam responding is bc same thing is true about your times of starting etc and musicians and it has work . Try it and be bless.

I sing in our praise band, and I fumbled through our first song yesterday, but I had a good reason....maybe. We use studiolive 32 series II digital mixer, and somehow the vocal monitors got messed up between our sound check and the first sound and there was major feedback coming through the monitors. They were much louder then when we finished our sound check. I had UCsurface on my iPad so I could play with sound settings ( which I only use during sound check for monitor configuration ), and when the feedback happened we were singing; and I was letting the sound guy correct the issue. However halfway through the song I couldn't stand the feedback anymore and brought the vocal monitors down. So the first song was kind of not the best, and because of that I was a little nervous through out the service when we sang. We still don't know how the vocal monitors got messed up though which is the most frustrating part.

Toto is one of the single best rock bands that came out of that era. Jeff Porcaro basically invented the modern pop drum beat. Lukather is just a top notch player, and has a solid voice. And not many know that Joseph Williams is the frontman now. the son of the one and only John Williams. They still put on a great show if they come close to you.

Hey, WT! I'm involved in worship as a vocalist and acoustic guitarist at my church. I'll begin leading here soon as well, but my question to you is how you'd suggest building/growing worship when at a smaller church-plant that rents space. I get there at 7am (service is at 10) to start setting up the sound equipment every Sunday. Most other worship team people don't show up for about an hour to 1.5 hours after that due to family schedules (having young kids), etc. It's hard to vision growing or building it up too much when we're not yet in our own space (it's in a vocational school and we set up and tear down everything every weekend). Thoughts? Words of encouragement? I think that it may end up being a situation where we just pray about it, work the best we can with what we have and trust God's timing for finding a permanent place.

Hi WT, we all love the latest gear and tech and also the stage components of performances. It is sad that we don't speak or better yet teach on the excellence of the Spiritual side of Worship because Worship is simply a performance without the spiritual dedication of it all. it might sound old school or religious but there is no doubt , that Worship has become more about tech and performance over recent years! or are we afraid we lose subscribers if we speak about the spiritual part of Worship!
@worshiptutorials6 жыл бұрын
Technology is indeed becoming more and more prevalent, but I agree that spiritual leadership is the most important. This video itself is actually about spiritual leadership. We have dozens and dozens of other videos covering it as well. Check out our ‘Worship Leader Wednesday’ series.
@brianmichaelfuller6 жыл бұрын
Hello, we actually have a lot of content on those topics as well! Feel free to search through previous videos and find tons of topics such as those. The focus of these videos is to equip the church with content that they can't simply find easily accessible in their environments... their are a ton of resources out there on how to grow spiritually and while we feel that is ABSOLUTELY THE most important thing to be an effective leader, we try to focus on a more practical approach to train and equip worship leaders everywhere and resource them with information based on our diverse and vast experiences as worship leaders in the local church. At some point we have to narrow the content otherwise these videos would all be 5 hours long and would become moot points. None of this practical approach is meant to be a replacement or substitute for spiritual maturity...

Well shoot, when you have the same worship band members for a decade straight, all it takes is teaching them the song once. Usually, this means leading it with just acoustic for the whole congregation and giving the team a copy of the chord chart to follow along. We then own the song henceforth.

I lead worship at my youth group and I am really wanting to put together a full band but am having trouble finding musicians that are qualified enough to play the music I think the kids will respond too. Right now I just lead with an acoustic guitar and that’s it how do I find good musicians?
@GaryLBaileyJr6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacob. What has worked for me is to first pray about God bringing you the right people (if through this process God may be glorified). During the time you are praying for God's provision cast a vision to your adults in the church and the teens of the type of band you are wanting to put together. Find the teens that have an interest in wanting to learn how to play an instrument or even better find the teens that are already in a high school band playing trumpet or clarinet or saxophone or something. You can print out the notes of a bass guitar put it on the music stand and a kid who already has music background can pick up on it really fast. If you find someone that knows how to play basic piano chords have them teach a teen how to do that you can always write the root note on a piece of Scotch tape on the keyboard and someone who is already musically inclined can literally play piano in 15 minutes. When looking for a drummer if they don't know how to play a full drum set you can buy a cajon for $99 and they can have a basic beat on that and they will all get excited about getting better. The harder part will be working with your new singers. The reason I say this is because everybody thinks they can sing but until you put a mic up to them most of the time unless they know how to sing they will sing usually a little flat and that's just an opportunity for you to let them know and get their permission to help teach and coach them and for little to no money they can easily take vocal lessons and improve. The most important things are to lead through prayer, cast a vision, develop relationships and inspire them to always get better.
