Balancing the boat is done by keeping the correct height of the handle: push the handle down on the side that comes up. If you have your hands on the height difference set on the oarlocks during the whole stroke you automatically balance. Keep your body up straight and never use it to balance. Only hand height balances. Also keep your elbows close to the body and never tense your grip. Keep your hands loose like a monkey swinging in a tree. Om shanti and enjoy.

Question from a strictly armchair observer. Would using a slip catch , the sculls riding on the water on the recovery be easier? My inexperience is obvious.

For learners, yes dragging on the water is easier for balancing the boat. But for blades off the water, it takes practice feeling the weight in the hands during the recovery.
