3 Valve was the more problematic one. Issues with plugs, timing, and maintenance problems. But, we've gotten to the point that a lot of those trucks have had the factory plugs replaced and the updated plug design does not have the same issues with being removed. Also, don't run the factory plugs out to 180k miles, you're asking for problems. Pull a coil and look at the top of the spark plug, factory plugs had a paint mark on the back of the plugs, not always a 100% guaranteed indicator, but it is accurate most of the time. Yes, coils do fail, maybe a little more often than some others, but it's not a deal-breaker in my opinion. Also, always use Ford coils to replace. The coils usually run at about 7 amps, and stay pretty consistent with the factory coils. But, the factory coils are actually roughly 14 amp coils. which means they build to 7 amps quickly and easier than if they were designed as 7 amp coils. Aftermarket coils will vary on peak current draw, even on the same coil during different firing events, this can cause false codes and just be a big headache. So, always remember to use Ford coils and, in this area, people will often replace all 8 coils if one goes bad, because I've seen too many cases of a truck coming in with a CEL and misfire, replace a coil, maybe 2. Then, 2 or 3 weeks later it's back and 2 other coils have failed, then a month later 2 more have failed. Recommending to replace all of the coils is not ripping the customer off so long as it's communicated to them why you are recommending it, and it's obviously their choice to replace the 1 needed or all of them. And, possibly most important, is the maintenance. Never, ever, ever, ignore the maintenance of an engine, especially a 5.4 3V I can say with confidence that I personally have never seen one of these trucks have cam phaser issues or timing issues if the maintenance was kept up to date and a good quality oil and Ford oil filter was used for every single oil change and every single oil change was done within the recommended time and mileage guidelines. Quick Tech Tip for removing factory plugs: Get the engine hot, run a fuel system cleaner, like the BG Injector cleaner. As the Injector service is close to ending, go through and remove the bolts for all the coils and leave them setting where they are (engine still running). As soon as the engine dies when the injector service is over, quickly pull all the coils and take a 3/8 butterfly impact a 3/8 impact wobble joint, a 3 inch extension, and a plain chrome 9/16 socket and zip the plugs out. I have never once broken one of these plugs using this method. If you do break a plug it's probably going to be #4 or #8. Sorry, when I started typing, I didn't intend for it to be this long. DIY Auto Homeschool do coils fail my 2004 hemi has the originals at 220 none yet?? no my bros ford is on its 15th or 16 coil in 4 years hey its only 500 bucks $50 at a time for those coils no biggie fuck him!! he doesn't need the money they bought a ford

Nope, the Two valve spit spark plugs all the time. Many Many people have had to have multiple heli coil jobs done on them. The poorest design ever, barely four threads actually holding the plug in the head. Absolute JUNK.

@@gregg4164 that's only a problem with the non Pi headed Triton engines, mainly the 97-98 models & some early model 99's. The 2v engine with the Pi heads have more threads in the head & they flow much better which accounted for the power increase

I have a 2005 f150 5.4L 3 v with 177k miles on it and it has always had oil changed 5w30 every 3k miles with mobile 1 full synthetic and motocraft filter yet it has the hot idle cam phaser knock. I'm hoping it's just the cam phaser locking pin making some noise and not a big deal but with the history of these motors I'm a little nervous. Also it is now using 1/2 quart of oil every 700 miles so I'm thinking either the pcv valve need changed which means a new valve cover since it's built into it or a leaky valve seal or a ring not seated. I tried ats chemical 505 cro engine cleaner and it still uses 1/2 quart in 700 miles.

I've owned trucks from dodge, toyota, chevrolet, ford, nissan and the only one i still own is that ford f150 with the 5.4. Has never failed me or left me stranded. Going on 10 years now.

deftonesfan81 16 years on my 2v 5.4l Only at 195,000 did I finally need head gasket work which was the biggest non wear item I've had fail.

im at 201,513 and still haven't changed head gaskets but do plan on over hauling the engine. All ive done is kept up on the oil change every three thousand miles. Love my truck!

I had a 98 Durango 5.9 4x4 and I drove that thing to the ends of the earth. I changed the oil every 3000 miles and whenever I finally sold it, it had 266,000 miles, and that was when the original transmission started having problems. The problem was relatively minor, it just didn't like to shift out of first on its own, but at that point I had the truck for almost 10 years and wanted something else. The guy I sold it to pulled the engine apart and told me there wasn't even ring ridge in the cylinders. Maintenance is the key to any engine's longevity.

I’ve had a 2009 5.4 3v since new and maintained it properly since the day it came off the lot. The engine has been relatively problem free, in 2013 the a/c clutch went, in 2018 the passenger side exhaust manifold bolts broke, and in 2022 in needed new VCT solenoids. I just took it on a multi day road trip and got just over 20 mpg or 11.6 l/100 kms with it. For a full size V-8 truck I’m happy with that.

Mine was still new when I got it just over 145.000 miles an about to lift it my wife wants it lifted we used to four wheel in Kentucky never done much here yet AZ so look forward to seeing whoever out there

my father bought a 06 f150 5.4 3v in 08 with about 32k on it. from then, he daily drove it from Hudson fl to Tampa fl for the next 4 years. then we started a lawn maintenance business and we drove 6 days a week with a trailer and two toro zero-turns. only major problem through its live were a blown alternator at about 170k, and periodic coil failures every two-three years. we racked up over 200k on that truck, all original, and one of those plugs stripped the head, and we could not afford the fix. would still highly recommend the truck and engine to anyone asking. just take care of your stuff and it will last. ford, chevy, dodge, what ever. take care of it!

I would agree but coming from a company with 4 well maintained ford f150's w/ the tritons. "Monthly checkups @ the dealership" 2 of them have had sparkplugs shoot out, 2004 models. One of the 2008's ended up blowing up on the side of the highway while going 110km/h and the other is fine, All went in for monthly maintenance, the motor just isnt that reliable from experience. Luck of the draw I guess

spot on with everything you said.i've seen these problems over and over.in my experience most problems are due to lack of maintenance.for some odd reason people laugh when I tell them there isn't oil on the dipstick but cry when I tell them their engine is shot....and I'm the thief....people usually steal from themselves....sad. great vid

That’s because you have the reliable 2 valve 5.4. This is referring to the 04-09 5.4 3 valve with the cam phasers that crash the motor from 800 to 200,000 miles.

650k mile same engine still running great! Full synthetic oil with full synthetic Lucas they'll run forever if you don't change the oil or take care of them they won't last long at all. when it comes to spark plugs the two valves you got a torque them to Specs when you change them. if you don't you'll strip the threads or they'll come loose. the three valves have a different style plug in a certain method to take them out.

Thank you for good mechanical analysis. I have gotten reliable service from my 1999 Ford E350 van with 5.4 SOHC two valve head using 5W-30 synthetic oil and flowmaster FX muffler. Currently have 185400 on odometer. 5W is a must to ensure proper lubrication of cams on top of engine with close tolerances and smaller diameter tubing. Proper smooth exhaust flow maintains positive pressure on valves, followers, springs with even mild temperature. Flowmaster or stock system will yield 13 to 16 mpg town and highway, whereas another muffler I had diminished mpg to 9 1/2 to 10 mpg, similar to flowmaster or Ford stock exhaust pulling a double axle 4,500 lb U Haul trailer. 4"+ long stroke on 5.4 -- extremely strong block, crank and main bearings. Block and head material is so bullet proof on 5.4 that completely stock block and heads were used in bi turbo 2,000 HP 5.4 with billet forged internals installed in 2002 Ford GT40 that achieved 300.4 mph in 5th gear at 9000 rpm in Texas.

I have a F150 5.4 2 valve with 410,000 miles and runs perfectly. I run 0w20 and/or 0w30 oil which seems to make it start up quicker and quieter. Honestly it runs (and sounds) perfectly. I drive it conservatively, but don't baby it either. Original powertrain.

Excellent video and advice... I highly recommend on the 2 valve 5.4L (it's what I have) using the CALVAN Spark ⚡️ Plug Insert Kit... to prevent the engine from spitting out the plugs... due to Ford only providing 4-1/2 threads in the heads for the spark plug to hold on too... the CALVAN stainless steel insert corrects this unacknowledged manufacturer problem...

I have a 2001 F150 with 5.4 V8. I got it brand new, and kept it well maintained and I've never had any major issues, still have it today with 150k miles and it runs great! I highly recommend this truck/this style engine.

I had the 2000 E 250 with the 5.4,i got rid of it with 285k miles. No major problems at all with the engine, I had the trans rebuilt @165k. But overall it was a great truck!

You explained that very well, Charles. I read some of the comments below and find it somewhat confusing. Some say that the 5.4 is junk, even the one who says it's junk at 258k. Does he think it should last to a million k to be acceptable? Nobody mentions that a GM or a Dodge or Toyota has any problems. I guess i get them all at my shop for repairs because i see them all the time. Ford does have problems with the 5.4 but so does other brands. I service some fleets of all 3 and i think i know how it is at least in my opinion. I would say that the most troublesome engine is the 3.7 and the 4.7 L. Dodge The 5.7 L Hemi is a little better but not much. I have replaced two GM engines, a 5.3 L and a 6.0 L with spun rod bearings for no apparent reason as well as hearing the complaints about cold engine noise and oil burning/leaking. Cracked heads are common as well. About 70% of the trucks i service are 2 and 3 valve Fords, a few with over 400K and i have not had to do engine repairs on any of them. No chains, Phasers, oil pumps or head gaskets. Broken spark plugs and bad coils happen on some of them, sometimes as well as broken exhaust manifold bolts. There are more Ford trucks on the road than the others so i guess we hear more about them and their problems.

If you maintain your vehicle you’ll have minimal issues, the problem comes when you don’t change fluids and keep it happy.

I have a 1999 F150 with the 5.4 v8. Purchased it with 68k miles. It has 310,000 on it now. Maintain the vehicle properly, oil changes every 3,000 miles. Replaced the coil pack. Lower and upper front end suspension mostly normal wear and tear related. Purchased a Blue Driver scanner have been able to identify problems and get them addressed. Replaced the OBDE sensor ran a gallon of lacquer thinner in 10 gallons of gas recently. The repair fixed the code the computer identified. Running strong no codes. Engine light off. 😎👍Looking for a new / used F150 with 80,to 100k miles. Will run this one till then.

use an endoscope camera on a cell phone to look under the valve cover for sludge. Do this for any used vehicle you are considering purchasing

i bought my one and only new truck in the fall of 03. brand new 2004, f150 scab fx4 with the 5.4L, 3V triton. put 33,000 on it the first year and it now has just about 180,000K on it. it has had one tune up on it at about 70,000. i have neglected it at times and only brought it to the dealer once for a recall. aside from basic stuff like brakes and fluid changes, i have myself replaced both hubs up front, all vacuum lines for the hub locks rotted out and have yet to be replaced. tranny overdrive o-ring failure, drive shaft universals (with those stupid splines), rear axle seals & bearings, stupid leaking 3rd taillight, swapped outs all shocks struts (driver side spring had cracked clean in half) with spacer installed, a couple of exhausts, various electrical issues (heater fan, interior lights), batteries, starters, alternators and now i am ready to pull the valve covers and front cover to do a complete timing job. all of this BS and i am not even close to being a mechanic. with the help of youtube videos i have done each and every job myself. all that said my biggest complaint is how the underbody of this truck, is rotting away from rust. i have holes in the frame, the exhausts, various other parts that were replaced. the body panels are close to brand new. i put aftermarket shit on it and people are sometimes amazed that its an 04. i have probably saved 10-15 grand or more doing all this work myself outside of warranty. i refuse to pay 50-60 grand on a new truck to encounter various push to market engineering flaws and deficiencies ever again. my advice would be to learn the vehicle you are happy with. the good thing about fords is that there is so many on the road and with issues, that someone else has solved the problem for you already. last but not least......a wise man once said. why pay someone else to screw up your truck when you can do that yourself.

I bought a 1999 Ford F-250 with 117k Miles and is currently at 165k over a 5 year period. Great engine, I think you covered the main hiccups with it, that I’ve had personally. Spark plugs and ignition coils. I think the spark plugs are the most annoying because the engine sits so far back toward the firewall the last 4 are really tricky to get to. But overall a solid engine IMO

I had a 2004 F150 with the 5.4. After i bought the truck it started to sound like a diesel at idle. Got Cam Phasers, vct solenoids replaced and the car lot i got it from claims they replaced the timing chain and timing component but i dont think they actually did. But after those repairs engine was so quiet. It ran extremely well. Those problems are very well know. but you take care of those problems you have a very good engine.

Gotta love how an engine gets an infamous reputation for regularly lasting 300,000 miles. The only issue Ford deserves an ass reaming for, is not using steel threaded inserts for the spark plug bosses. Aside from that, who doesn't expect cam followers to fail at nearly 200,000 miles (or in my case, 300,000)? That's like expecting valves to never be adjusted with a solid lifter cam.

Good video. I totally agree with you 100% I think the 5.4 3 valve gets a bad rap. I own a construction company and I've had 30 of them in F150s and F250s and I haven't had any engine or Cam failures with them but of course I maintain them.

Honestly, my biggest concern on used trucks, SUVs and vehicles is RUST. I can fix many things on my own, but if the frame has intense rust... I can even rebuild the engine from oil sludge but rust on the frame is a deal beaker for me

agreed. stay away from fords owned in colder climates or at least get under there and look around. they put tons of salt on the roads where i live and i've got holes in the frame. 04 scab with the 5.4, 3v.

I currently have a 99 5.4 2v and an 05 5.4 3v and both have been excellent motors. 2v seems more torquey, 3v seems more rev happy. 3v does a little better on mileage too. I pulled a 01 Durango on a car dolly behind my 3v and averaged 14mpg. Only issues i had were exhaust manifolds on the 2v and I did plugs once on the 3v (only broke one).

2 valves were much better, less failure prone. If your not needing a big truck can't beat a ford ranger with a 2.3 excellent little trucks!

My Daughter has a 94 Ranger 2.3l with 260,000 miles and we got it form $1300 of a Meth Head.....She had it for 4 years, and only needed a Clutch, timing belt, and Radiator hoses before it finally blew a head gasket. She picked up another 94 with the 2.3l and 160,000 we swapped Transmissions and Clutch and it will go for another 200,000 without batting an eye. Love those little trucks.

Just purchased a 2010 F150 Raptor with the 5.4.. It was listed online as the 6.2 but when I showed up it was not.. I'm still happy. Shes my obtainable dream car and has 83570 miles. Was a one owner driven by a 68yo lady who traded it in for an AWD suv as shes getting older.

The best thing to do is just have a trusted mechanic go over the vehicle that you're considering purchasing. No used vehicle is perfect, and nobody usually gets rid of a vehicle for no reason.

a lot people get rid of vehicles for no reason. they buy/lease brand new, and upgrade after three years so they always have newest, most stylish, bumper to bumper warranty and even possibly free general maintenance depending on brand and dealership, people generally try to sell a vehicle before something major happens so they can get the most return on it. that having been said, never buy a used recreational vehicle period, unless it's practically free and your willing to tear it down and rebuild it, as they are always ridden like they were stolen and never serviced properly. when I was in school for O.P.E, the rule was 85% of engine failure was fuel related, 10% electrical, and 5% mechanical, and by fuel related, I mean user error, three year old gas and carburetors don't mix

no, your comment implied that everyone who was selling a used vehicle was selling it because it had something wrong with it, if you buy new and flip it after three years there isn't necessarily anything wrong with it, and at least the drive-train will still be under warranty

2001 Expedition 5.4, 272,200 miles. Minor 'ticking', but it is pretty good. 4 wheel drive in these is a beast in snow with the 4 wheel kicking in when slippery

Biggest thing I've found to keeping my '03 F-150 5.4 running problem free is switching to 5w-30 instead of 20 weight oil, and running a low restriction muffler like flowmaster to take the heat off the motor. Replace the coolant every year , making sure to use distilled water instead of tap water

The ford 5.4 is a great reliable engine!! I’m on my second one! My first one got stolen! But my second one I bought was a one owner, 06 king ranch fully loaded only with 66000 miles! Since he had full service records I had no problem paying full retail that he was asking for it! Just proper maintenance! Got a friend who has a 5.4 three valve with over 300,000 and no work has been done to it except for proper maintenance!

I checked the engine # on my 2008 5.4 3V and it was the 'improved' version. Stronger solenoids and improved spark plugs. It ticks slightly, so I upped to 5W-30. I used Royal Purple for a while, but switching to Mobile One. The upgrade to a stronger oil pump seems to go hand-in-hand with any repairs ever done to the phasers and chain guides. True, some mechanics make a living specializing in this upgrade flipping 5.4's that other mechanics priced to rebuild/swap engine. I'm at 187K right now.

I bought a high mileage used truck a few years ago. Was in a rush because of work and needed one. Happened upon a good one with some issues. But the thing that sold me was they had complete service records logged from date of purchase in 02 to 2016. Every oil change to every maintenance or issue was logged. It needed a new rear axle seal, new front steering stabilizers and the body had rust. Took it to my mechanic I've used for 20+ years and he checked it over. Even had the sparkplug fix installed. My advice is ...... Have a trusted mechanic look at it. Ask for records of repairs or maintenance. Those records say a lot and if you can get receipts it's even better. Don't settle on the first vehicle you see. Test drive in good and bad weather.

a lot of these issues you talk about are for the 5.4 3v. the major problem with the 5.4 2v is spark plug blow out. I have a 04 f250 with the 5.4 2v with 286k still running like a champ. my buddy has a 07 f150 with the 5.4 3v phasers went bad still runs like a champ.

I own a 2002 F250 5.4 that now has 290,000 miles on it and still runs like a champ. The only thing that's ever been replaced on this truck is the spark plugs, battery and brakes. Of course I keep clean oil and water. I've been using Castrol Sinthetic oil in this truck for many years. My father owned it for 13 years and since he passed I've had it for 3 years. It doesn't smoke, it doesn't burn oil, and it still fires and runs just like a new one. It runs very smooth and has no knocks or unusual sounds. It's a very strong and reliable truck. I pull trailers with mine all the time. But if the trailer is reasonably heavy or slightly overloaded I never pull in over drive. if you ask me three hundred thousand miles on a V8 engine that is still running like a champ, is proof of reliability!

Early 5.4 2v pi heads had the shit threads. Also 04 5.4s 3vs used the long plug design junk. Cam phasers are found in the 3vs. Generally they're not the best but they do last .but when it's time to replace them it sucks!!. That's the only problems that really stands out. I build these engines as they make massive power and torque with low boost. Never had much issues. Shit my dad has 289k on his 99 5.4 2v and has had 2 plugs blow out ,That's it. The best I have found is 99 03 . Never failed me. As a mechanic I love modular Ford engines. Volumetric efficiency is amazing with these motors with boost . So efficient and makes great power numbers under boost. You really get the best performance per lb of boost. Reliable and live long. Factory forged WF cranks can handle 1000hp easy . 2v heads have the lightning intakes and m112 setups for dirt cheap. You can build a 650hp 5.4 2v for 3500$ forged rods and pistons fordged oil pump gear forged timing gears. Intake and mid plate with m112 and all the parts for an average cost of 3500$. 4vs are easy take Conti heads and 4.6 cobra intake off the 03 04s and cut and widen the intake and gas weld the aluminum.make a homemade mid plate and bolt up the m122 or tvs 2.3 and your really going to see some impressive numbers with 4v heads. Flows 312's with out porting porting you can see massive flow numbers with a decent port job. 98 cobra cams are cheap and make great power with streetability still on the table. I laugh when people say the LS is cheap to build compared to a Ford LMFAO they obviously don't know shit about Ford besides what every mustang tail lights look like. Solid engines !!

Sold my 05 5.4 @310k about five years ago. Had that crusty cam phaser tick but ran great. Used motorcraft synthetic blend every 3k.

my 5.4 has had the tic for 100K miles. Local mechanic also has a F150, says his tics, too. Just says to keep the oil changed, so that's what we do.

Good tips Charles. Professional pre-purchase vehicle inspection and evaluation is so underrated and undervalued, in my humble opinion it is well worth the expense. Most Ford 5,4 L failures are directly attributable to end user lubrication mistakes such as not using the Ford recommended brand, type, grade, and viscosity, not using the Ford specified filter, not changing both at the correct interval and lack of on-time periodic maintenance. I personally own a 2002 5.4 E-250 with about 75K miles and we currently have 4 in our company fleet that all have over 250K miles, have been driven hard by the staff and we have had virtually no issues outside of failed ignition coils, however they have religiously received on-time routine periodic maintenance according to the Ford factory schedule recommendations.

Well this video was quite helpful. I'm looking at a 2008 f250 with the 5.4. Not for hauling just cause I like that bodystyle. I have known about the scary 5.4 issues and didn't know the full scope of it cause I never had a 5.4 engine. I do feel better about purchasing this truck as long as it's currently mechanically sound. I happen to have two 5.4 in my yard mine, is a 1997 f150 with 275000 miles and according to the prevous owner it has never had and engine issues and is running strong. My dad is a 2006 had has 80000 had has never had any problem as well. I think there the best engine ford has ever used.

I had a 2004 f150 5.4 Triton [1st gen]. I got it with 10k miles on it and drove it until it had 200k on it. The spark plugs can be an issue but if you replace them every 60k [not 100k] its not a big deal. Never had any other issue. I traded it in on F350 was the only reason I got rid of it. Any used vehicle can be problematic, it is all in how it was taking care of, Oil changes etc...

Don't forget there are 3 different 5.4 engines: 2valve(97-04), 3valve(04-10, as stated above) and rarer 4valve engines. Overall very reliable engines know lots of people with them and no problems. Mod engines are not as idiot proof as as a older pushrod ford but still very good engine.

Also with the 2 valve engines theres the Pi heads & non Pi heads. The newer ones with the Pi heads had more power and more threads for the plugs to prevent blow outs

MY 5.4 Has 329,000 and still running great. I did have 2 spark plug thread failures, other than that, no other problems. 98 Ford E-350

My family has had a 2002 Ford F-150 since new and the only problem I had was whenever I messed the engine up because I ran out of oil in the truck (yes I know, how dumb of me but I was a 16 y/o just learning about cars). Other than that the engine has not had any problems.

To add some supplemental info that he seemed to failed to cover here about the 5.4.. The 2v 5.4 has short threads on the sparkplugs. If you don't torque the plugs down enough they can vibrate lose and blow out of the cylinders...There is NO issue with these plugs getting stuck in the head and snapping. Sometimes the factory plugs were not torqued enough which is why some people had plugs blow out before they even had the plugs changed. The 3v 5.4 has the issue where the plugs seize into the head and then snap off inside!

I bought a used 2008 5.4 had 150,000 on it and never had the plugs changed. I had one mechanic actually turn me down to do this job. I called and ex for tech I knew. He told me to drive the truck in one night spray Kroil in each cylinder around the spark plug boot and not to touch it until morning. All the plugs came out fine. I out anti seize on the threads of the new plugs and installed them. Was a job I wS dreading that turned out to be nothing.

I have a 2000 f150 with the 5.4 and 185k miles on her. The issues I’ve had is an alternator going out, power steering pump going out, and currently experiencing brake issues which I’m working on. My family has owned the truck since she’s had 130k miles and outside of the issues, a very solid truck and engine. Just don’t beat on it too hard you’ll be fine

Oil changes on time, every time. 5.4 will sludge up if you dont change the oil enough. Timing chain tensioners are driven off oil pressure

Well, my engine is perfect, and runs great. 2008 5.4 with 159K miles on it. OIl changed every 5000 miles, full synthetic 5w-30 Mobil 1. In 48 years of driving, never had an internal mechanical failure. I think changing the oil alot, is what really makes a difference. Over the years, I think I've used up an entire dinosaur worth of oil.

5.4 2V is the engine with the least issues. Change the timing chains and tensioners + new oil pump. ( fairly cheap fix)

Wow great timing! I have a 3v 5.4L in an F250 with 285k, it is in the shop right now facing an engine replacement. I am in the process of deciding to replace it with another 5.4 or go with a different model/engine. Great info in this video, really helpful!

I own a2005 F150 with 5.4 l with 190000 miles on it with Zero problem I promise you, if you do the maintenance when you supposed to , you will not have major problems! Now I’m very fanatic about doing service, period!

My 02 F150 has the 2V 5.4 and this engine has been amazing. Of course I maintain it properly, ive owned it since new and it has never leaked or missed a beat. Ive replaced 1 coil pack in 18 years and 175,000 miles even alternator and starter are still original.

I have an 03' Expedition with 228K, and the 5.4 in it.It is a fairly solid engine from what I've found. The ignition coils he talked about are a problem I have had, along with a few of the PCV hoses dry rotting. I run it pretty hard, I tow a 6-7 thousand pound tandem axle enclosed trailer and it's happy as long as you change the oil and fluids. I've seen these engines go upwards of 350K in our work E-2 and E-350's if they are taken care of

I have a 2001 F150 with the 5.4 2 valve Triton. I pick the truck up with a hundred and twenty thousand miles and now have a hundred and fifty-six thousand miles. To avoid the issue with the spark plugs I did take it to the dealer and it cost me $380 have the spark plugs replaced. It was well worth it knowing that if I broke one off myself it would only cost more money to get it towed to the dealer. I did the ignition coils myself. I always change the oil at 4000 miles I've used my truck as a daily driver and or hunting and I do hot rodding around sometimes. Spin super reliable and I have had no issues

I was always a Chevy guy. I traded an ATV and trailer for a 99 F150 4x4 with a 5.4 Triton engine about 6 years ago. That truck has 240k miles on it. I replaced the coils and spark plugs a couple years ago when a coil went out. Other than that, I only changed the fluids when needed. That engine runs STRONG. Great truck, great engine.

i have had 2 5.4 engines..both 2 and 3 valve...overall decent and no major issues...the 3v spark plug change can be a pain but its not something that will leave you stuck on the side of the road.. do not slack on oil changes and use only the reccomended oil ..those cam phasers and overhead cam stuff need good lubrication.

I think I've been a subscriber of yours for a year plus now. I honestly dont watch your videos much and I'm not sure why. You speak clearly, are very professional, have deep in depth knowledge of what you say and disclose when you dont. I think it's the vw side may be why. I'm realizing that's a mistake. In context I'm a diesel technician on mainly fords but also dodge and Chevrolet. However I watch engineering explained a TON. lol I'd probably never say it to him but even though I generally love his videos I've never truly been great at math so alot of times I feel the wheels turning too hard and rewatch his several times to truly grasp what he is saying sometimes. I truly enjoy your videos though. The way you explain things as simply and clearly is how I try to talk to customers as well. I generally try to talk to every customer about their vehicle (provided I've worked on it) anytime I see them. I'm quite sure you addressed what you do many times in other videos about what you do now after being on the internet and out of the dealership. I believe you own your own shop? I'm in that boat about now. I have so many questions for you as someone I admire for their work ethic and amount of attention to detail . You seem like a, what would seem a minority these days imo, as an owner who genuinely cares about his customers and doing the job to the highest standards possible

There are 2 major flaws in the 5.4L 3v; weak oil pumps & 2-piece spark plugs. Both problems can be fixed; get a 1-piece spark plug and a high-pressure high-volume Melling oil pump. If you just replace the worn parts (phasers, guides, etc.) it will happen again, its like fixing the symptom but not the cause. The FordTechMakuloco has a lot of videos on the 5.4L 3v repairs. He suggests also using 5w30 Full Synthetic oil and changing it more often. The 5w20 suggested by Ford was just to meet CAFE standards, but it is not what the engine really requires. The VCT setup really requires good clean flowing oil to work properly.

I own a 2000 ford f150 with the 5.4 engine. It is 18 years old and never had a problem. It still runs like new with 134.000 miles on it. But i take good care of mine and most people don't.

I agree. I have 236k on mine, on the original motor still,. Only thing I have done is minor maintance and tried to changed the oil on time. Been one of the best trucks I've ever owned.

Thank you for this video. All companies have their flaws, but if maintenanced well, then any vehicle can last. And when issues happen then fix them and before it happens then try preventing them. That’s what I’m doing to my 2005 f-150 5.4. Thanks tho.

Have a 1999 F-250 with a 5.4L which I bought new. Ford had to replace the engine it at 23,000 miles due to manufacturing defect. Since then no issues and the truck just turned over 260,000 miles this week. Milage anywhere from 12MPG to 17MPG depending on fuel and how heavy my foot is (mileage is about 7.5 with a 28 ft camper in tow). Fluid changes on a regular schedule.

I'm a small business owner who deals in Ford trucks. I'm also a mechanic who buys and sells vehicles for a living... no different than a dealer. I always have to fix every truck I peddle. Triton 5.4L's always suffer from: seized plugs that snap off in the head phasers that don't last past 150,000kms warped exhaust manifolds on passenger side with snapped studs worn bearing hubs on drivers side heated PCV valves that crack and break off in the intake manifold weak timing chain tensioners brake fluid level indicator lights that never shut off faulty radio displays that don't illuminate drivers seats that always get torn, and lose the padding premature rust CEL's that don't illuminate Oh, and a silly door mirror can be as high as $800... and they say the imports are expensive. My advice? Domestic manufacturers can no longer compete and build decent products without a metric shit-ton of recalls and TSB's. Hence their recent brushes with bankruptcy. Avoid the 5.4L Triton 3 valve and buy a superior Toyota or Nissan.

My 2003 Ford E350 van has the 5.4L engine, and I'm so glad it's the 2 valves with standard spark plugs vs the 3 valve with cam phasers and those 2 piece spark plugs. Same with my 2003 Ford Expedition, although it's the 4.6L, they share the same "problems".

in my experience working at an engine rebuilding shop, we won't rebuild one of these 3 valve engines unless we put a cam phaser lockout kit in them. the phaser issues just seem to come back no matter what otherwise. it seems that when the phaser give issues they rattle the chains and break guide rails which the plug the oil pickup resulting in total engine failure. otherwise with proper maintenance they seem to hold up pretty well.

1997 expedition 5.4 160K , 2000 expedition 140K, 2003 Excursion 6.8 V10 (a 5.4 with 2 cylinders tacked on) religious oil changes, i switched from Motorcraft Synthetic blend at around 100K to Mobil 1 High Mileage. No engine issues with proper care.

I always bought used, but decent trucks. Mainly fords. I did buy a new truck. A 2005 Ford F-350 regular cab with a 5.4. Best truck I ever owned. I pulled landscape trailers with mowers, bobcat, so on. I had about 50,000 miles on the truck. The right exhaust manifold started leaking. That was a 1,100 dollar fix. Soon after, the left exhaust manifold started leaking. A couple coil replacements, and a coolant tube replacement. That truck kicked but. That truck plowed snow and pulled trailers for over 13 years. I still have the truck at my shop. The body gave out due to the salt we have on the roads in the winter here in western ny.

the problem I have found with a 5.4 is always related to the nut behind the wheel . except the spark plugs. I've seen those at all kinds of different mileage have prblems with plugs. Ford had one of the best v8s of the time. then they switched over to the triton motors and it went downhill.

The 5.4 3v straight from the factory was junk.... However, once you put the upgraded parts in there such as the oil pump, phasers and tensioners along with the one piece plugs you will have a rock solid engine with regular oil changes.

I’ve got a 5.4. Runs great.. 245k miles on it...it has been burning lots of oil... inconsistent though.. I always bring it in to Valvoline for my oil change, so it’s documented usually within 500 miles of the recommended next change, sometimes it’s only a quart flow, which would be normal, however other times there’s no oil on the stick, so I’m usuallyStopping in for a top off every couple weeks because I put on 200 miles a day

I have turned buying old cars into a valuable skill. From this I have learned that although there are engines that are legendary for durability ( I have a 7.3 idi diesel), and engines that have a bad rep, the reality is that modern engines are much more complicated than your father's 1978 chevy 350. They all have "Issues" at some point. When buying a used truck, pay attention to the owner, the condition of the vehicle, and ask questions. People who are trying to hide something always give themselves away. Owners who keep records and obviously loved their truck are what you want and above all else...be patient. It may take some time to find what you want.

2V is solid. The only thing people will say is they throw spark plugs, but I have never seen one come out that was properly torqued when installed. The back plugs are a little hard to get to, so they aren't torqued properly and in that case, they will work themselves out over time.

I have a 2010 F-50 with the 5.4 and had a timing chain tensioner go bad. Gaskets were all good on the tensioners. Cam followers had no wear and the phasers were good as well. I replaced everything because I want to keep the truck for a long time and travel hundreds of miles at a time. I did replace the stock oil pump with a Melling high volume pump and this is the main reason for failures on this engine is not enough oil pressure. The path of the oil starts at the pump and feeds the drivers side and then meanders eventually to the passenger side. By the time it gets to the passenger side there is not much volume or pressure left. Also the cam followers were replaced because the updated ones have smaller bleed holes and therefore restrict oil loss and pressure making for more oil to the rest of the oiling system. All the time I have had this truck, it has had oil changes every 4,000 miles and use 5-30 synthetic instead of 5-20 because I feel the 5-20 is too thin for protection.

every issue he stated was for a 3V, the 2V and 4V 5.4s see none of that. my 02 F150 5.4L has given me no issues at all

My Ford 5.4 / 6.8 2 valve experience, religious oil changes, use Mobil 1 High Mileage since 100k 1997 expedition 5.4 170k changed plugs at 100k and have only changed 2 COP, 2000 expedition 158K just did plastic intake replacement due to crossover crack runs very smooth. 2003 Excursion has only thrown 1 code at 167K for bad COP so i did all of them with plugs and runs great. If you change the oil regularly these things will run forever.

ok, first of all. i have been and still am a ford owner. i love my fords. from 93 to 2001. 4.9 L, 5.0 L , 3.8 L and 5.4 L. my expedition has 207 000 miles and it has never given me any problems. i replaced the timing chains when iy had 198k miles and the water pump, but the truck did need it yet. i plan on doing head gasket or complete overhaul on my loyal and strong 5.4 L built in ontario canada. seriously i bought it used with 130k miles on the street. 90% of the truck is still original. I found out about the oil pump issues about two years ago, so i started using the specified oil. i plan on buying another expedition, either new or used. 5.4 if not ... 5.0

Drive 04 f250 5.4 for 5 years never a engine problem but the front end is a pain!!!

Besides the early Ford Modular engines (4.6, 5.4, 6.8, etc) that did have the plug thread issues, the 5.4 are darn good engines IF you keep the oil changed. Need proof? Look at the mileage of just about any Yellow Cab Crown Victoria. Most are purchased from actions as old municipality vehicles (Police, properties appetizers, etc) around 100K miles. Some have 300K to 400K miles on them. My 1997 E350 Ford Van is kicking 300K miles as of today (October 2018) with no mechanical engine of transmission issues. I purchased it with 160K miles on it and changed the oil every 3,000 miles with the recommended weight Motocraft oil (and its cheaper than Moble 1). But with any of the Ford modular engine plan of coil packs about every 130K - do the plug change at the same time.

You should mention that extracting the spark plugs can take hours. They almost weld themselves to the block if not replaced as per the service intervals. It took some people 8h to get all 8 of 'em out. Also, if shops around the county all recommend to replace the entire engine once the underdimensioned oil passaged have gotten caked up, because just replacing the VVT unit doesn't fix anything, there is at least sufficient evidence for used car buyers to stay away if they can't look under the valve covers to inspect for oil sludge before purchasing.

My 2001 King Ranch Canadian built (fiber glass bed by the way) 239,000+ synthetic blend only has a sticky lifter (?) but still get 16+/gal freeway. I have been around Utah twice (about 1/2 dirt and washboards so lots of shifting, low gear work ) and trailered a 3,000 lb Kubota tractor for my landscaping business 4 years. It’s going on 20 years. Maintenance is important. Now retired though so selling in favor of motorhome.

Charles the 5.4 is generally a good engine. i managed a transportation company and we ran the 5.4. the only problem we had was that we had one of our vans blew a spark plug out of the hole. however the 5.4's outperformed and outlasted the chevy 5.3l engines. We had a Ford van that had 250,000 and it had very few issues whereas the 5.3 gm had would be junk by 150,000 miles. we never had issues with timing chains etc. To give you an idea of the abuse these vans we averaged about 5,000 miles a month on each of our vans, and had very little problems considering the mileage we put on them. hopefully this will help the gentleman looking at his purchasing decision.

3v 06 and I got it at 188k miles. The cam phasers were going out. Heard from a birdie at the Ford dealership to run straight 50 sae in it. And havnt had an issue with it since. Even swapped back to 5-30. Also please use 5-30 of 5-20. It makes the phasers last wayyyyy longer and thats a 700 dollar part

I’m a big Ford person. My family and I actually are. My brother in law has 3 F150’s with the 5.4l 2 valve engines. 2 have over 500k miles and the 3rd one has over 600k!!! My F250 5.4L 2 valve is currently at 344K miles so far. So no issues here!!!
