Hey y'all clove oil was a life saver when i had dry socket and couldn't get to a dentist every couple days. Once i was diagnosed i got it cleaned out, kept it cleaned out and then used clove oil on gauze on it and its the only thing that touched the pain. Weird i know, but if you have a dry socket youll try anything desperately to relieve the pain. I tried this that someone told me and it worked. Now im sharing it anytime i see dry socket cause that was literally the worst.

One good tip, for anyone having to do an extraction to reduce the chances of having a dry socket. Have a deep clean done beforehand on the same day, by scaling and cleaning your mouth of tartar and plaque, it gets rid of a lot of bacteria which would otherwise affect the bloodclot, so this in essence will prep your mouth for the extraction. It will cost more, but will help to heal your extraction quicker and leave your mouth feeling fresh.

Doctors need to stop relying on conversation to instruct the patient of what to do. Important details can be easily missed or forgotten especially when the patient is already managing pain and stress when they come in. The on paper directions my oral surgeon gave me don't even allude to the need to keep a blood clot in place. Just reading through it otherwise uninformed the gauze is just for stopping the bleeding and "dry socket" is caused by smoking. The instruction sheet never even tells you what dry socket is.

Dealing with this right now. What I'm really worried about is residual food debris. The pain is manageable, and I've only been eating 'solid' food once or twice a day. Otherwise it's yogurt or low sugar smoothies. I take ibuprofen, then eat, and by the time I'm done eating and giving my teeth a quick brush, that's when I grab my monoject to irrigate the food out of the socket. That way the medicine is fully kicking in by then. My worry is that it seems like I can never get all the particles out, there's always a little bit that doesn't want to lift out and clings to the interior. It waves around and looks like if I just irrigated harder it would flush out, but I don't want to be too aggressive on such a sensitive area. The roots still have clots in the bottoms of them and I'd hate to dislodge them. There's some exposed bone between the roots and I think that's what's causing the discomfort. For clarification, it's a lower first molar and the clot never formed properly and was almost completely gone by the third day. Everytime I would eat anything there was a little less there when I went to irrigate. For irrigation and mouth rinsing, I bought a 12 pack of 12 oz bottled water and use 1 - 1 1/2 tsp of fine table salt to create a clean saline rinse solution. Like I said, the pain is manageable. I'm just concerned about the residual food particles that don't want to come out. I may try using a tiny amount of hydrogen peroxide to water. I found this video very helpful. It made me feel better to know that it will heal on it's own.

Tell that to my dentist…. They told me don’t worry just take ibuprofen the pain will go away, it’s been 3 weeks and I’m on the verge of having stomach ulcer from 3.4 grams of ibuprofen a day… the dentist said don’t touch the food and leave it in there, the meat forming from underneath will push it out over time… so what do I do? Leave it or pick it out because my dentist refuses to touch it… my throat is red, the extraction area is red and irritated, I’m half brain dead when I’m overdosing on ibuprofen….
@OnlineExodontia2 жыл бұрын
At this point if you're still having troubles, it would be worthwhile to see your provider again to explain what you're dealing with as you did here. Ibuprofen has a ceiling limit on pain relief of about 400mg/dose, so anything more than this doesn't help with pain. You'd be better alternating Ibuprofen and Tylenol as they work differently and would help to give your stomach a break. Rinsing the socket at this point will do no harm and getting the stagnant food particles out can make a significant difference. All the best!

Dry socket is up at the top of the most painful list! Putting cloves in the socket can give almost instant relief.
@profbawbag6604 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, don't do that. Cloves directly on soft tissue can cause burns. Not everyone will get burns, but most people will. That causes a vicious cycle. Dry socket is usually classed as aftercare and as such is free to treat properly without risking burns. Takes minutes for the dentist to sort. I've had 2 dry sockets, and each time was fine once the packing was inserted. First one i needed packed 3 times before it got bearable.

Im on day 7 post surgery and just went to see my dentist for a follow up. The lady told me i have to start irrigating the bottom two wisdom tooth sockets. ( i had all 4 removed but she says that gravity will keep stuff out of my top sockets) When she did, lots of stuff came out of my left socket, but then quite a bit of blood came out of my right. My mouth is a tad sore coming home and i was just wondering could she have removed my blood clot? Is bleeding normal 7 days post op?
@OnlineExodontia4 жыл бұрын
This is pretty standard and it's a good idea to follow her recommendation. If food/debris gets entrapped in the lower sockets, you can sometimes get a delayed infection that comes on 4-6 weeks after you have the teeth removed. The uppers typically don't need to be irrigated. The sites can be a bit inflamed and keep in mind they are healing so yes a bit of bleeding would be normal and is often seen when rinsing them out. The clot should be established very quickly (first 24-48 hours) so at this point in time you should not be too concerned about that. All the best...it eventually gets better!

Would it not be advisable to curette the area again (yes painful), to reform a clot?
@OnlineExodontia Жыл бұрын
Hi Salvatore - thanks for reaching out! I personally do not have experience with that approach, but my understanding is that curettage is not indicated for a dry socket. By curetting you’re further disturbing the bone and starting the healing process all over again and there is no guarantee that the second clot won’t break down and have the same issue. If you have any papers or references on curettage for dry sockets or if you could point me to some I’d be very interested to learn more! All the best!

@@OnlineExodontia My understanding is even less than yours. I am just an orthodontist. I assisted an OMFS resident during my GPR do a dry socket and I could have sworn (this is 21 years ago) that he curetted the area again. I may be mistaken. Perhaps he was just debriding the crud. I also could have sworn he brought him back every day or other day to remove the gauze strip and place another soaked strip. Then again, too long ago to remember. I don’t know how I got to your video, but I think i was just surfing until something interesting popped up. When packing, do you use just Eugenol or eugenol with iodophor? And do you have to repack frequently? I didn’t realize that (and I may be misunderstanding it) the healing occurs from the gingival margins of the wound invaginating down into the socket until they meet (as opposed to the margins meeting over the blood clot. If I have understood correctly, that invagination would leave quite a defect, no? Would it rectify itself somewhat over time? Or would the bony walls resorb inferiorly (in the mandible) till it meets the new “floor”, thus greatly increasing the speed of vertical bone loss seen in edentulous areas? I find it very interesting. If you have any Ortho questions, would be happy to help. Maybe I should start a channel !

Hello, I got my wisdom teeth removed on October 20th, on the 22nd I went back to to dentist because I fear that I had dry socket. They irrigated the extraction points and said they are healing nicely and I didn’t have dry socket. However, it is now the 26th and for today and the past two days I have had a constant dull pain in my lower left extraction point and when I look at it in the mirror I see what I believe to be bone. There is also an indent on my cheek in that area that I’m not sure what it is. I feel as though I do have a case of dry socket. I do take a contraceptive pill that I’ve read causes weak or no blood clots to form as you mentioned. What are your thoughts on how I should go about the rest of my recovery. I’ve been taking acetaminophen and ibuprofen interchangeably but so often that it’s not working as long anymore and have been doing numerous salt water rinses. Thank you and I hope you see this!
@OnlineExodontia3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mackenzie - sorry to hear that you're having troubles with your extraction site. It's tough to diagnose without seeing you, however it does sound like something is not quite right. Dry socket for most is very intense. Typically Tylenol and Ibuprofen don't even touch it. You mentioned it's helping, but working less than it was. If you find the pain is increasing and you're not able to taper off of your pills, then there is a chance you could have a dry socket. By 6 days post-op your pain should be decreasing significantly. The indent in your cheek is likely where the incision was made, but that's just a guess. If you are concerned, there is no harm contacting your dentist / surgeon again to see what they say. I realize this doesn't solve the problem, but hopefully it helps. All the best and thanks for watching!

Now question: You said the dry socket could heal on its own and you wouldn’t have to get it treated, right? (Because personally I don’t like the pain that comes with treating it compared to the minor pain I have with the dry socket itself) now what about the food debris within the socket? If the wound closes will the food just be stuck in the gums? Would love to hear your feedback. Thank you!
@OnlineExodontia Жыл бұрын
You are correct that dry socket will heal on it's own. The pain is generally intense for people, so much so that Advil or Tylenol do not work and the packing is needed to help relieve their symptoms. Food is generally not an issue in a regular extraction site. All the best!

@OnlineExodontia3 жыл бұрын
This doesn't sound like dry socket. Sometimes, adjacent tooth roots become more exposed when a tooth is removed and nerve endings that are exposed on the root surface can lead to significant sensitivity. Over time this will resolve. This is just a guess based on what you've described. All the best!

I'm noticing in one of the gums, the top has bone sticking out from the top if run my tongue over it. Is it a left over root or bone fragment? It seems kinda deep but does wiggle a bit. The blood clot seems to still be there. I had 5 teeth pulled over the period of 2 days, last week. Also noticed on two of the gums on the outside/front there's "blisters" or mouth ulcers. Especially in the farmost left front extraction. It almost looks like a chemical burn. What helps is 500mg Tylenol x2 + a single 400mg Advil every four hours and clindamican every 6 hours. Whenever I rinse with salt water, it stings.
@OnlineExodontia3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a difficult time! You'll pull through eventually so hang in there. It's hard to say for sure what you're feeling, but certainly when upper molars, or multiple upper teeth are removed at once, you will have sharp bone that is now able to be felt with the tongue since the teeth are gone. This typically heals over nicely without complications. Best to see your provider if you have concerns as it's hard for me to diagnose on here. All the best!

Hello!! I’m supposed to be getting my wisdom teeth removed but I’m scared that I’ll be nauseous from the medicine & throw up causing my blood clots to not form or be dislodged. If you got sick the day of surgery, how would you clean your mouth to prevent infection if you can’t rinse the first 24hrs?
@OnlineExodontia2 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome to rinse, just don’t be forcefully spitting or swishing vigorously. A bit of water or dilute salt water and just tip your head from side to side. Then lean over the sink and allow it to run out.

I started bleeding a lot on the 6th day after extraction on my right bottom hole. I placed gauze all day and night until the bleeding stopped. Is this something normal? & once it stops bleeding what can I do to clean the hole?
@OnlineExodontia2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't clean in the hole, just tidy up gently around it if need be with a soft toothbrush or a damp gauze. This isn't uncommon, but it's also not the norm if that makes sense for bleeding to occur this long after. If you're taking anti-coagulant medications it is more likely. Regardless, it's generally of little concern as long as you don't develop any pain or swelling and things continue to feel better and heal in the area. All the best!

I’m worried I have a dry socket on my right bottom jaw! I wouldn’t say it’s painful -considering I’m scared of teeth work- it’s not painful at all it’s just a light pressure as if I’m poking that area from the outside, my point is the pressure is very minimal while the left I no longer feel anything, (both bottoms removed) if I take ibuprofen will the socket (if it is) heal itself or will I still need to go to the dentist office?

My dentist removed my wisdom tooth two days ago, and the pain has not stopped, it's worse when I lay down so I cant sleep and the pain is radiating to my ear, also my bottom lip has a tingling sensation, the same sensation you get when the numbing agent is wearing off :( this has been the worst 2 weeks of my life
@OnlineExodontia4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that Linixion...If you have concerns it is best to see your dentist. However if you're only two days post-op it can be normal to have significant pain. The tingling in your lip is likely from some trauma to the nerve that passes by the lower wisdom tooth. This is something that is not uncommon depending on the location of the tooth. The good news is that generally when it is tingling like that there is a good chance that it will eventually recover and be back to normal. It's more concerning when you have no sensation at all. Nerves are very slow to heal so this can sometimes take weeks to many months to get better. All the best to you in your recovery.

I had my tooth pulled three days later lots of throbbing. Went in to see the dentist six days after the pull. He did what u said. Cleaned it put that stinky stuff on a guaze. Told me to change the guaze 30 min later. I did and that stinky stuff came out with it. Called the dentist he said it's ok. The pain isnt as bad. But im scared to eat. Gonna eat soup for two days. I do smoke but only 4 cigarette a day. How long should i wait to smoke. I'm for sure trying to wait two days. Worried about food getting in there. Im so worried he didnt say come back. Just said to wash with chlorhexidine but to only move my head back and forth. Just need a bit more advice on eating and was it ok that the packing stuff came out?
@OnlineExodontia4 жыл бұрын
Ideally, the packing should remain in place for more than 30 minutes. It should be noted however that any packing that's placed is actually a foreign body that will act to delay healing somewhat. The trade-off many times is that it feels better. So, if the packing is out, but your pain is manageable I would recommend leaving it that way. At 6-7 days post-extraction we often have people rinsing with a small plastic syringe (Monoject syringe) to keep the sockets clear of debris. Gently tilting your head would be good for the first 24 hours, but at this point, more aggressive rinsing won't do any harm. As for smoking, the number of cigarettes or how often you smoke really won't make a difference. The fact that you have a history of smoking and presently smoke means that your tissues likely have less blood flow to them and therefore may not repair as well or as quickly. Hopefully that helps. Also, even though your dentist didn't instruct you to return, you should always be able to reach out to them if you're having concerns. All the best!
