Great video. I’m currently two semesters away from graduating and I’ve been applying to internships like crazy and still no luck. The most I ever had was a phone screening and an interview. Just applied to 3 more today. I’ve gotten resume tips, cover letter advice, you name it but I’ve still gotten no internship. What I haven’t done is put a link to my portfolio in my resume or cover letter so I’m going to try that and see how it goes!!!

@@Franchyze923 Update. I finally got a GIS internship and have been there for two months! I graduate in one semester and have been thinking about what kind of job I want to get when I graduate. I’ve got a computer science background, but the software developer entry level is so flooded and hard to get Into so I feel like I could get a gis analyst or gis developer job. Honestly, I want a job that maybe has a mix of coding and gis work in it. Do you have any advice?

I tell everyday people I make custom interactive clickable maps. I don't get very technical. I only say it pulls information from an Excel table and shows on the map. People don't like babbling. I graduated with a degree in Geography with emphasis in GIS. Since graduating, I’ve held geospatial jobs (and had 2 years in IT), but none of the GIS jobs used ArcGIS or ESRI products, and Im finding it hard to move into an Analyst position, which is unfortunate because I’ve been in the field for a total of about 7 years now. I’ve done aerial imagery, field collection, lidar and GIS (using proprietary software or smallworld). Im working on getting a website together since I know HTML, CSS, and JS and then learn more about QGIS to put some projects on the portfolio page. I’d love to add some web projects in there too. Any ideas for projects that I could add to move me to the next level?

Some general tips - 1) Know your worth. Check Glassdoor, levels.fyi, reddit etc. to see what others with similar job titles/levels of experience are making. It can vary a lot by region. 2) Research each company you interview with. See what kinds of salary ranges they usually offer. 3) Realize that you can also negotiate things besides salary, like vacation, sign on bonus etc. Good luck!

Sorry I am looking for advice. I am a risk engineer by trade but I really hate the oil and gas field. I live near Philly. I do a lot of data analytics work in reliability engineering (risk and probability, KPIs). I also know how to do ML algorithms and Folium in Python. However, I do hope to get a Data analyst job first to get more exposure to SQL and data analytics experiences in a non-industrial niche area. I see that a local utility company is looking for data analysts for GIS, and I am very interested. May I know more from you about the job prospects of a GIS analyst? I am also looking to see if there is any mobility in terms of me moving to NYC or other cities in the US in the future.

This "career" has made me not far from homelessness. I hate this field and wish I never wasted all my time and money studying it in school and trying to get a job plus only working contracts. If anyone were to ever ask me about getting into GIS, even if they're really passionate about it I'd tell them to turn around, and RUN in the opposite direction. Just completely destroyed me mentally and financially. The flooded competition plus the lack of jobs make it impossible to get a job. I've been unemployed for almost two years.

@Franchyze923
@Franchyze923 3 жыл бұрын
@@GlovesupSwampy An analyst role shouldn't have you responsible for developing new features/functionality. Usually you are using tools someone else developed to answer some sort of question. Developers on the other hand listen to the needs of analysts and develop the tools. If a company is asking you to do development type work then that needs to be reflected in the salary. An analyst might be required to understand basic SQL and Python to perform certain repetitive functions (like a standard query that always gets run on new datasets or being able to run a python tool from command line) but again, usually an analyst won't be developing this stuff.
