I would suggest that for getting your first horse check out the local rescue organizations. They want their adoptions to work, so they will be honest with you about any issues a horse has. All I ever wanted was a good pleasure horse that would give me a good riding experience. I wasn't into showing, jumping, or any of that stuff. I bought the horse I learned to ride on when she was for sale. She probable wasn't the best horse for me because we were both green. There's a saying that green on green makes black and blue, and she gave me plenty of flying lessons over our time together. But I had a bond with her. She gave me a beautiful colt that she got to keep by her side, and she is buried on our property in the spot where she died at the age of 27. Her son is buried beside her. That is an important thing to remember. Horses are living beings who may not be as smart as we are, but thry have feelings. They aren't like a car that you trade in when you want a better model. They are a significant responsibility. If and when you can no longer keep s horse, please surrender them to a rescue organization rather than selling them at auction.

I stopped riding when I was 13. I used to train pony’s and worked a lot around the track. My family went broke due to our business burning down. We sold all 23 horses we had at the time. I moved away and got a career. I’m 25 now and I can afford an acreage with horses. Im so excited to make this big step. I don’t have much friends who are horse lovers so Im commenting on here! Lol Hopefully my dad back home has all our old gear still. That will save a ton of cash. Thanks for the video!

I have more than 60 years of horse experience, much of it as a professional, and I still take another experienced horseman along when I buy a new horse because they might see something I missed. Especially if I take a strong liking to a specific horse the moment I lay eyes on him. I might still choose to buy the horse but at least I have two people's eyes on him first so little if anything will be missed.

Thank you! This video helped me out a little bit. We just got our first horse and she’s a sweetheart. She won’t let me clean her feet though and needs her hooves clipped bad. We scheduled an appointment for a farrier to come out to clean and clip them, but he had a very hard time and is having to come back with a helper to get it done. He gave her 2 sedatives and she still was trying hard to kick him and got him once on his hand. He agrees that she’s a sweetheart but says she has bad manners and probably had a bad experience with her hooves in the past. He said her feet are in good shape for how bad her hooves need to be trimmed but said by the look of it, the last person who trimmed them did a terrible job Update: the farrier told my fiancé’s boss, who’s the one that recommended him, that our horse is (excuse my language) but a bitch and will actually not be back even though he told me he would be. So we’re back to square one and have to find another farrier who has experience working with difficult horses. I completely understand this guys hard time he had and not wanting to come back due to it, especially since he did get kicked once on his hand, but it would of been nice for him to tell me the truth or call us later to tell us he couldn’t do it. But to find out through my fiancé’s boss... I just feel bad for our girl since I’m sure her feet hurt and or is uncomfortable to walk
@lindaweybright24803 жыл бұрын
Maybe you could search for a video to show how to train a horse for hoof trimming. Pet her all over, and reward often with treats: carrots or apple pieces work well; or if she is hungry use handsful of hay. Take it slow and gentle. I like to wear a helmet just in case.

@@DustyHoney we ended up having to sell her to someone who’s more experienced with horses. We do keep in touch with her though and the lady said she’s doing great. She has other horses to run around with now and will let that lady clean her hooves. They just can’t get her to walk on her own and still only allows you to sit on her back and have someone else lead her around. She definitely agrees that she’s a stubborn horse, but she has been through a lot unfortunately

I’ve said it before and I’m saying it again: Animals are not presents! The primary care taker needs to be present the day of the purchase and needs to make sure they have all the supplies and have done proper research. It would also help to have at least 2 years of riding experience.

You would need to pay for a farrier about every 4-5 weeks, vet at least 2x per year about $500 minimum, and board would depend on where you boarded and what you were looking for plan on at least a couple hundred a month.

When I got a horse I didn’t plan on the people being so mean, not all but a large portion of them told me I sucked and after 20 sum years of riding still told me I didn’t know what I was doing. And be careful of the trainers and people you board with, I had found out my horses were being taken to shows without my consent. I thought horse people would be down to earth and fun and help each other.

This one in particular; she has never been trained; doesn’t like to be washed; I know first thing to do is to do ground work with her but there’s mostly sunlight and I can’t stand in the heat very long; plus she loves to eat. She’s probably about 15 years old. Just to need to know how I can work with her. Thanks in advance 😊
