How to make your own ph test solution from anthocynins (red/purple cabbage)
• NO AQUARIUM PH TEST KI...
Link to how plants, algae & blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) grow on a nutrient and elemental level!
"Nitrogen Crash & Recovery As a Lesson on Plants, Algae, cyanobacteria and limiting factors".
• NITROGEN CYCLE CRASH. ...
TIPS & TRICKS FOR FINDING WATER PARAMETERS, USING NATURAL CLUES & WITHOUT USING AQUARIUM TEST KITS OR TOOLS.
Ph, TDS, NUTRIENTS & MORE.
Ph- home reagent from cabbage
TDS - 10 TO 20 dollar probe... or you can evaporate water and with a finely tuned MG level scale, calculate the weight of
Ammonia / meds...foam. 10gallon aquariums takes a million drops...
Or MG of weight per liter of water evaporated.
part per billion is out of 10,000 gallon pool.
Ring around the glass
Green Algae - complex...but usually means too much light or elevated nitrogen, phosphates... lacking potassium, micros or carbon (co2)
Silicates- diatomaceous algae on hard surfaces.
NITROGEN shortage- old leaves fall away leaving rough stem (smooth is reachint for light) bottom leaves are clear or yellow/brown /pale and melting off,
New ones pale. Vivid when low but not dire. Also plants grow denser with low nitrates and grow less side shoots.
PHOSPHATE- veins look lighter, leaf darker and leaves fall away
POTASSIUM - holes in leaves, pin holes and yellowing edges
IRON - nerves/veins green with leaf yellowing
MAGNESIUM- dark color veins on older leaves.
MANGANESE- SPOTS, HOLES WHITE OR LIGHT EDGES.
CALCIUM - stunted wrinkled odd shaped leaves. Soap will react with calcium and leave a film on your hands If it is high
shells rings... calcium kh and gh
Hard water - delicate rotalas mayca, cabomba, tonina fl, dying ...
Fish colors red gills or eyes and gasping for air/foaming of water's
surface...ammonia or nitrite spikes or fish are living in incorrect ph

Great video, I just saw the API test kit at the store has doubled in price since I bought it a year ago. Definitely will use these hacks when I run out of the test kit

It helps to check with the API tests or some sort of test strip while you learn to get the hang of it...but once you start getting good at reading the Ecology! You wont need the kits anymore

I have been on a water perimeter marathon on your channel. I have a question. When I am testing my water with test kits, what are the ideal perimeters? All I have figured out is that nitrates should never be higher than 40ppm for thriving fish. I also have a pH of 8 in my area. I have added Indian almond leaves and there is wood that is supposed to act a lot like the leafs, but I cannot remember the name. Regardless, in five months with three aquariums, I have not seen the pH go down. Do you think that's a big deal? I have bettas, ghost shrimp, all kinds of plants and snails. What should the nitrites and ammonia be kept at? You also mentioned something about ammonium? If I understand correctly, it's not something I will deal with, with my high pH? Or is it? If so, is there a test for that one? I know this is a ton of questions, but I'm overwhelmed with all the information and decided I would just ask. I have been trying to remember to go through your channel to use the Amazon links for my shopping to help you out. I really do appreciate all your videos!

The fact that you care at all... means your tank is likely very nice compared to most. For an Amazonian type waterway you would ideally want to see 4 to 10 kh and gh, a ph between 6.0 and 7.4 , temp 76-84f a TDS of 50- 250 ppm No ammonia. No nitrites and 0 to 60ppm nitrates with plants enjoying 20 to 50 ppm nitrates. Without plants, its ideal to just have 0 nitrates, nitrites or ammonia ...meaning your biological filtration is 100% effective at transforming your biological waste. Cheers!

Thank you so much for the speedy reply. We are just getting over a sickness that kicked our rears, so I'm a little slow on my end. 🥴 My pH is naturally at 8.0 in my area. I have added different things that are supposed to lower it naturally, but I do not see it budge. Do you think it's OK to just let it be as long as it never climbs? How often should a person check for pH? Does that really change much?

Super helpful. Will the sea chem Flourish kill any of my plants like the vowel, because I know not to use the sea chem excel or also called flourish excel because you said once in the video that you think that will kill the Val. Am I understanding this correctly I desperately need your help on this one.
