Mr. Jananayake, Absolutely brilliant episode, covering so many vital issues. After living in Sri Lanka for 32 years, I left for the US. Now at age 72, I went to SL last January and visited Horton Plains for the first time. What a magnificent experience. I am sorry I did not visit Horton Plains National Park in my youth. But, never too late. You were spot on, about the government bureaucracy with two ministries managing the National Park with conflicting interests. You correctly said, Horton Plains is a national treasure, and it is not for everyone - to visit as a picnic spot! I don't mean to be elitist, but, I saw, large crowds with food and drinks walking all over the areas, including the prohibited areas with no respect for signs and notices. Cutting access to the Plains from Ohiya and making visitors walk a long way is essential. You are right, people who care, tourists or locals, will right four or five miles, because, they care about the sanctity of the National Park. Also, your point about stepping on the plains outside of the pathway kills plants and insects, unique to the plains. Feeding wildlife is another infraction by the visitors. I witnessed, visitors arguing with the guards about food, and plastic items being repacked. Finally, a good point about our people, viewing everything from a political angle. You are doing a good job, covering these vital topics to your students who came to learn biology from you. I, as a teacher myself, think you are teaching life lessons - with some good humor thrown in. Keep up the good work.
