Thanks again for all you do here, it is very much appreciated by many of us. I have just finished my height gauge...tonight...it was well worth the effort, I had no access to hardening steel for the scriber, and made mine from a 6mm thick piece of hss... perfect.

Yes, I like the videos a lot... I wonder that you picked up the name, "Tubalcain", from the Bible. Unless one is familiar with the Book, he or she has no idea who is Tubalcain... So, you must be a careful reader. I hope that you can share your testimony in the video if possible. It is rare to see Christians around in my country. I'm particularly interested in reasons why you believe. Anyway, thanks for the wonderful videos and bless you!

I have an import 12" height gauge that was given to me. The scriber and clamp were missing. I purchased a replacement scriber from Shars for around $14.00. I still need a clamp for it and I hope to get to it one day. All the best! Mike

Place a piece of stock of the same thickness on the other side of vice jaw to clamp your work. It keeps the vice from racking. I do it with my vices on the drill press and bandsaw when working with short pieces.

Again I'm amazed at the skill's that you show. Even thou I do not have this type of machinery that you use, I still enjoy watching you create something from metal. I expect we are close to the same age (43), raised up in the country. We did not have the kind of schooling that you teach as a teacher. All we learn to do was to either castrate a hog, or build a rabbit box. And you said that 1/64 was to small for you in reading, well 1/2 is for me. Old Toot (Alfred Jones)

I may be to late for this but you could put a 1/4" piece of brass on the inside radius to fit into the ruler slot shallow enough that it doesn't hit the ruler but will serve a dual purpose. To keep your thumbscrew lined up properly on the flat area and also as a pointer that will put the brass close enough to the ruler that old eyes can read it without to much strain. Just a thought. :-)

Mr Pete project idea Looking at your wiggler i thought a laser would be cool Pick up a rifle bullet laser sighter Take some 1/2” stock bore to fit the bullet but not all the way through then the last part put a final small hole may be .015 or as small as possible thru end Put the bullet laser in the 1/2” stock Laser point the center punch What do you think

Lyle You ca by economy 1-2-3 blocks (pair) for around $15, and use one of those at a cost less than the raw metal from hobby metals. Would think it would make a great base for this project John

Fun project...Looks like another one I'll have to try. Just for a quick question, Why is the scriber, the clamp, and the round holder, made up of three parts?? It just seems that there would be more room for error, with so many parts that could come loose. Have fun!!!!!

Why would you tap the steel base for a coarse thread and the aluminum slide for a fine thread? My understanding is that for a given nominal size a fine thread bolt is stronger due to how much material is left after cutting the threads, but a coarse thread has more surface area and less likely to pull the threads out of the aluminum.

clean up your surface plate and polish/lap all the pieces so they are shiny, its amusing how it looks. It reminds me of the '4th dimension' episode in the simpsons where homer finds another dimension behind his closet because its so geometric.. its quite aesthetically appealing (you only can have simple shapes on the surface plate, it almost feels like there is a traffic jam in the city lol, I have been lapping for too long even my momma thinks my mind is gone

According to the current Starrett catalog, Catalog 33, page 288...."All of our precision steel rules are photo-engraved." And "All rules are photo-engraved and tempered for long life and flexibility." Catalog 26 from 1938 states that their rules were "machine divided" using new graduating machines of Mr. Starrett's own design.
