I just stumbled upon your video a few months ago- I was born in Mexico adopted at 8 and lived here in america since- lost my Spanish around age 10- had no one to speak w and English was priority for everyone and i can't seem to recover my Spanish!

This is the first thing my fluently bilingual husband told me about speaking in Spanish: Don’t’ try to translate in your head. Think in Spanish. Once I started doing this, my Spanish improved dramatically. Also, learning Spanish in chunks is very helpful. The Spring Spanish KZbin channel teaches Spanish this way.

Great advice, that's the key in learning a new language. The most difficult part is the starting point but don't give up. I'm on my way on learning french & russian, so I know the difficulties that there can be. By the way, I'm also a native spanish speaker, so .... Saludos a todos!

How exactly does one "think" in Spanish though? I have tried but sometimes you get stuck and have to use English for reference
@KW-12
@KW-12 Ай бұрын
@@pureone8350 that's the hard part, but if you keep practicing and expand your vocabulary, you'll eventually get used to think un spanish. In spanish (formal): Esa es la parte difícil, pero si sigues practicando y expandes tu vocabulario, eventualmente te acostumbrarás a pensar en Español.

It's just like English. Even in English, we don't always know every word that we are about to say before spitting out our thoughts/sentences. We have sentence fragments in English that have memorized and are so used to saying. This is such a helpful approach for learning Spanish. Thanks!

The dual-self dialogue is really funny and accurate! I have noticed that the lag time in my translation is due not only to translating English to Spanish but also first figuring out what I'm going to say in English! I wasn't aware of how little forethought goes into what normally comes out of my mouth. (Not always a good thing, either)

Mexican American who has always dreamed of FLUENCY in Spanish. My mom used to talk to me in Spanish and I to her in English, but now I'm speaking to her in Spanish because I can be confident with her. I also forced myself to work at a Mexican restaraunt which is still a bit hard but after half a year im able to form better conversations and become more confident. A Spanish speaking environment has helped me learn casual and conversational Spanish so well. I learn the slang and even insults, I gain lots of confidence. Half of these people can't even speak English so I shouldn't ever feel embarassed if I mess up in Spanish, at least I'm trying to be billingual. I want to learn more languages but Spanish has always been my priority. I want to hold my culture close to heart and teach my children it. I'm learning latin Spanish but I want to work in Spain... so maybe I'll just focus on European Spanish through KZbin lol

When things are obvious, and we're clever, but we still don't see them until they're pointed out. And you just pointed out something super obvious, but in the year I've been learning Spanish, I never noticed it. And no-one else pointed it out to me. Your two-way chat with yourself hit me hard. What a brilliant observation. Plus you've put it across so naturally, and stress-less, but without arrogance, which in itself is a talent. Thank you, my good man. I was just starting to feel very sorry for myself, stuck in 2nd gear, almost ready to drop it all, and you just changed all that, in one simple video. Brilliant. Thank you.

You are a wonderful teacher. You do what all good teachers do. You make your lessons relevant to the student. You provide multiple examples of what to do (say, consider etc.) and explain why. Also, by displaying various backgrounds as you walked, you made us curious about what was going on and therefore engaged. I don't know if you consciously knew the value of that, or if it was something subconcious and intuitive, but it was highly effective. Perhaps being a poor Spanish student in high school is what makes you an excellent Spanish teacher now. Full marks (from a SPED teacher 😉).

Great advice, I see that 2 weeks ago Wayne Yinger mentioned something, that happens to me which causes the slow train effect! i.e. time taking to think of what you want to say firstly in English, then translating it in your head before actually saying it! This I suppose is at the very essence of learning to think in Spanish. The problem is this becomes an elongated train in itself and because that's how we all start it becomes a bad habit to break. I find what helps is to pick a subject you know well like a hobby (e.g. gardening / growing / caring etc etc) then conjure phrases and use masses of repetition. I do this with my native Spanish teacher who luckily loves gardening! The good thing is that you can go straight to Spanish with the initial idea forming activity of what you want to say. Its still also an issue for me though, so thanks for your 'chunking' ideas which is a development from what I have been doing, Saludos Steve

I think your idea of using "chunks" instead of individual words may be a good idea (in addition to using phrases in which the verb is already conjugated so we don't have to think about it as you mentioned in another video). That has much in common with how we acquire our first language (we don't know anything about conjugating verbs when we first learn to speak).
