Batiks are my favorite fabric to make a quilt! I didn't wash precuts because of the size, and had a disaster when one of the colors ran after the quilt was complete! From now on I will find a way to wash those 5" squares or 2.5" strips. The manufacturer of Island Batiks actually suggested to me, to use Synthrapol or Retayne when washing their precuts. Thanks for this great video!

Batiks on the bolt is sold right side out...ask the quilt shop to put a small piece of masking tape on the edge of the good side....fat quarters are folded right/good side out as well...when you unpack at home, mark good side with a small piece of masking tape as well..

Great tip, unfortunately I prewash so any markers would be taken off. But for folks that don't prewash, that's a great idea.

I take some small safety pins and have them pin them on the correct side. My eyes aren’t that great now and this helps.

So do Batiks not fray at all? I am new to quilting and I wanted to start with a rag quilt (alternating with denim squares) since it seems pretty easy to do and I love the designs and colors in the batik fabrics. (I originally wanted to do paisley but it's difficult to find the old traditional bandana style paisley fabric anymore....all I'm finding is paisley fabric that has a lot of squares in the design that I don't like and I don't even know if the paisley fabric would have worked anyway since it seems like it's a heavier / stiffer fabric as well). Anyway, can anyone tell me if batiks will or will not work for a rag quilt with frayed edges? Has anyone tried? TY

As for wrinkles, I iron my surface first, to warm it, lay the batik fabric down, and spray with a light mist of water. Let it set a few seconds, finger press a little on the wrinkles, and then press with the iron. Works like a charm.

Color catchers work well. I’ve never had any problems and I primarily use batik fabrics. The depth of color that you get with batiks over traditionally printed quilters cotton is hard to match. Thanks for a great video.

Do you have a video on needle turn batiks? I’ve tried a few methods and it’s hard to get the needle through-impossible if glue is involved. I ordered some new applique needles and going to try pre-wash, no starch to make the fabric softer.

I don’t have any video like that. I don’t do needle turn but love the look of it!

I prewash all my fabrics and buy only yardage. Don't think I would want to hand wash pre-cuts before quilting. Thank you

I never pre wash but once quilt is done I wash on cold with two color catchers. I’ve never had a quilt bleed with this method.

Half a dozen good quality colour catchers in the first few (cool) washes should take care of any colour bleeding. Avoid washing products with whiteners!

Isn’t it so fabric comes off the bolt with the printed side outside. So check the fold, wrong side would be the side behind the fold. Ta daaaaa

Hi Wanda, I never prewash and make 30 to 50 quilts each year for last 45 years. I wash all of them before I give them away and have not had problems doing that even with batiks. I typically wash 4 or 5 new quilts together without other clothes. I would not dry clean a quilt. Those chemicals are not good for it. Enjoy that new quilt.

I absolutely love Batiks but for me, hand quilting is not possible with them. Other than that, I can’t think of any reason not to use Batiks for their beauty, little to no fraying and ease in piecing.

I am making a quilt for my daughter. I did not prewash!!!!!!! My colors are black , Browns yellow and golds. Do I tell her to have it dry cleaned instead of washing. Also I did applicayed , but transferred it on material then blanket stitched, . Items were drums, giraffes, and elephants. It’s too late now to try and wash . Oh my all this work. Help!!!!!

Sounds like a lovely quilt! I'm not an expert on fabric bleeding, but if you have fabrics left over, maybe you could test them to see if they bleed. They may not. There are color catchers for laundry out there that may help. Also, washing in cold might help avoid it. I don't know what you mean by transferred on to the material so I can't speak to that. Also, I've never dry cleaned a quilt, so I wouldn't be able to advise you on that.

Just wash by itself. A little less detergent and some plain white fabric scrap to see if any problem for other clothes for next time. Most fabric is no problem. Problems are rare. I have made 30 to 50 quilts a year for decades and I do not prewash. Hot pink and red are less trustworthy but only once each in all these quilts.

There are a couple of brands of color grabbers. They are the size of a dryer sheet and you put them (two if the fabric is very dark) into the wash. They will soak up a lot of the dye that bleeds. I would also recommend washing in cold water. For future projects you might try pre-soaking the fabric in "Retayne". It's a color fixative recommended for batiks and I've had good success using it. Best wishes 😊

Hello all. I don't claim to be any sort of expert on ANYTHING, so forgive me if I speak out of turn; but I really felt for Wanda who was concerned that her quilt may not stand up to the rigours of washing. Firstly, may I point out that the process for making batiks requires the wax resist to be removed from the fabric as the layers of colour are added and this is usually done by washing in hot water and detergent, so the batiks we buy for quilting should be well able to withstand ordinary domestic warm, (I wouldn't use hot) washes. Here in the UK, we have a company called Dripak who specialise in selling natural cleaning products. I had a bit of a crisis of confidence over washing a quilt I made years ago and contacted Dripak to ask for advice. The story of my quilt washing experience became a blog on their website. This is the link to that blog: www.dri-pak.co.uk/cleaning-a-patchwork-quilt/ But really, I wanted to say to Wanda that she should not lose sleep over her quilt. I'm sure it will be loved and the chances are good that it will survive a gentle cold or cool wash at any time. I wouldn't want to dry clean one of mine. I hope this is helpful. Best wishes, Caralyn

thank you for this video. just a little bit of constructive criticism... in this video "uhm" and "uh" were said so many times, sometimes after every other word. (it actually kinda drove me crazy...) but i did appreciate this video other wise.

As to your on repeated use of uhm and uh, my thoughts. Publicly posted constructive criticism remarks are simply rude, and not helpful. Just be yourself, and anyone with problems can just turn the channel. Evidently it doesn’t take much to drive this person crazy, her issue not yours.
