Tips For Hunting In The Rain

I’ve said this for years, and I understand you got a lot of moving parts but I can say with a lot of certainty that if you come to Oklahoma you would have some of the best hunts of your life. I hunt public and man the deer out here that you can get to is really phenomenal. Holler at me I can send you some pictures (day time). Hell I’ve already filled one of my 2 buck tags. Big nice 10 point, the first week of October.

String tracker saved me this last weekend on a doe that jumped string really bad, gut shot with a great white Simmons. String tracker worked, recovered 150 yards next morning and died on her feet without bedding which surprised me. Shot a buck the next day and string tracker failed, broke right at base of arrow, wonder if insert cut it, aluminum insert on 2117 shaft. If you are using brass inserts on carbons probably less likely to cut string? Not sure. First time using it and need to work out the kinks. You convinced me to try it and I am glad I did. Need to perfect attaching it to arrows. I may start tying it on and taping it to potentially prevent failure of string getting cut. String may have cut on rib too, not sure.

I do believe certain inserts and broadhead combos can cut the line or really make it weak right there. I wrap it a couple times around the broadhead and then tighten it into the insert. I then give it a tug to make sure its not goona break. 3 times I have had it snap instantly. I re wrap it again and its all good.

Hahaha I’ve never thought about driving far enough to just get out of the rain. Here in Oklahoma everything usually gets hit but the storms are usually on the move.

Number one tip for hunting in the rain: go somewhere not rain. Number 2: eat lunch until rain stop. Wisdom beyond words.

I won't waste my time hunting in a steady or heavy rain, deer pretty much hunker down. Drizzle or light rain is what I watch for!

sometimes no choice. If im on a 6 or 7 day out of state hunting trip and get rain for 3 or 4 days im hunting in it! Kill alot of deer that way on those trips. But at home where i have alot of time and not limited days I will sit out a heavy rain too.

Military Gortex. Great stuff. I keep a spare set of arrows in pvc tube. Installed straps and add to pack. On these rain days I hunt on ground and set up for high percentage shots 12 to 15 yards. Does have it's advantages, quit to sneak into core area's. Great Job on this.

Hi Jason, We know that laminated bows are not resistant to high temperatures. What is the maximum temperature we can go hunting in the summer with a laminated bow? How should we protect our laminated bows when hunting in hot environments? Thanks.

You would catch on fire before your bow got too hot. But in all reality the only heat issue you want to be careful of is leaving a bow I. A hot truck in the sun. Temps in a car like that can reach 150 degrees and could possibly damage the bow. I've hunted all day in 110 degree Temps in Georgia and never once worried about it.

@@SamkoTradBow Your guidance is very important to me. I want to check with you, do you mean you hunt at 110 degree in the sun and not just stand in the shade among the trees? There are no trees where I am, so I can only stand in the sun( a desert where I will go ). thank you for your help.

@matthewyu3531 in the shade of the swamps. But many western desert hunters are hunting in extreme heat and sun with no issues. I have never in 30 years as a traditional shooter heard of a bow breaking cause of heat except 2 times, both left in hot trucks in direct sun on scorching hot days. And both of those were 20 years ago. I don't think you will ever have anything to worry about as long as you don't cook it in a hot truck in direct sun for a long period of time.

Seems like everywhere I go, the thorns are out of control. Any experience with the Kuiu or First Lite with thorns?

I will not take my rain gear threw thorns. Have shreded to many sets. I dont care how tough it is it will get wrecked. Better off wearing brush buster pants and getting them soaked then changing when you get to the stand.

So you don't worry about shooting wet feathers ? I put a bit of a silicon spray on mine which seems to help some. The worse about hunting in the rain is having all your gear wet that now needs drying time !

I test my arrows wet with broadheads and build them with very high foc so that they fly great even soaked down flat. I keep all the gear that is in my pack that needs to stay dry in zip lock bags. so no worries about that pack getting wet or when it drys. all the stuff that needs to be dry is.

Try AAE Trad Vanes. They fly just like feathers off the shelf, exactly like feathers!! I have 2-3 arrows that I will keep in my Selway 6 arrow quiver that has feathers, the other half with trad vanes. Rain doesn’t stop deer from moving and it shouldn’t keep you from hunting either. A nice light, all day soft rain is super relaxing.

I'm always afraid of a mediocre shot and losing the blood trail. I've only shot 2 deer in 38 years of bow hunting in the rain and both were in the morning where tracking would be easier.

Yep its a concern but realistically blood trails fail about 3 out of 10 times for many reasons and often even in the rain the blood trail can still be easy to follow. Point being blood is not a reliable (only) method of finding animals. So I hunt like I said in the video when its raining to increase my odds of recovery.

I don’t do rain. Hate gettin all my stuff wet. If you hit a deer n don’t see it fall you’re f’d. Nope. Count me out.

Hunting in the rain is the worst part of any hunters especially when you're soaked from the top down.

Yep it can be challenging. But good rain gear makes a big difference when temps get cold. In warmer temps I just get wet and deal with it.
