Over ten years ago I purchased 3 pair of scrub pants and they are worn out. My income is less than $750 a month now and I cannot afford to buy new clothes. My mother in law was a quilter and left a huge stash of cotton material when she passed. Thank you for sharing this gift of knowledge. Because I used to make all my own clothes and already know how to sew, I can now make skirts for myself. Your generosity has touched my heart. Bright Blessings.

Cheyenne, hi! Don'know if you will see this. Am new on KZbin. Are you needing scrubs? Let me know. I have some you can have if they are the right size. Am going to do some upcycling (capri & some type of top) with a couple but that still leaves some. Let me know.

Maybe you can make some to sell and increase your income,if you have quilters fabric.

@elizabethguzman6024 when I say that my mother in law was a quilter, I mean that she knew how to sew the fabric together and machine quilt it. She did not invest in high quality fabric and most of it is synthetic, not cotton. It's not really esthetically pleasing, but combined with some solid colors that I had on hand, it makes acceptable clothing for me. I enjoy knitting and crocheting more than sewing and am slowly accumulating product for fall craft shows. Thank you for taking the time to offer this suggestion. Bright Blessings.

@@cheyennestorey7591 i have often found that if you get onto the local "freecycle" or "buy nothing" groups, and say you are looking for old clothes to cut into patchwork, or fabric to make patchwork things... (especially if you say you want to make a patchwork skirt to wear) you will get a lot of free fabric, AND you may get people saying "if i have the fabric, can you make me one?"

I am a quilter and I love making scrappy quilts. But for the longest I’ve been wanting to make my own clothes and to dress modestly. I have a lot of quilting fabric so I want to turn my fabric into skirts for me to wear. Once I have so many I will donate my clothes to a clothes closet that don’t charge people for the clothes. I want to thank you for sharing these videos on how to make these skirts. I’m on a limited/ fixed income. I never have money to buy food for the whole month. So I can’t buy one of your skirts. But I have tons of scrap fabric already. I am going to keep watching your sewing videos so that I can learn to make my own clothes.

I saw a Doug and Stacy video, a while ago. I immediately said to my husband, "She's wearing a Heidi skirt!" LOL. I recognized the patchwork pattern, but the tie cord was the true give away. I love your skirts so much. I'm almost finished with one that I'm making through trial and a lot of error. Been out of the sewing game for too many years. I still have to give my "new to me" treadle machine some TLC. Can hardly wait to use her. I think I'll name her Heidi in honor of you. You truly are inspiring. I just love your videos, Heidi. Please, don't ever change and keep on keeping on. ♥️ 🪡

Nice 👍🏻 for the better explanation and presentation during a video recording you can use white plastic class board with magnets, fix fabric with small magnets on the board and it’ll be easier to show on camera and you don’t have to hold all pieces in your hands 🙌 🎉 thanks for sharing with us 🎉

I have been making patchwork skirts and four tier strip skirts for decades. The one that Stacy was wearing when she went out to the garden really caught my eye because of the colors and it was just made just a little differently. I did take a screenshot of it but never imagined I would run across your channel showing that you make them. Great job and I have gotten a couple of good ideas from you. Thanks! 🙏🕊🙏

I wanted to say thank you for this video... I had watched your channel many years ago & so admired it's content... Now, while once again doing chemo.. I so needed something to hold my mind.. Distract from treatment/pain... & uplift my soul (I also wear long skirts every day... I've had to move from my place in the Forrest (still keeping it) to be closer to the trail treatments.. As I was going through 12 year old storage boxes stacked to the ceiling in my new place.. I found a bag of scraps. Some 12x14 some smaller... But alot in these beautiful quilting fabrics all blending to match... Denim?! Where they came from I've no idea... I've quilted but these are old fabrics.. Some look japanese.. Again.. Idk... I just sat and sorted & ironed... Happy in the idea that "something" will come to me... I opened YT on my TV... And your video was there... So I will be making a skirt I will love (with pockets) in colour's that fit me & be able to do some thing that has me smiling for hours Ty again... From a stranger who feels blessed to have found your videos.... Again

So far, I made one for 2 yr old granddaughter, 6 yr old granddaughter, 11 yr old BFF 's granddaughter and an elderly, friend. 6 yes old g.d. I just used 7" strips of 3 different fabrics with a 4" light denim strip at bottom. I'm also using poly-cotton twine to crochet the drawstring. It's super cute! ..and cheap: $1 at dollar store! going back to some older videos so commenting late... from making "rag quilts" and also doing chenile cuts and exposed seams in various textiles... while you can do the "rag style" in ANY fabric you like? it will give you a fuller fringed look in things that are heavier- look for denim, flannel, or 'bottomweight' fabrics (also some canvas fabrics) you can test how they will look by cutting a small test patch, and throwing it in the wash.... oh, also, if you need a VERY hard wearing skirt? you can do a simple french seam by sewing it *as if* you were doing rag style, but with a narrow seam, and then folding the seam the other way, and sewing it right side together with just a bit wider seam. another option for a hard wearing skirt (or if you have time and like the looks) is to sew ribbon over the seams.

I work at a thrift store and found a pair of baggy chambray drawstring pants that already had a flat pocket. I am going to use the legs of the pants for some of the squares, and I cut the legs off 1 1/2" below the flat pocket. It is so easy to just now sew the tiers onto the top 12". I have more chambray shirts plus some men's plaid shirts to finish the tiers. I love the sweatpants waistband idea as well, and think putting some shirt fabric patches on the first tier would tie it all together. You have me in creative mode. Thank you for sharing your methods and ideas! God Bless!

I set the fabric squares out on the length of my queen size bed. I lay the fabric on top of eachother with a bit peeking out at the side, like playing cards. If that makes sense. Works pretty well! Hello Heidi, I've watched the skirt Playlist a few times but I'm glad you posted this update (I was kind of hoping for it)... I think I have enough fabric to make several skirts but my question is more fabric specific. I have cotton, blends, and sateen as well as heavier upholstery/curtain type fabric. Have you mixed fabric types when making these? Have u liked how they turned out? I'm guessing upholstery or heavier would be better suited for winter/colder Temps. I had actually started a skirt last spring but the squares I've completed were pieced together rather than the scissor cut/rip.
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have mixed all kinds of fabrics before from curtains (light weight and heavier weight), tablecloths, bedding, scarves, and more. As long as it is not too heavy it is not a problem, Just stay away from using thicker fabrics on the top tier as they will make the waistband too bulky

This might sound silly, but your skirt videos changed my life. I ended up making a patchwork one, then a prairie one out of bedsheets I loved (I wear that one daily), and another prairie one from thrifted sheets, then two Halloween fabric ones for me and my daughter. I am addicted and I feel so feminine, which is a big deal for me. I ONLY wear skirts now. My next goal is to make a ragged quilt style skirt, I have jeans and some material from the thrifted prairie skirt, but also a satin kind of tablecloth…? Not sure those would work together..? Do you ever have to hand cut fabric that won’t rip properly? Also have you tried fleece with the skirts? I’d imagine that’s too thick.

@RainCountryHomestead

I am not doing custom orders though I am making skirts to sell only as time allows. How it works is people email me at raincountryhomestead@gmail.com and let me know they want to be added to the skirt notification list. When I am able to complete a skirt, I send out an email to all on the list and then it is first come first serve. They sell within 10 minutes of sending out the email and there are over 200 people currently on the list so chance of getting one is slim and is all dependent on who sees the email and responds first. Right now it is the best i can do, which is why I created this video not just giving more tips on how to make them but to let people know about the full instructional playlist

I can only hand sew for now and I’d like to know what type stitches would be used for the different parts of the skirt?

I would use straight stitch for most of it and whip stitch on the drawstring hole, hem, and drawstring/elastic casing

Regarding the rag style skirt and the edges of the fabric, would pinking shears achieve the same effect as snipping the edges with a regular pair of scissors?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 6 ай бұрын
They should but for denim they are hard to use and it is near impossible to cut more than one layer at a time. Some may find it easier but I know it would take me much longer doing it that way. I do not cut my pieces out in the first place, I rip them because fabrics will rip straighter than cutting and it is much faster but with pinking shears you would need to cut every piece and only in a single layer at a time

I went straight to the other playlist & started the one that you talk about sizing in. I've only listened to that one once. You said you can make a child's skirt 18-45". @RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
Tips in general are covered in the video, color tips, well, it just depends on a person's eye. Not really sure now to teach people to look at colors other than pulling fabrics together and seeing how they look combined before cutting and laying out. If you start with a pretty print, then simply look at the colors in the print to find solids that would match

Heidi, how many patchwork skirts have you made for yourself that you wear?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead Жыл бұрын
I really do not know how many as I rotate my skirts. So when my work skirts have been patched and patched again and are just getting too thin, I then take one of my oldest nice skirts and make it a work skirt and then replace that one with a new one.

@Rain Country I asked bc I was thinking as I looked back over your skirt videos I would love to see a video with just the skirts you've made for yourself (or even including your most favorite skirts you've made via order) I would find it fascinating to see how you mix color together with patterns...bc this is one of my biggest challenges & why I think I've hesitated. I've always wanted to make my own clothes - but didn't have the confidence. I can sew somewhat bc I've made quilts and hemmed pants. But doing something for me, isn't something I've taken the time to do.

@RainCountryHomestead 10 ай бұрын
Depends on the length and size of squares you choose to go with and the width of the fabric. For the four tier I recommend 7 yards for narrow fabrics (36-45") and maybe 5 for 58-60"
