To all of Carolyn's friendslys who own pop up campers. The way you can keep mice away during the winter is. When you close up your campers for the winter is go to the grocery store and buy perfume dryer sheets and put the sheets all over the inside of the camper, on top of the beds and in the cabinets and even on the floor . Anywhere they come in. On the outside of the camper put steel wool in all of the holes so that they don't go in . Tried it and it works..

Thank you for the video. This past winter we completely packed every hole with peppermint pellets and it did not work. I bought the little packets with peppermint, I had peppermint pellets all over the ground and in compartments, peppermint everywhere. However, no peppermint oil. So the trick seems to be that peppermint oil coating everything works much better than the peppermint pellets.

We have had rodents in our RV and we have found that Irish spring grated helps as well. We put all around the outside and under the rv especially the under the cab. Put some in the drawers towards the back.. we also put it a little heavier around and on top of the tires. We are in Ohio where the winters are cold longer so we put insulated tubing all down the slide out on the inside and outside and has helped keep them from coming inside, when one got in it couldn’t find its way out because of the tubing covering all the slide out. It then went up and behind the flap on the burners and I keep a mouse trap there and got him that night. I also put steel wool with tape in the opening of the fresh and grey water tank. They also because it’s not sealed very well found big nesting beds in the generator area so lots of Irish spring there with peppermint spray. So I feel your issue. So glad you solved it.

Stored my motorhome over the winter, which was really mild in MN this year. Came back and first thing I did was checked the drawers. Saw mouse poop and remnants of acorns in every one and even a small pile in my bed. Never had an issue with mice and the only food I had left was a box of spaghetti, which was untouched and some spices and condiment packs. They chewed into the condiment packs. Since I've been back I've only seen evidence in one drawer they at least once came back to visit when I was gone for a couple of days. I've kept a string of lights on under the coach and when it gets warm and dry I'll go through all the cargo holds. It seems they came in for a warmer place over the winter, and I hope that's the case. I'll add some peppermint inside and outside. BTW, they were in the drawer where I kept an opened box of dryer sheets and that didn't deter them at all.

Just a note, peppermint oil also keeps spiders away, they don't like the smell either and it sill even kill them if you spray them with your peppermint spray. I make a homemade spider spray using just essential oils, castile soap, white vinegar and water and it works great.

When I was growing up, my Mom (who came from an area of the country with a lot of pests) was ADAMANT about eating at the table and ONLY the table. NO food anywhere else in the house. Crumbs and sticky stuff was cleaned thoroughly and immediately. All food was wrapped up tight. I thought she was neurotic. Until I grew up and got my first apartment in a buggy part of the world and saw how my messy ways brought me way too many unwanted houseguests. So now I avoid eating in my vehicle, keep it clean, and I have huge gallon glass jars and keep food in plastic bags inside the big jars. No mice (yet!). Thanks, Mom! I lived in a house built in 1840. Mice had pheromone tracks going back generations. I did many things to conquer the mouse problem, but the most successful was having a dachshund. They are bred as vermin hunters and are relentless when they hear/smell mice or other rodents. Never had a mouse problem as long as the doxy was on patrol. Mice smell a dachshund and they leave! Before the dachshund I baited live traps and drove the mice 5 miles from the house to release them. The problem is, for every mouse you find, there are probably more than 20 babies in the walls. They are fertile a few weeks after birth. 6 generations during the winter months. Assuming half are female, that’s one million mice - if they survive. Get rid of them as soon as you find them!

I think its because whe you kick some out, others move in, ones that probably couldnt because it was occupied. Thats what i noticed wheni started trapping and reelasing them. I was even using motion sensors to detect them, so was sure i had it down to 1, then i saw 2 show up in my room, these weren different mice, the other mouse wouldnt dare do that, and they had a different colour, so i think some new ones moved in, and we have access from outside. Its also an older building and we got racoons too lol i heard them fighting one night and also walking in the vents to confirm they were inside. This was on the bottom floor. Theres a bar downstars so no one lives there and is empty during the night so theyve managed to live unoticed i suppose. And if they can get it, the mice can get in im sure and probably why they keep showing up -new ones come in once theres a vacancy. Just a theory. If you cant get a pet, mouse proofing from the outside is probably youre last option. There could be the tiniest of entrance to get in , or years of tunnels and secret passages if its an old house. They dont magically spawn out of the walls and it does take some time and a good food source for them to have many offspring. I fed a family one winter and there was only 6 in the end when i trapped in the spring, they didnt explode, but there always seems to be 1 left that you miss and starts the next generation. The motions sensors helped that, finally telling you if there was any left.

Peppermint oil - what a great idea! I too found the snap traps to be the most humane. It was very clear that they did not suffer and their lifeless bodies would not kill oils, hawks, cats or other critters. The worst year we got a dozen. Peanut butter was what worked well for us too - perhaps the strong scent called to them. What a great video - the warning about the steel wool was brilliant. Vibrations of driving would cause it to rub away the coating and then it would short to the chassis of the vehicle..

Thank you for not using poison or glue traps! I've had a lot of success in my sticks and bricks with both the rodent repellent foam for cracks and holes and spraying the perimeter with Tomcat Rodent Repellent, which is safe for use around pets when used as directed. I also spray my engine compartment and the perimeter/ tires of my van with Tomcat. The ingredients include peppermint, clove, and cinnamon, and it's a lot cheaper than essential oils.

Hi Carolyn, it's funny how this video just popped up in my youtube feed as I'm sitting in front of my laptop watching youtube and making peppermint sachets. I have been dealing with mice or rats for a few weeks now in my mobile home here in FL. I have been living in this home now for about 9 years and have never seen a mouse. Well my husband saw one in his bathroom a few weeks ago and it's been driving me crazy. I've been exterminating, and filling holes around the plumbing in our cabinets where I believe they are coming in using copper mesh wire I found on Amazon and it works better then the steel wool. I defuse either peppermint or citronella essential oil throughout my house. We don't have any pets. I just heard one tonight in my ceiling. I'm 68 years old and they creep me out. I started a garden a few years ago so I almost feel like my gardening has brought them in, however I have never seen any out in the garden. I have seen traces of them in my shed as well as various places inside my house on the floor. Because I cannot use any chemical cleaning agents, I clean my floors with vinegar and water with a few drops of essential oils. I'm making sachets to hang inside all of my cabinet doors and in closets though out my 2 bedroom 2 bath house. I made some peppermint spray with water and spray along all the baseboards, because I found out that's how they travel inside your house along the baseboards. I purchase some 1/4" metal mesh screen to place all along the bottom outside of my mobile home skirting. I hope that once I get all the entry point closed off I'll be mice/rat free I don't like sharing my home with these critters.

Wanted to find out where they were getting in my van. Looked at rear doors and suspected the gaps under the doors and stuffed them with steel wool and rags. Set up camera and light last night to see, and sure enough, that was at least where I saw quite a few mice and possibly rats trying to get in. Argh!! They did not get in as far as I know last night, but setting up a camera and finding their entry ways is imperative. When you find the holes and or gaps you need to figure out a way to seal them up permanently. Which is where I am now...Bob Wells recommends a bucket of water system to kill them more humanely. I'm a big wuss, so trying to figure out the solutions now. (p.s. I have blinking lights under my hood and under the area below the engine (5 of them.)

I recently had house mouse problems so I purchased “Shake Away” mouse repellent, it has peppermint, cedar and rosemary oil. Like you, I got out the steel wool fine gage and plugged up holes then I thoroughly cleaned and after that I caught 5 mice in the catch and release plastic traps. I think they got trapped inside after the holes were all plugged. I released them in the woods away from homes and two miles away from my home and then the last thing I did was the peppermint Shake Away, after that no more mice. I don’t like the cellophane it comes in but they are small and easily taped to places like inside an old chimney and in the doorways, good to know about the spray. Yes pets can have a problem with the toxicity so excellent warning! But Peppermint really works!!

My point being...peppermint extract for cooking wouldn't be poison for Sadie but appears to work just as well to repel mice. :)

Using enzyme cleaners will eliminate the organic stuff and odors followed by a hospital grade bio disinfectant. Using a vacuum is not a great idea as tiny particles of the germs they carry can get past filters and you don't want germy turds contaminating the components of vac blowing in your space every time you use vac. They get inside through the areas around the wiper cowling on some vehicles. It can be tedious but using light, smoke(incense smoke ) or steam to find any hole to plug up is worth the effort.

And old RV'er had a mouse issue and at the time I was having them in my house I had moved into and they suggested old Irish Spring soap the green bars and place them around. After I did that for the next 14 years I never had a mice issue other than the strangler from time to time come late Fall. Also, if you are parked for any amount of time you can get scented dryer sheets and put one in the tailpipe, on the tires, under the hood of the RV and anywhere else you can think it would be helpful at. These two things are not harmful to your pets if they get them but the mice doesn't like the scents and well if they chew on the soap and drink some water you can imagine that one seeing how rodents can't burp or fart.

When I was living in my RV lying in my bed hearing mice watching one of my cats go on guard duty I would bang on all the walls to try to scare the mice out😂😂 Now that I have a neighbor who smokes pot off and on all day everyday and I'm being forced to get high on a daily basis and have 27 years of sobriety I am seriously considering moving back into my rv. All 3 of my kitties have respiratory problems now😢

Another helpful video! Thank you Carolyn. I used to put peppermint oil on cotton balls around the inside of the RV before we were living in it full time. It seemed to help. Of course I don't do that anymore, but the cat(s) seem to be a deterrent - and no bodies yet! Have a great weekend.

Hi, Caroline. I like watching your videos. I am a single woman and have been RVing 20 years, half of it full-time and I now have a winter base. If you’re really squeamish, I suggest putting your old fashioned mouse traps in small paper bags laid on their side. Then if you don’t mind the cost you can throw the whole bag-mouse and trap-away at the same time. Alternatively, if you’re lucky enough to be near hardy friends, you can recruit them into your DMDU. Anyone you can recruit can belong to the…Dead Mouse Disposal Unit! Actually, I have been known to ask strangers to become a part of my DMDU. Kind of like asking that tall person to reach something in the supermarket. I have a cat who is a great warning system. You can pretty much tell you have mice if your cat sits there like a sphinx and stares at a vent! It seems like those mice don’t come out to play. Here’s an extra tip. Do not park with any tree branches, leaves or shrubs touching your RV. The only times I’ve ever had ants they’ve marched in from low-hanging branches and shrubs. I also carry garden clippers. Every once in a while, some judicious pruning comes in handy. Maybe we’ll cross paths at some point. I was camping at Greenbelt national park in Maryland and a friend pulled in. She said, “I know, I know, I said I was going to Alaska.”

I had two mice chew through the plastic cap on a bottle of sesame seed oil. They couldn't get out so they drowned! Use metal caps!

mice come in because of the smell of food, water, and they stay cause it is safe and warm. and thousands of places to make a nest.

and when warm. crawl under and plug up all the holes, varied ways. that also helps keep you warm / cool, pending the season.

Peppermint oil don't work done it been there they don't mind it.

Some people have success with it and some don't. I read that after some time they CAN get used to the smell, but it seems that's the case more with rats than mice.

Yes, old fashioned mouse traps. I had them in my kitchen hiding & at night my traps would snap & if I’d hear it, I would go get it right then also. Reset it and sometimes 2 in one night!

I was going to bid on what appeared to be a brand new Fleetwood Vibe. Let me say first off, new or not new, that Travel Trailer was build like a kids toy. What a piece of garbage. With that said I would have bought it at a low price and tried to flip it. Everything looked right until I noticed by the sink cabinet area a dead mouse.I had experience with a VW Golf the dealer sent to auction becuase of a mouse chewing up the battery cover. I bought it from a dealer $7,500 off sticker with 50 miles (FIVE ZERO) on it. I never had any issues. I think whatever dealer had this did the same. The mouse was dead right next to all kinds of plubming and wiring. I just don't want to dealm with that kind of head ache.

Thanks for another great video. Very good info. I will be getting some peppermint oil. I agree with you. Set mouse traps, let it catch and kill the mouse and be done with it. Safe travels to you and Sadie.
