You made one mistake Justin. You don't need the transmission in neutral to spin the torque convertor to get the bolts loose. the convertor spins free even in park, it's a fluid clutch and always spins with the engine no matter what gear the trans is in. Park only locks the output shaft from turning.

@@3BBgarage You should start early teaching those boys to wear safety glasses while under the cars, it only takes 1 piece of dirt or rust to damage their eyes. Remember it's a car channel and safety should be a first lesson. Glad you got the heat-pump working, you should pick up a few spare parts now that you know who has them before it goes obsolete. My furnace is a 77 and parts are already hard to find. if cheap enough I would keep 4 items around, #1) Cappacitor #2) blower unit #3) fan unit #4) emergency heater element. When you finally build the new house you can always move the heat-pump out to the garage.

About 20 years ago my son was helping me swap out a T-5 on my Mustang GT. We were slipping it out and he got a little ahead and pulled the trans out with my hand on the bottom and it fell with my hand sandwiched between the trans and asphalt! I taught him some new words that day! I didn't get mad at him I just told him to watch what was going on.

Justin nice video. I will agree with the other comments about needing to be in neutral to turn the flywheel. But other then that great info. I pull those transmissions all the time. A couple comments if others haven't said it. That transfer case drain plug looking like that is normal. The first few we did we went into them and found nothing wrong. Second is the starter. Not a bad decision to change it. Is it necessary, probably not. But still a good idea. The last thing I do on those and the six speeds. Because they use the same transfer case is I leave the gasket off. I don't know why GM put it there. It does nothing. Except making changing it a pain. But I do those on a lift. Props for doing it on the ground.

Looking like awesome progress on the transmission!!! I’m wondering if there’s fluid in the new converter???? From what I’ve seen they usually put some fluid in it before installing it???!!! Good luck and have fun putting it back together you made it look easy and I know it’s not that easy to do but it’s definitely looking good so far!!! See you tomorrow have a great night!!!!

@@3BBgarage Transmission and transfer case usually have separate oil systems so drain both to reduce weight and don't forget to fill both when done. Pulling a bad unit is one thing but always put the new one in with the torque convertor installed all the way into the new transmission. improperly seated torque convertor can destroy a new transmission pump on first crank. Install it and keep spinning until it drops all the way in 3 sometimes 4 drops before it's fully seated into the pump ring gear, if not first crank can crack the pump gear in 2. Also if there is any metal in the trans fluid replace the convertor too unless you can find a trans shop with a flushing machine for torque convertors, it holds average 2 gallons of fluid and that adds up to a lot of metal if not replaced or flushed. Also put a little anti-seize on those exhaust bolts when reinstalling.

do the rear main on the engine while you have the trans out. 150-170k they tend to start leaking.

It's rare to find someone who actually does it but, get 4 wheel chocks if you ever use ramps for working under a car. Chock in front and behind the wheels. My ex-brother in law was one of those rare occasions. He crawled under his 69 Chevelle to replace the trans and pulled the drive shaft and the car rolled off the ramps and onto his chest and put him in the hospital for a few days with a broken rib, one of many dumb stunts he did over the years. He said the car was in park. But when he dropped the shaft the trans wasn't connected to the wheels and it rolled. I also had a kid about 1 mile from my house putting coil springs in the rear of his car. He had a bumper jack on top of his spare tire to raise the car high enough. When he didn't come to dinner his mother sent someone to get him and found him hanging over the rear tire decapitated because the jack fell off the spare tire. They said he had been like that for about 3 hrs in a shopping center parking lot and nobody checked on him the whole time. That was about 40 yrs ago. So teach your boys safety if you want them working on cars. And buy the youngest his own creeper so you have yours when you need it, he really seems to enjoy it out on the driveway. Reminds me of being a kid with wooden go-carts with lawnmower wheels.

I see you have the Mobil 1 HP BLACK LABEL fluid, but isn't recommended fluid for 8L90 the HP BLUE LABEL?
@scottmalone1106
@scottmalone1106 8 ай бұрын
100% correct. The correct fluid is the Mobil 1 Blue Label, not the black label. The black label fluid holds tons of moisture which is what causes the torque converter shudder in the first place. If the shudder goes unchecked a long time the lining of the TC will come apart and dump tons of debris in the transmission which destroys it. The Mobil1 Full Synthetic LV ATF HP (Blue Label) is a game changer for the 8L90 transmissions!

Newer vehicles are hard to work on cause of computers and electronic devices in them. A mechanic had issues finding the source why a 2020 Dodge ??? Would not even start. Our computer that we use to test and tune shows everything is good. Nope some cheap part kept telling the computer that does something not to start. I told Jackie Bosslady and 2 Mechanic's why u think I like older vehicles better. When I was driving a friend's SUV a dam alarm was going off. The faster I go the louder it gets. I called her and said why the hell is causing this dam alarm go off. She was like u got ur seatbelt on I said yeah. Then she goes anything on the passenger seat and I said yeah a case of Dr Pepper and a Walmart bag of stuff. She was snickering and then laugh's. I was like what's so funny and she goes there's sensors and if weight is detected and the seat belt is not fasten the alarm goes off. I pulled over and out the seatbelt over the cases of Dr Pepper. Jessie was like why no buzzer in her Suburban 😁😁😁 I removed the alarm buzzer.

Ask any mechanic who deals with the GM trannies - once they get past 100K miles - cross your fingers. Maintenance of course helps but isn't a guarantee. Driving conditions (highway, traffic, stop & go, around town, etc) also plays a role. AFM/DoD/whatever they want to call it where cylinders are shut down also plays in on the vehicles which have it (at least on GM's). The 4l60's had heat issues, the 6l80's aren't much better, the 8 speeds were garbage from the factory, and the jury is still out on the 10 speeds. Chrysler/Dodge/Ram/Fiat aren't free of their transmission issues either.
