After a lot of problems with installing 700x25 Gatorskins I found that the The Kool Tire Bead jack works pretty well, but there's another problem. When you pry the bead on, the part of the bead opposite begins to pop out. You can chase that space clear around the tire. What worked for me was to use a CABLE TIE to grip around the tire where it pops out, so it doesn't pop out again. I've seen a wire wrap used to this purpose. The tight tie is not-removable, so you have to cut it off when you're done. I've keep a single edge razor blade in my tire kit along with the tire levers.

I just had exact problem with Gatorskin 700c X 23, I used boot laces to trap the tire from peeling off the opposite side, now am scared of getting a puncture whilst out, and not being able to get tyre back on, it was hugely difficult and snapped three plastic tyre levers, are these tyres cut slightly too small or something? so many people seem to be having problems with them. Am not a novice by any means, came close to taking them back, but had already taken the labels and whatnot off.

I have arthritis in my hands and I have the Crankbrothers speed lever but its really still hard to get the tire back on after fixing a flat. The only change to the video I've made is that one starts away from the valve in placing the bead on the rim. This is because the valve is fixed in place and the rest of the tire is more likely to slip into the grove in the middle of the rim. Move around until there's a small amount of bead left to either the right or left of the bead (so you won't damage the valve). Now, either by hand or using an accessory (Crank Brothers Speedier Lever or Kool Stop Bead Jack), push the remaining part of the bead over the rim. Also see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJOykGNpp7Cshs0 Regards, Tony

Good tips - I came here to learn how to handle a difficult road tire while riding, not in the luxury (and warmth) of an indoor shop. Thankfully, you approach this issue from that point of view, except for the tip about baby powder. :) I was not aware of the Crank Bros tire lever, which does look like it provides more leverage than a standard tire lever. Have one on order for my bike bag.

Some suggest starting away from the valve and working your way around each side, shaking the tire beads toward the center to give you more room. Periodically repeat the shaking of the tire bead as you go. This centers the tire in the central groove giving you a little more room and help shake the tube up into the tire (here's where pre-coating the tube with talc or you can use corn starch comes in handy). When you get closer to the valve, let all the remaining air out and push the valve up into the tire out of the way. Use the palms of your hands to push the bead up and over. If you're using a tool such as the Crank Brothers Speedier Lever, come in from one side up to but not past the valve (which can be damaged by the tool). Then come in from the other side and as you get close to the valve the bead should snap on. Regards, Tony

Yes, you need to push the bead into the center of the rim where there's a slight grove making the circumference smaller. Periodically shake the tire beads toward the center as you work. Some suggest inserting the bead starting away from the valve and working toward the valve on each side. When you get close to the valve, push the valve up and away. Then complete inserting the bead (you may be able to do this by hand without an additional tube. Seating the bead on tubeless mtb tires can be the real trick. For that, see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6rFf4GZg56so8k&ab_channel=GlobalMountainBikeNetwork Regards, Tony

Don't forget to put some talc (baby powder) on the tube to allow you to shake the tube up into the tire as you go to prevent pinch flats. When using the Crank Brothers Speedier Lever, I inserting the bead of the tire at the valve and move around to either side. This keep the Speedier Lever from damaging the valve. However, when putting on the tire by hand or any other means, I start away from the valve, insert the tire bead on either side, shake the tire to the center of the rim groove of the rim as I go (gives me a little more room by having less wheel diameter), and finish inserting the tire bead at the valve. Give these a try and let me know how it works out. Regards, Tony

Yes, centering the bead in the well of the rim is the key, BUT. Sometimes, there are two things that are working to push that bead out under the hook. A: the residual air in the tube. Actively sucking the air out can help. With TPU tubes, some residual pressure helps avoid pinch punctures, so careful management of the pressure as the bead goes over is needed. B: the natural spring of the casing sometimes actively pushes the bead back under the hook. Laying a heavy cord into the rim beside the seated portion of the bead forces the bead toward the well. Finally, a third problem can be that the tube's valve reinforcement interferes with seating the bead: pressing the valve up into the tire makes sure it's out of the way (you've mentioned this in some replies, but not in the video).
@tony10speedАй бұрын
Not tried the heavy cord hack but will give it a try. Removing the air and pressing the valve up into the tire casing are real keys. Also see our later video on tire installation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qamyoqeEebWSrLc&ab_channel=TonyMarchand Thanks and regards, Tony

I just worked on a 700c wheel with a rim that is by design a really tight fit for any tire. it had two layers of standard rim tape installed. After replacing with one thinner high performance high pressure tape, the extra space in the center channel allowed for much easier install.
@tony10speed Жыл бұрын
If you're using standard rim tape such as Velox, one layer is all you need for clinchers. However, if you're using tubeless tape such as Stan's Tubeless which is very thin to begin with, two layers are required for clinchers since the high pressure in the tube could otherwise cause a blow out at one of the spoke holes. If you had two layers of Velox or similar tape on the clincher wheel, the wheel make didn't know how to build a wheel. If you had tubeless tape, you better put a second layer back on. Can you identify the type of rim tape you have?
@jimmylovesbikes Жыл бұрын

Starting opposite the valve was a gamechanger for me. Thanks!
@tony10speed4 жыл бұрын
Glad it worked for you. This seems to be a controversial point. Some advocate starting opposite to the valve and centering the tire bead in the wheel where there is a slight depression giving you a little more room (smaller circumference) and working your way around toward the valve. As you work your way around, you continue to center the bead periodically, until you reach the last portion of bead near the valve. Then push up on the valve to get the tube and valve up into the tire. Finally, push the rest of the tire bead on by hand. This works with some tire/wheel combinations. But when using an accessory tool such as the Crank Brothers Speedier Lever, I want to be careful not to damage the tube where the valve is attached. That's why in this video I start installation at the valve. If you want to see how to install the tire with the Speedier Lever starting opposite the valve see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJOykGNpp7Cshs0&ab_channel=TonyMarchand Note I finish close to one side of the valve, then move it around so that it come close to, but not over the valve. One can shake the tube and value up into the tire as one goes along (not shown in this video). Regards, Tony

I run a bike shop and have a couple tips to add. I sometimes use baby powder on the tube which allows the tube to move a little easier and I also sometimes will put a little on the tire itself which tends to help sometimes. There is also a great tool made by kool stop called the kool tire bead jack. I bought one on amazon for 12 or so dollars and it is really great at getting difficult tires on. Just need to make sure to use the tool properly so as not to damage the thread casing of tires.
@tony10speed7 жыл бұрын
Very good point. Baby powder is a great help and I should have mentioned it in the video. I personally use it on all new tubes and describe it's use when packing spare tubes. As an aside, starting tube installation at the valve is debatable. It works for me on stiff tires. Some prefer starting installation opposite the valve which is what Jim Langley suggests. I do have a Kool Tire Bead Jack and will compare it to the Crank Brothers Speedier Lever (will make a nice up coming video). Thanks for your comments.

Tony, great stuff, thank you! How do you decide if you should start or end at the valve? I've seen videos you've done showing both ways. Thanks.
@tony10speed3 жыл бұрын
For the most part, start opposite the valve such that you can intermittently shake the tire bead to the center well of the rim (giving you more room). As you work around toward the valve, you can push the valve up into the tire for even more room. I know a few of my videos start at the valve, but I rarely do that now. When using a tool such as the Crank Brothers Speedier Lever, Kool Tire Lever and EZclincher, one must take care as you approach the valve (that's why some start inserting the bead at the valve first with these tools). However, even with use of these tire installation tools, if you start away from the valve and work your way around FROM EITHER SIDE of the valve, as you get close you can get the bead to snap over the rim without the tool passing over the valve where it may cause damage. I hope that brings some clarification to the issue. Let me know if you have other questions. Regards and safe cycling, Tony

Nice going. Some tire/wheel combinations are just difficult. I have a Victoria rim that's extremely difficult to mount any tire. But my Bontrager rim is do-able and my Mavic rim is a breeze with my Gatorskin tire. Tubeless are a whole 'nother issue. Somehow, wheel manufacturers and bike stores never address the issue of tire/rim combinations in terms of the difficulty in replacing tires or fixing flats. That Pedro's tyre lever looks a lot like my Decathlon ones (or is it the other way round?) but mine only cost 2.50 GBP.
@tony10speed2 жыл бұрын
They're very close but some slight differences. I think that the Pedro Levers are a little more sturdy and a bit heavier. Never broke a Pedro tire lever but have snapped many others. In the USA, the cost of the Pedro and Decathlon are the same. Regards, Tony

The combination of a new tire and arthritic hands was keeping me from getting the tire back on after a tube installation. I finally put a zip tie around the rim and each portion of the tire that was seated. That did the trick. It allowed me to use both hands and get the tire on. Maybe this can help someone else
@tony10speed5 ай бұрын
Zip ties are a great idea for mounting difficult tires. We show that trick in one of our videos using a pedal strap but a zip tie should work fine: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJSWg5h8aclsd5Y Regards and safe cycling, Tony

Did you already have one bead in or do both at one time? Didn’t really mention and it’s hard to see
@tony10speed Жыл бұрын
I had one bead already on and was trying to fit the second bead. If you have a difficult time getting the first bead on, before you install the tube, you can carefully use a tire lever to help install the first bead. Then put the tube in and work on the second bead. I mention "careful" so as not to scratch or damage the rim with the tire lever, especially with carbon fiber wheels. Hope that answers your question.

Putting the bead in the center when putting the tire back on! That tip saved my morning! Thanks!
@tony10speed5 жыл бұрын
One of the more important tricks I've learned also. Most now suggest STARTING AWAY FROM THE VALVE AND WORKING YOUR WAY AROUND TOWARD THE VALVE, stopping frequently to shake the bead toward the center. Make sure you let any residual air out of the tire. If you use the Crank Brothers Speedier lever follow these directions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJOykGNpp7Cshs0 Regards, Tony

I have bought all kinds of tire levers and believe it or not I have had the most success with a flathead screwdriver.. assuming I'm careful not to touch the tube. Every other tool is just too thick. I use metal levers in combo with a screwdriver. It's always a gamble on having a hole in the tube once it's all FINALLY back on and it's so frustrating. Calm patience and experience is key. Going to start using talcum powder I guess. Not sure how much more wear the bead of my tires can take. Also going to start seating at the valve. I've had to do this procedure many many times because my spoke nipples keep stripping from what I finally realized was a cheap metal combo spoke wrench.
@tony10speed4 жыл бұрын
“It never gets easier, you just go faster” Greg LeMond, former pro rider, three times the Tour de France champion and twice Road Race world champion I would worry about puncture of the tube with the screw driver as well as damaging the tire bead. I've had good success with the Pedro's Tire Levers. If you have to go through what you describe, you have the wrong combination of tire and rim. I would worry about having to change a flat while out on the road. I had the same problem with Continental Gatorskin Tires and Velocity Rims. I scrapped the Velocity Rims for Continental Open Pro. Still use the Continental Gatorskins (holds up to all kinds of road conditions and even large chunky gravel) but now have no problem fixing a flat or installing a new tire. There's always a combination that work easier and better, you just need to search the internet, ask your friends or bike shop and try. For installation: Sprinkle talc (baby powder) on ta slightly inflated tube and coat it by running your hand round the tube. Let air out but leave a little air remaining and place the tube in the wheel rim. Start opposite to the valve, placing the bead over the rim. As you continue with the bead, shake the tube up and into the rim and the tire beads toward the center of the rim (where the rim is slightly deeper and gives you more slack. When you get to a point about 6 inches to one side of the valve or the other side, let all the air completely out, continue shaking the tire toward the center. Then either using you hands or Crank Brother Speedier Lever, finish the bead. I install to one side of the tube valve so that the Speedier Lever does not pass by the valve and cause any valve damage. As for stripping the spoke nipple with your spoke wrench, you are probably using to large a spoke wrench. @@danthompson5797 Try thePark Tool Triple Spoke Wrench or the Lezyne 3-Way Spoke Wrench (from Amazon). Spoke wrenches are cheap and I have a box full of them to try on bike wheels that are brought to me for truing. From the above two, I can usually find one that will work. Note: Certain spokes and nipples (such as aero spokes and certain Shimano) require special spoke wrenches. Regards, Tony

Any tips on getting the tyre out if the centre channel once it's on? This worked perfect to get my tyre on but now it's stuck in the channel in places and when I pump up the tube the tyre is uneven due to this.
@tony10speed2 жыл бұрын
You need to work the bead back and forth. Sometimes you can use a tire lever under one bead and guide it under the lip of the rim. Take a look at this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnaWmWekoqmXhdE Let me know how you do. Regards, Tony
