Thanks for that 1st tip. I used to "camp and snipe" on ebay, but recently I've tried bidding first and setting a max bid I refuse to go over and forgetting about the auction.

Chris, this is pure gold. Let me throw in a few additional ideas -- If you're willing to consider buying more than one comic, it's worth searching for "Amazing Spider-Man comic lot" or "Amazing Spider-Man comic bundle" or "Amazing Spider-Man comic collection" because you may find a listing that includes ASM 135 but the seller didn't type in the numbers of the issues, and instead relied on photos -- meaning that a search for "Amazing Spider-Man 135" won't reveal the listing. Ask yourself, "what are some likely misspellings for this title?" and search those misspelled terms. Here, the obvious ones would be "Amazing Spiderman" (no hyphen) and "Amazing Spider Man" (no hyphen plus a space.) Well, the eBay algorithm picks up on those and the results will (probably) be included with a search for "Amazing Spider-Man." But what about "Amzing Spider-Man" (missing an "a") or "Amazing Sipder-man" (letters in wrong order) -- whammo, you find listings that others won't see. (I know, I just searched those terms.) True, there aren't likely to be too many listings with the mangled names, but it can work if the eBay algorithm doesn't recognize the misspelling as a variation on "Amazing Spider-Man" -- I discovered this strategy when I was searching relentlessly for Weird Science reprints and accidentally typed in "Wierd Science" one day -- bingo, found some target items at great prices. If you try this strategy, check the top of the results page because you may see a prompt from eBay saying, "showing results for Weird Science. Search instead for Wierd Science" and you have to click the misspelled name to see the results you sought. Next, if you have a lot of time to devote to searching (like for example, if you're listening to a basketball game at the same time), cast a really wide net and search for something very general, like "Spider-Man comic" using the "All Categories" search, and sort the results with "Time: Newly Listed." Now comes the hard part -- search through every ding-dang page until you hit the very last page -- which is the oldest one. The reason I suggest this is, sometimes there are Buy It Now listings buried 30 or 40 or 50 pages deep in the listings, and very few people have the patience to search them all. I've found some great deals this way. Finally, if you're willing to gamble, keep in mind that it's POSSIBLE that gawdawful listings (vague description, few or no photos) were posted by sellers who don't know comics and are actually offering something very desirable. I got one great deal and one unbelievable deal on hardcover EC reprint box sets this way. But I was lucky. Happy hunting, and keep up the good work! :)

People wonder why prices are so high on ebay. Its because everyone wants something for nothing and try to talk sellers down like you just explained. Im a seller on eBay and used to sell at good prices. But so many people, rather then buying at the good price the item is listed at (or post an offer close to it), instead they're like vampires and try to suck as much out of the payment as possible outve it that they can which causes sellers to start listing their prices at much higher prices. If sellers would also try to be fair and pay fair prices when they're listed, there wouldn't be so many sellers pricing their books for so high. You have to look at it from both perspectives, not just from the perspective of the buyer. Sellers have families too and have to feed their children as well, and its hard to do that when every single person wants to get an awesome deal and eat up any tiny bit of profit you make on every single sale. I almost always (at least 80 percent of the time) am left selling books for less then I paid for them because of all the greedy cheapskates wanting a good deal. What's the point in collecting if you can't sell a collectible item for more then you paid for it?

I'm all for UK price variants. It always was interesting to me that UK price variants don't get as much love as I think they deserve.

I Could go on about this subject like the recent Chemical Engineer on the history of comic bags. First of all, the pence copies are printed at the same time as the cent copies. Some say as there is a smaller print run they are printed first, if true you would get a higher print quality, others say the pence copies are printed at the end this giving a lower print quality. I have never noticed my self. A lot of Americans an some English refuse to buy pence copies as they believe they have a lower value. On some key issues l will buy an additional cent copy if the price an condition are good. Pence copies are pretty random FF1 for the uk market is 9d, while Silver Surfer 4 is only a cent copy. In which case those comics without a pence price sold in the uk, had a horrible rubber price stamp on the white portion of the cover. (I got a high grade cent copy of SS4). There is a lot more detailed information on this subject just Google it.
