People were just bad back in the day. Most of us were kids and those that weren't didn't have much to compare to except mtg and pkmn. Or actual historical war but keeping people locked in trenches doesn't translate to "play skill drain" without thinking about the metaphor. They did pretty well though, scapegoat into Thousand Eyes backed up by removal was a pretty good one.
