16:04. I gently used a small C clamp with plastic pads instead of thumb and figure.

Hey Dave! Just to clarify, it is not an adhesive bond that holds the sintered iron against the sheet metal as a rigid structure, but a designed in 'preload' by having the sintered iron cool in a controlled manner around the sheet metal such that there is interference between the two materials at the intended cooled temperature. Other than that, this tutorial video was very instructive! I did not consider using dimes as a mechanical lever for manipulating only the sheet metal for removing the axels, as it is very ductile in comparison to the sintered iron! Very good video, especially for those unsure of the dissimilar materials used in the manufacturing process!

Bob at SLE I’ve had excellent results with JB Weld as well, I have several cars and locomotive tenders on my layout that have been running with JB welded trucks for years without issue!

I cannot find anything on You Tube that explains how to replace knuckle couplers. Do you? Thank you.

If you want to replace a knuckle coupler it is best to have two needle nose pliers to spread the crimped coupler fastener. Remove the axle and wheel set nearest the coupler. Place tips of pliers on each crimped coupler side, squeeze down and bend outward, only enough to remove the coupler. Insert a new or rebuild coupler then squeeze the crimps as they were before, it is a simple process. If replacing a slotted knuckle coupler collapse then remove the split pin, remove and replace coupler with a slotted knuckle rod coupler, reinsert split pin, spread split pin. Does this help?

@@davesaftrains4368 Hello Daves AFTrains. Thank you for replying to me. I kind of thought that's what had to be done but I didn't have the confidence to try it. I didn't want to cause any unnecessary damage. This is all I had to hear. Thank you and best wishes.

Why do you use a dime to remove the axles, but a penny to replace them? What is the difference? Thanks.
@davesaftrains43682 жыл бұрын
Good observation, it is really a personal preference, however sometimes based upon the type of truck a dime is an easier fit. My selection is not very scientific, just whatever fits and works best, Thank you for watching! DavesAFTrains

@@davesaftrains4368 Thanks for the reply. I thought you might say "9 cents". I have to replace a knuckle coupler and now I know how to remove the axle that is in the way.

Awesome job Dave!!! Great ideas using the coins as a support surface to spread the truck frames. I never even gave it a thought. Your videos are awesome!!!

Never knew how the sintered trucks were put together. Explains why they don’t go back together easily. Thanks for the lesson!😄

Really good show! I hav bought dozens of kc cars with loose side frames. I just put a dab of a super glue right into the inside of the side frame none has ever come loose even the cars that I glued in the late 90s. The glue in the tiny bottles sold in pairs seems much stronger that the glue in the tubes. I have no Idea why but I have tried to muscle off a side frame I glued 10 to 20 years ago with not much luck and I was known in the 9th grade to have very strong fingers. Good luck with the glue in the bottles found at the 99 cent stores.

My best way to PERMANENTLY attach truck side to metal center aside is to drill and tap #2 machine screw from top of removed truck. The r &r of truck is more trouble but the repair is strong and permanent.
