My titan 440i had only been serviced not too long ago, it started to lose pressure more and more as time went by and then wouldn't hold any pressure so I decided to fix it myself. According to your video and looking at the genuine parts I discovered the lower packing was different and there were 2 missing washers in my sprayer, whoever serviced it did a crappy job. Im so glad I did it properly myself watching your video step by step. I ordered the Titan packing kit, had to wipe off the old black grease and put fresh grease on everything, installed the 2 washers that were missing and the beaten up ball baring. Now it works perfect. Thank you very much for posting this video, you saved me money and now I can change the packing in less than 2 hours myself.

Graham Spencer I am glad that I was able to help you out. I will make one suggestion. If the lower ball was damaged, this could mean that your carbide ball seat is damaged. If in time, you have a pressure issue, check the lower ball for damage. If the ball is damaged, then the seat should be flipped over or replaced. The carbide seat is the thick "washer" that the ball sit on.

F Chordas My sprayer sat idle for two years and would not pump even though it is immaculate inside and out. I think that the ball was stuck in the cage inside the piston. Anyway this video allowed me to dismantle and re assemble the fluid section and now it works. Saved me the cost of sending it to a repair shop.

Excellent instructional video! You definitely know your stuff. The only issue I had was putting the piston back in. My vice wasn't wide enough and my ballpein hammer and wooden block didn't work (the wood started cracking). I finally got it when I used a 3 lb. hammer with a 1" diameter dowel rod...went right in.

This guy did a great job explaning this,, But learn how to do this yourself Painters , Sherwin Williams will not take the time of cleaning the inside of the areas that need packed, I don't mean the outside, SW charge 300 bucks to do this simple job, But they will never clean it like YOU will , it takes them 20 minutes for this job, thats nice money and SW wants as many rigs to come in for this service... SW does bare minnium and ship it out the door, This was great video explaining this DIY , The paint is expensive enough, You can do this.. I learned the hard way before youtube. : )

I recently repacked my 440 thanks to your video, then I ran about 10 gallons through it, then I removed the fluid section from the machine (had to fit equipment for a cabinet job into my Camry- 1800 miles each way), and didn't reassemble for about 60 days. After reassembly the pump wouldn't suck up any paint through the siphon tube. None. I removed the siphon tube, and one of the two o-rings on the tube had been destroyed when I had reassembled it. I replaced both o-rigs with OEM o-rings. Now the pump was able to suck up a small amount of paint, but it was only a very small amount of paint coming through the prime hose. Then I poured paint into the suction hose (probably about a 1/2 cup or so) and then the pump did push paint through the prime tube, and also the spray hose outlet nipple (I didn't have a spay hose attached). There was no paint on the piston, or anywhere else noticeable on the fluid section. None of the hoses are clogged. The o-ring on the foot valve that the pusher stem slides on to is good. The transducer is plugged in like it should be. I also blew compressed air through the prime hose to see if the prime valve was opening and closing like it should be. It was. What should be the next thing that I should look at?
@Brian_the_repair_guy
@Brian_the_repair_guy 4 жыл бұрын
First, use water when trying to figure out a problem. A lot less messy to deal with. Second, when you fill the suction hose, the material flowed through the outlet nipple and out the prime valve? If yes, then put a hose and gun on the machine. Set it up as if you are going to flush it with water. Fill the suction hose again, then drop it in the water bucket. Open prime valve, turn machine on. Once you see water come from the prime hose for about 10 seconds, turn prime valve off and see if it builds pressure.

@@jeffhaman9010 if everything was working good, then just stopped building pressure, most likely the upper or lower ball is stuck, or has a piece of trash stuck in it. Make sure the lower ball is free. Then check the upper ball. Do not remove the piston, just remove the ball retainer and seat. Remove the ball and make sure nothing is in the piston. Then reassemble.
@jeffhaman9010
@jeffhaman9010 4 жыл бұрын
Upper ball was stuck. Also, the piston had started to wear the lip on the lower part of the lower packing, and there was a piece of it hanging out in the foot valve area. It looked like part of a teflon o-ring or something, and I thought "oh crap, I did a bad job when I repacked it." Actually the upper ball was stuck, and the cage that it sat in had started to fail. I thought I took your advise and had ordered a Bedford repack kit (in January), but when it arrived in the mail, it wasn't labeled Bedford, it wasn't labeled with anything. It had shipped from MN, so I have no idea what it was. That kit included a plastic ball cage, and I used it, but thankfully I held on the the OEM metal composite ball cage. Thanks Brian for your help!

Can you check the packings without replacing if they still look good? I had left insides of my sprayer not protected over a couple of winters and that resulted in the large ball rusting and pitting along with the foot valve housing that was badly rusted... The packings looked perfect, this is a unit that rarely gets used and prob has a total of 25 hours on it, if that... Does Bedford sell all these parts for the 440i? Also, what type of grease are you using for assembly?
@Brian_the_repair_guy
@Brian_the_repair_guy Ай бұрын
@@fraydcat any kind of grease is good. The packing will come with grease if you get them. To check the packing, prime it. Once the system stops pumping under pressure, it should hold for 30 seconds before another stroke. It may stroke right after the prime valve is turned off a couple cycles but wait. If the pumping stops, packing are good. If it keeps stroking packing are bad

Thanks for making this video. I just finished repacking the fluid section, but the machine still won't prime or even take up any water out of the bucket. I didn't replace the piston, could this be causing no uptake through the suction hose? I also haven't replaced the prime valve. I ran out of product the other day and the machine started sucking air, so I got down the ladder and turned it off like I normally would. This time it wouldn't take anything up after that.
@Brian_the_repair_guy
@Brian_the_repair_guy 3 жыл бұрын
The piston has to be smooth with no damage. Before you do anything remove the pickup hose from the U shape tube. Lower this section in to a small pail with water. Start the machine and see if it will prime from there.
@fromthenorthwest
@fromthenorthwest 3 жыл бұрын
Good idea, why didn't I think of that. It sucked up water fine without the section assembly on. I reattached the suction assembly and it worked for a while. But has stopped working again. There was also some water leaking out from where it goes into the foot valve. Start hearing a couple loud knocking sounds inside the machine too, that can't be good. I'm a couple hours away from the closest Titan certified shop, but I may try to find one in town here. Thanks for all the help

The packing kit is Titan 704-586. The bevels help with insertion so the packing is not damaged during insertion of packing or the piston. Make sure the inside lips of the upper packing are pointing down and the lower packing lips point up. Do not use any packing kit other than Titan or you can use Bedford aftermarket kits as well

For all your digging on Chinese parts 440s are made in China like most other Titan. I like Graco but TriTech makes the best pumps, no comparison between a 440 and a TriTech T4 night and day difference in quality.
@Brian_the_repair_guy
@Brian_the_repair_guy 4 жыл бұрын
My "digging on Chinese parts" has never been directed at the manufacture of spray equipment. Is has always been directed at after market parts for service and repair. With that said, yes there was a time when a few, not like "most other Titans" as you stated, were produced in China. The 400, 440, 540, 640 were produced in China for a short time. Titan found that production did NOT meet their quality control or expectations of users and certified repair shops. They no longer produce or assemble their products in China. As with almost every manufacturer today, Titan does use parts that are manufactured outside the US to Titans specifications, but they are assembled in The US by Titan. I stand by my comment of Chinese junk in reference to service parts in the aftermarket. My videos are made to aid an owner in maintenance of their machines as closely to the manufacturers recommendations as possible. If someone chooses to play Russian roulette with Chinese junk, that is their choice.

@@Brian_the_repair_guy I agree. I stopped selling Titan years ago and don't really service them at all anymore, Sherwin sold them the pump so let them ship it off for service. TriTech and Graco are the only quality products I would consider. Hopefully we see more manufacturers return to USA in the next decades! Btw I don't have complete sales numbers but I would wager models 440-640 are in the neighborhood of 75% of Titan sales

Chuck H thanks for the question, but I don't discuss pricing for labor and parts. The reason for this, every area is different. If I were to give a price, it would be based on the cost of living in this area. If you take that info to say, New York, where the COL is much higher, then the cost seems low. On the other hand, that cost would seem extremely high in an area with a much lower COL. What I will say is, I charge 1 hour labor plus parts on most machines. The labor increases to as much as 2 hours on larger or gas powered machines.

Randolph Mccray 704-297 or 560-038. One of these O rings need to be replaced in the filter base. If you have the large filter housing, approximately 2" in diameter use part 704-297. If you have the small filter housing, approximately a 1" diameter, use part 560-038. When you remove the housing check the very end. Make sure their is no scratches or scaring. That could be the cause and would require replacement. When installing the O ring, do not use sharp or metal tools. That could damage the O Ring. Make sure you take note to which groove the O ring comes from to ensure you install it in the correct one.

I’m about to take my 440i apart. It hasn’t been used much, is 6yrs old and I clean it very well each use (remove tower filter, gun head/filter and flush till perfectly clear) and I keep it oiled with TSL. I don’t use it very much since I Paint apartments and have a smaller rig I prefer (old Sherwin Spray Tech I think...label is wore off). I went to use the titan today and it won’t pull water. Removed intake tube and Ball is freely moving. Ugh. I never used the prime valve except during cleaning to assure a good flushing. I’m going to check that plastic cage bearing/ball. I’m guessing that’s the Achilles heel here.
@Brian_the_repair_guy
@Brian_the_repair_guy 6 жыл бұрын
Bob SoloMan usually when a machine sits for a long period the upper and lower ball will stick. You have already freed up the lower ball. The upper ball can be freed by removing the lower ball housing. Look up inside the fluid section and you will see a hexagonal hole in the piston. Easily slide a small screwdriver in the hole until you touch the ball. Then put pressure on the ball till the ball loosens. When you reattach the lower housing put a bit of water in it, then screw it on. Remove your pressure hose and try priming it up. Be aware when it primes is will spew water from the hose fitting. When you store the machine, pump RV antifreeze in the machine. This will help prevent this.

First of all you did no cleaning....that's part of the hourly rate you charge. You used crap packing, you had packing grease and you didn't grease the packings. 90 percent of the 440s I work on the filter is in backwards and you never took to filter off. Putting the piston through the packing without the piston guide on it is just dumb, How about do it the right way, that's what you are paid to do.

My hourly rate for repack does not include cleaning. The "crap" packings you mentioned are Bedford Precision. The only parts made outside of Titan and Graco that can be used without voiding g the warranty. I give my customers choice to be cost effective. I did infact use grease. At minute 27:20 I begin using grease from my bulk container. Putting the piston in without the guide is not hard, with mor experience you will find the taper on the shaft makes it easy. The video was about the repack, no other topics were discussed.

@Brian_the_repair_guy Bedford are crap packings......I saw you put grease on the rings of the packing not grease the inside of the packing. If you used OEM you would realize that.....as far as cleaning you are leaving all that junk inside the fluid section when you put it back together, that obvious. Cleaning should not be a option.... you are sherworks. I'm sure you charged a minimum of 1 hour to do 15 minutes of work........

@Brian_the_repair_guy as far as experience goes.....16 years of repair work is enough to know cleaning is not a option. Early on in my repair work I to did not use the piston guide and the edge of the piston ripped the upper packing....lesson learned.

@Brian_the_repair_guy and no you didn't talk about the filter but that is part of the packing process because if it's In Backwards that causes strain on fluid movement and wears the packins and piston faster.

@@mrchezze84 after 33 years of repair myself, I have heard many ways people do their own work. As stated, these videos are to show how the contractor can do a quick repair. Nothing more. I think you missed that statement in every video I make. I also state these videos are NOT a substitute for taking the machine to a certified shop. I would suggest you rewatch the video, most every comment you made is either answered or is moot. I appreciate you watching, but you are also free to ignore the videos.
