working with plastic you truly have to think outside the box, I work in a company that mainly make plastic parts in Europe. I also work on 2 spindle lathes and there's no same work. Working with coolant isn't good most the time, high pressure air is better for outside cutting and most of the time you don't have to machine the contour from outside of your stock material, you can save machining time by starting from your chuck and then comming out. But it's better to work with collets. Also the Citizen vibrating feature is super useful for plastic, look it up it's worth your time, if someone is curious.

About chips sticking to the tool, Haas made a video about it. Apparently you can back out the drill, reverse the spindle and dwell of a second and that should eject the ships.

Machining plastic is all I want to do. I love it. Tool wear is minimal, speeds and feeds are lightning and my hands stay clean!!!!!! While I have medical on the lathe and aerospace on the vmc, I'm making a fish tank! Oh yeah, there is no money in plastics and it's really hard to do. Stay away;)

Easy there man. Lots of plastics are abrasive and will eat up carbide, and wait until you get a job where the plastics are filled with graphite or other materials. Acetal is the best for machining. Nylon eats carbide like no tomorrow. I use PCD.

You'd be surprised at what polycarbonate will do to carbide. We do a shit load of plastic at my shop and make a shit load of money doing it. We ship 6000-12000 parts a week to our medical customer. We buy and machine enough polycarbonate on a monthly basis, that when we buy material, we change the price for everybody west of the Rockies.

I'm not sure about turning plastic, but I've gotten good results milling sides of plastic dry at 600SFM... It seems to kinda melt the plastic and give it a glossyish finish. Never drill or tap dry though, unless maybe there's time. I also got good results milling some gummy steel dry at 400 and there was somehow less deflection. That same part you can turn it at 550, bury the radius of the 431 (Been so long don't remember the tooling that well) on the finishing pass for axial at about .0035IPR. Get something like a 64 finish which is phenomenal for that material and how it's ran on other machines.

@shadowdsfire
@shadowdsfire 2 жыл бұрын
It's called burraway and made by Cogsdill. We've tried it for machining similar bushings but in steel and they didn't work very well for us. The holes were too big compared to the OD/ID diameters and so the deburring was really oval and inconsistant.
@dan3718
@dan3718 2 жыл бұрын
We use them where I work and they work really well for us but we mainly use them in hand drills so you can stop spinning and push it through the backside of the hole. The tension screw is how I am guessing they are stopping it from opening up the ID of the hole. You can loosen the tension so much that as soon as pressure is applied it retracts the blade in the shank and no cutting edge is exposed.

We use 'em in aluminum for riveting aircraft sheet together. They don't remove enough material on the way thru that it affects the rivet tolerance, if used correctly. However they get expensive when the noobie runs one through a part that had two bad holes that intersected (trying to knock off the burrs so the sheet could still lay flat) and the deburr flap 'snags' in that gap and the sudden force shatters the drill shank. It's me. I'm the noobie.

What's the name of that spring loaded deburring tool you used on those plastic holes? Do they make these same types of deburring tools that will work on aluminum or steel? I work on air rifle projects that require holes to be drilled through the receiver walls and it's incredibly difficult to deburr the inside edges of those holes. This tool looks like it would be just the ticket. Without deburring those inside hole edges the O-Rings that get slid into the receivers can get shredded.

a lot of thin walled plastics tend to "pop" after part off, wondering how you're dealing with this. maybe the tolerance is wide enough to not matter, or if this material is less prone to that

We use them on aluminum and stainless. The tension screw is key for what material you are using them for, the harder the material the tighter the tension and the softer the material the lighter the tension screw.

We turn PA6 parts that looks like T in it´s cross-section view 170/160 for 5mm then 175/155 for 5mm, relatively thin part.... I measure them before putting it out of the fixture, they´ll bend like a hell and after you open the jaws you´ll have hard time to measure them correctly... for most of my plastic parts I say if they´re on spot in machine, they´ll be right on the spot when they´ll mount them into their place...
