TIPS | Giving & Organizing HAND-ME-DOWNS

TIPS
1. Dump into one pile on the floor.
2. Choose destinations and create piles (ie charity, friend’s kids, etc).
3. Toss clothes that are super worn including underwear, stained or ripped clothing.
4. Designate a bin for items to keep!
5. Don’t feel like you have to keep everything for siblings - get rid of things you didn’t like in the first place.
6. Involve the kids! Have them join you to deliver the clothes you’re giving away.
7. Maintain your clean closet with an accessible bin. Use throughout the year, Throw in clothes your child tries on during the year that are too small, and then you can go through later.
8. Organize the clothes you’ve set aside by size.

Brooke is so right! My mom had a garage sale and sold ALL of her baby stuff, since she already had me and my sister she wasn't planning on having another. She sold her clothes, stroller, car seat, EVERYTHING! Little did she know that she was 4 weeks pregnant😂😂😂

Not hoarding for siblings is my BIGGEST problem. Its so true. I didn't realize I was hoarding until my girls closet was just over full. This has totally inspired me to film a toddler closet re-do on my channel. Thanks for sharing!

Right there with you... it's shockingly emotional. You remember seeing them wear some items dozens of times, and other items that still have tags. You remember when they wore them, and the nights you rocked them... :( It's a happy sad moment!

With 6 kids, 3 boys, 3 girls, my mom sometimes forgot which clothes had been passed down because we are all pretty close on age. so she put an x on the label, and every time it got passed down, she'd add another x-older kids had 1x, middles had 2, youngest had 3. This worked well to curb fights over who owned what clothes, and stopped mom from forgetting a shirt or pants had been passed down, putting in the wrong pile of clothes, and we ended up going to school looking like our clothes had shrunk in the wash. This cake in handy especially since if mom found a food deal, she would buy duplicates to save time.

Hand me downs are the best. I too made the mistake early on of keeping every little thing and last year my husband forced me to go through all the massive bins. It was really emotional I'll admit, but I kept some of my favorite baby/toddler outfits from my 3 kids. I passed on my daughter's clothing to other little girls in the neighborhood and I love seeing those cute babies in some of the clothing my daughter wore at that age. :)

love this! and i love how you all can share clothing with each other, what a lovely family and community you've built together. we recently moved and before we left with our then 6 month old daughter, many friends had gifted us with all their girl clothing they no longer needed! so much fun to wear a friend's dress that was their favorite when they were 1 or 2.

My mom has a keep bin of her favorites. We found them a while ago and it was so special for her and my dad to tell us all the things we did in that outfit and why they saved it. 20 years later the memories were just a good :)

+Kat -alicious you tend to get heaps of baby clothes piling up when you have kids. you get heaps of hand-me-downs and you dont really get rid of much until you do a massive declutter like this. Most of the clothes in this video would be things Ford wouldnt even fit into many more

Kids grow out of their clothes very fast. And when the family keeps all the undersized clothes, they would eventually end up a huge pile. It's really normal.

SO CLOSE TO 1M YES!!! You guys deserve it so much! I became a new mother last year and thankfully and ever so gratefully discovered this channel right on time. I have used so many tips and whenever I'm getting anxious I just start watching your videos and find myself so grateful and a lot happier in my circumstance. Oh Elle - I know what you mean ! I just did a major overhaul as my son is now 8 months ( our daughter is 3) and now that we are not having any more kids, (touch wood!) I did major clean out . And great mids think alike as I did it so similar to you too, and yes that ' too small' maintenance bin is awesome. I'm not sure why exactly, but I think this is one of my favorite videos from what's up moms! Maybe it's because the organizational approaches you use are so perfect for the busy mom ? I think that even with three toddlers I could still manage to do this in my home and I can see it working well for us. i have 2 daughters and when i found out my third (and final) was a boy we donated 7 39 gallon lawn bags FULL of clothes (most of which were already hand me downs and my SIL had already gone through for her daughter) of newborn-5/5t. it crazy how many clothes can accumulate.

I always kept the outfits my children's pictures were made in. They have a special spot in a box and I have the picture to go with it (shoes too)!!!!!!!! :)

A great idea for those baby clothes you just can't throw away is make then into a patchwork quilt. Each child can then have a wonderful memory and a cozy quilt.
