That's a good way to do it. Working for a firm teaches you the "business" aspect of law that you don't learn in law school.

Good advice but the volume is way too low; I had to crank up the volume and put on close captioning. Thanks for putting this together! I'm a solo in North Carolina.

Would you consider Jimmy McGill's "office" from Better Call Saul Season 1 an office? lol

All Good advice. You forgot to mention the suit! I want to know how to dress. How many to buy. What is more appropriate in different situations. You mentioned networking which is a good way to get your foot in the door.

Good question! I wear a coat and tie 99% of the time. But a lot of attorneys don't. Some wear business casual clothing unless they're going to court. Most attorneys wear a dark grey or blue suit when they appear before a judge...even if it's 100 degrees outside. I'd suggest wearing a suit or coat and tie everyday. It will command some respect and, if you're younger, you won't get mistaken for an intern. When you dress like a slob, you work like a slob.

@@justinmccarthy4247 Do you watch, "Suits?" I know that's more of the big business type of environment. Harvey seems to think it's an extremely big deal. But in a show like, "Better call Saul" he dresses like Matlock to attract an older generation of clients. Do you work in more of a city? I'm not a lawyer but I was thinking of moving to a different field of work and perhaps applying. I have never owned a suit in my life and it's not the type of environment I am use to. I have looked up costs to buy them and styles but I am confused by the care of them. You wear the same pants and coat 3-4 times a week and only wash them twice a year? But you buy several shirts? How many suits do you buy and wear?

@@justinmccarthy4247 Also, does the type of vehicle and color you drive around in matter a great deal? I have a new Black Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. When I was younger I didn't have a great deal of money and a crappy vehicle. My Aunt asked me to drop her off at very fancy party where she dressed up and there were limos and everyone had extremely nice vehicles. lol, I dropped her off down the corner so she wouldn't be embarrassed. But lawyers I would think need to present themselves in a nice vehicle.

@@guberization You need just a few suits to start...especially if you're going to court. I've never seen Suits. But I'll check it out sometime.

To start have two or three suits, one navy blazer, one sport coat, and a couple pairs of khakis. Honestly, best thing to do if your starting out is go to a place like Joseph A. Bank, or a mail-order service like Charles Thyrwitt. For a few hundred bucks you can buy out the store. If you are not a person who fits into boxy off the rack suits, you can try a service like Indochino which does made to measure online.
