I dig most of your tips. However, one tip is a non-no. Never unpack your luggage on a bed, including the other twin bed in which you're not sleeping. Reason: IF there are bed bugs anywhere on either bed, they'll be traveling with you back home. Alternative: Unpack in the bathroom, where bed bugs are least likely to be hiding and crawling around (they prefer wood and soft surfaces rather than tile and porcelain).

@@mouath_14 Movies and TV shows are shown in original version in Holland, while in France and Germany, they are dubbed. Therefore, Dutch are more used to the language at full speed. Once Germans have had a chance to practice in the real environment, there's no stopping them -- the only way you can tell they're German is that they use correct English grammar, whereas most native speakers don't.

@@nathanlaoshi8074 Absolutely true! It's also a choice to watch a movie with the original audio or even use English subtitles to learn faster, that's how i became fluent in English even though it's my third language. Besides, i find it super cringy to watch a movie dubbed in my native language.

My biggest tip for lone travellers: Stay at hostels or go couch surfing. Never stay alone in a hotel - that will just make you depressed. Meeting other people is the one thing that will truly make travelling alone enjoyable. Living in a hostel for a week is the best way to make new friends. (Especially if they organize some common activity, like daily surf lessons that naturally make you bond with the group) Couch surfing is probably the best way to genuinely experience a foreign culture, cause you're actually living with a native in their own home.

You can have some amazingly cheap vacations if you travel alone and have a flexible schedule. If you're able to grab a last minute flight on an odd date (like a weekday in October) you can save like 90% on airplane tickets and you'll almost be guaranteed to get a cheap hotel room. Or you could always try couch surfing, which is so much easier when you are alone.

More tips: Go the movies. When you dine at a restaurant, sit at the bar. Go to a festival -- while researching your destinations, check to see which cities in the countries you wish to travel to have festivals happening. Montreal, for example, has lots of festivals all year 'round, but last year I specifically chose mid-July to catch the Just for Laughs Festival. If you smile and laugh, you will not be alone long. In New York City, I go to comedy clubs. Go shopping (read: browse), especially in department stores, and be sure to try on clothes in different sizes. That will give you the chance to converse with a salesperson on topics such as the sizes in his or her country. You would be surprised what a question such as "Give it to me straight; this [insert type of garment] is too tight on me, right?"

I have a couple of things to add: first, stay at youth hostels, in that they're far cheaper than most hotels, and they take in people like yourself who are traveling alone--from all over the world; #2 is to keep a log of your trip, and make it as detailed as possible--I'm talking to the point of ridiculous. You'll appreciate it in years to come, and it's a good way to share the details of the trip.

I've just arrived in mallorca on my own in March and it's dead around here, but normally in summer it's full of British people like me and it's really lively but today's been weird, I felt amazing heading here as I've never done anything like this alone and I felt really independent, but when I arrived I was like... What now? Haha I just went to a local aldi and purchased some beer and food, to be honest I felt incredibly awkward in there though because I'm a white as snow brit in a town full of tanned Spanish people, but after drinking a bit of alcohol I'm starting to relax a bit, that might sound like an unhealthy idea but it's really easing my anxiety
@RiderInHell6 жыл бұрын
Sir Wright hey, that's perfectly normal. Practice makes perfect. I've never travelled alone myself but I'm planning to next year. I'm a bit nervous but excited. I'm probably be like you describe yourself, in the beginning. But then I guess it's really a matter of exploring your surroundings. Don't worry if you don't get to see everything. You'll never see everything. There will always be something else to see. What you CAN do is to be in the moment and just enjoy youself. I mean, it's a vacation, a trip where you have a chance to kind of detatch yourself from reality. Because in the blink of an eye you'll be home again with your everyday routine. So, just enjoy it! 😉

Fábio Albuquerque ah nice advice there, I'm back home now and glad I done it... Kinda. I simply went in the wrong time of year, I was there 5 days. my first two days felt like a mistake, but then I mingled with a large group of brits who live over there. on my 3rd day I went to the city Palma in Mallorca and it was beautiful, that night I couldn't find anyone like them so by day 4 I just explored the town and I wasn't bothered about making new friends anymore, plus next time if I go alone or with friends I know where to go during summer when it's busy. That night out when I met those people was the best part, so if I was you, do some research and make sure you go a good time of year, for example next time I go Mallorca, I'll go at the start of June when magaluf is busy and full of life. It's not all fun and games however, you will feel lonely on your own, but like I said it was like an episode of The Walking Dead that time of year and I didn't feel so isolated in Palma cos it was busy and full of other solo tourists so I didn't feel weird. You'll have this compulsion to go out and talk to people like you would try and meet a girl or something and in the end it REALLY makes you appreciate the friends you have at home, but now even just hanging around with people makes me really happy where before that wasn't enough for me. So if it's your first time alone, go somewhere busy because you will get lonely but if its busy it'll be easier to meet people, it also increases your confidence and you feel more in control of your own destiny and my anxiety is near enough gone and I feel A LOT more comfortable around strangers since they were the only people I ever met while on my own, so you should definitely do it, just make sure you go somewhere that is full of tourists and not locals because you will feel like an alien or something, plus strange looks never help 8| haha good luck :) where are you thinking of going?
@RiderInHell6 жыл бұрын
Sir Wright I'd say you're half right there. I mean, we're all people. I don't mind meeting the locals. In fact, I want to meet them. If it was to be with "my own people" I'd stay home or I wouldn't go alone. :) Also, I don't mind visiting more isolated places. I haven't done much reserach for the Philippines yet, but in Japan I've already checked some awesome places. They're outside of the main cities, of course. Though, I think in the end it'll depend on the person and what is the goal of their journey. If we'd all like red it'd be pretty boring... :p
@NewOrderOfAlexandria6 жыл бұрын
Fábio Albuquerque I suppose you're right haha I did get used to them in the end, by day three the staff were pretty familiar with me and were friendly so I got used to it and Spanish women are pretty too. If you go somewhere more touristy though Locals are a very kind and friendly as they're used to them and know it's a popular place, in Palma they were a lot more friendly than in magaluf but I think that's because in magaluf you get a lot of loud mouth, young brits who think they're tough guys in the clubs starting fights in summer, etc and even I hate guys like that over here too so it's understandable why they're not too friendly but the hotel staff became nicer to me as they realised I wasn't like that, when I was really lonely though I just really wanted to talk to another British person you see haha, I had never even had a flat to myself before going out there alone so it was really scary for me, I think next time I'll be able to handle things a lot better lol you've got to think of the language barrier as well not everyone over there spoke English so there were times where they'd just look at you funny and speak in Spanish which I am not very familiar with. But yh, I get you, it is interesting to see different cultures, I like it for that reason and I think because I've been Mallorca a couple of times before that whole aspect of seeing different cultures has worn off on me a bit lol
@RiderInHell6 жыл бұрын
Well, I've never been to Spain but spanish people are famous for being lazy to try to understand other languages (not all, of course... younger people are probably not that way, nowadays). Well, if you like Spain and a crowded place, you should come to Portugal sometime. I'm from Lisbon and there are tourists here all year round. Mainly in the summer, but any time you come you'll definitely not be alone. And if you are, just talk to some people. Specially girls. :) Most tourists are very nice (how could they not be, being on vacation on such a beautiful and lively country?) and portuguese people are generally very nice, too, anywhere you go. Although I'm probably older than you (28) I haven't had yet the experience of have my own home. But if all goes well and I get a remote job next year with a good pay I'll be able to finally find my own place or even travel around while I can. But no matter, though we still have to have our responsibilities and develop our lives we are young and we much enjoy live as much as we can while we still can. :)

That is, in fact, not at all true. I am currently 17 years of age and have little issues to travel alone. Many hostels are made especially for the youth and if nothings works - a simple writing from my parents is sufficient to get a room booked. Anyways, I do think that 10 is a little young for traveling alone and I don't think there's many 10-year olds that actually get to travel alone. You could try to go to some kind of summer camp or guided vacation made just for kids your age.

I don't see the need to try and meet people when your traveling, its not like their gonna become your buddy and follow you around. It would be nice to meet a beautiful woman that will fall in love with you but this is reality not fantasy!!!!!!!!!
