Tips to Visiting Andy's Orchids - Winter 2021 Open House Orchid Nursery Tour

In this episode, I'll dive a little deeper into my experience at Andy's Orchids. I recently went to the Winter 2021 Open House and it was really neat to see what's in bloom this time of year. I'll share with you a few things to know before you go and what to check out if you go visit.

I would be so overloaded with all the info., need and want for every orchid species, and just amazement for the diversity of orchid species. So jealous!

Thank you! I really enjoyed your tour. It was concise, with easy to follow, great to know tips and the filming excellent. I will certainly get to Andy's next time we get to the coast. I am in the Phoenix area so orchid growing can be daunting at times but it is a passion. I am really looking forward to other orchid nursery tours and, of course, your own orchid journey.

It's sad that most shows aren't happening this year. Hopefully it will get better soon. If you make it down to the San Diego area, there's more than one place to visit for orchids :)

Ophrys sphegodes ssp. sphegodes is native in my area (Central Europe) and it should be fully hardy along the Pacific coastline. It likes a mix mostly made of anorganic matter because it rots easily. It seems to depend on its symbiotic fungi for protection from other microbes which makes the long-term culture a bit challenging. Some people use a mix of sand, pumice, potting soil and loam, or just pure sand while others grow it planted outside in their garden soil. The media should be neutral to basic. At least im my area, summers receive as much rain as winters, maybe a bit less but still 2.5 inches, so there is no dry season. In its native habitats in my area, water drains away very quickly, so the soil is never wet. Plants from more southern populations may receive little to almost no rain in summer.

Yea, the website is not the most user-friendly. I tend to browse via the Orchid Listings or Search function. Email may be a better option than calling via phone. Good luck!
