I have one of those Craftsman TV sets that has a vertical problem. One day I'll restore it. The ion trap magnets can also become weak over the decades. Hard to diagnose that problem.

Parted out an RCA chassis today...looks like I got most of it right. Didn't grab the adjustable coils though so I'll cut them out before I put the chassis out for "bulk trash day". Did grab the 10 lb power transformer though. Even if I never use it, getting it out of the chassis significantly increases the chance municipal waste in my township will actually lift it off the curb!

Bet you could ebay most of your power transformers to homebrewers. It isn't just audionuts, it's hams, and various things can be done with secondaries to get transmitter output voltages.

Always interesting to look in on Did not realize that rectangular tubes cam out that early. What strikes me is the thick glass on the front. As you probably know, European TV sets, the front of the tube was frequently extended slightly forward outside the front of the cabinet. American sets on the other hand, the picture tubes were always recessed behind the facia. I've always wondered why the difference.

Safety glass is bonded to the crt on those European sets. It was in the US too but not this early. I think that became common sometime in the 60s or 70s

Really nice change of pace Bob! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this subject. Your thought process is applicable to all vintage gear, and as usual, I learned some things. Parting out equipment is an inevitable, sometimes "depressing" part of the work. It's satisfying to align with your judgement on the subject. Looking forward to the next video. - JRH

Hoffman are quite similar to RCA and Admiral. I have a couple I'll get to someday.

Other than some of the expensive tubes like the 5U4 you mentioned, do you use pulled tubes before you get NOS?
@bandersentv
@bandersentv Ай бұрын
I generally use NOS for customers and used for myself.

You can buy a voice of reason regarding power transformer hoarding - an insulation tester :) Will you ever use something that has unreliable mains insulation in a project or repair really? Probably not.
@bandersentv

Are you suggesting these transformers have unreliable insulation? Never had a problem with them or heard of any reason for concerns.
