Tips on using Apex Locators Effectively

This video focusses primarily on tips of using apex locators effectively.
Make sure your canals are dry as a dry canal will give you a more accurate reading. Take some paper points and make sure to dry it thoroughly before taking the reading. Ensure your canal is free of sodium hypochlorite, EDTA, or even pus, and then get in there and make an attempt to check the working length. Use #10 file to get initial working length, but if the canal is large, this file might give an inaccurate reading. The readings on the machine will vary a lot, but if file size is increased to 15 or even 20, there comes a steady reading that gives us the accurate measurement. On the flip side, if you are short of your working length, then decrease your file size. When your apex locator is in use, make sure your file is away from the sides of the tooth, as well as any metal fillings or crowns. Taking a radiograph along with usage of apex locator is suggested to understand the root anatomy better. Make sure your apex locator has a decent charge or it may not be accurate. Zero marking confirms that you are patent in your canal, that you have the true length of that canal, so ensure the zero before moving ahead.
