We are sooooo fortunate to have people like Leonard Lee (Veritas, Lee Valley Tools) and Tom Lie-Nielsen. Woodwork has once again become a joy with higher quality tools than we have ever had access to previously. I have had Record and Stanley planes over the years but they do not hold a candle to these new tools and they are fragile as well as imperfect. Nice to take a well made tool out of a box and put it to work right away. Oddly thanks to Ebay the old less effective planes are selling for almost as much as these new tools. Last 2 purchases I saved money buying the newer Veritas. Up here in Canada the Lie-Nielsen tools are almost double the cost of the Veritas so its an easy choice. Either way they are a great improvement and a pleasure to use. Its like having a Rolls Royce parked in your backyard.

Tom is a good boss. I live in Taiwan. Most of the company moved to China to cut down the labor cost, and later they have to fight with the Chinese. You can't beat their price. It's a smart move to stay in US and make quality products.

Awesome!! Got started in metalworking, by making my own tools for woodworking. Now I'm a full time metal worker/machinist. Got my first Lie-Nielsen plane at 12 yrs old I think. Still use it! Love it all the more after seeing the shop.

Great video! I visited Lie-Nielsen Toolworks several years ago and met Tom in the showroom. Although I was only able to purchase a low angle block plane, it is exceptional in workmanship. The company has a very large presence at woodworking shows, not only with their tools on display, but allowing woodworkers the opportunity to handle and try them out. Made in America!

Fantastic stuff. Great video, with top notch editing and presentation. I'm a huge fan of Lie-Nielsen. I'm new to woodworking and I'm slowing getting a collection together. The fact that it's American made is appreciated, and this is all the way from the UK. Heirloom quality through and through and it just so happens that the owner and his team come across as super down to Earth too.

England aye?. I started very young and then went to high school which the main tool brand at trade school was English Stanley and Record / Marples and the Boxford lathe. In 1990's Record shipped their whole vise foundery to China and their tools are made their now...that sux not to mention the Colchester lathe.

Well, technically, I did say the UK, but yes, it just so happens that I currently reside in England 😉 BUT, I’m not English! 😁 I may have a few Lie-Nielsen tools, but I started my woodworking tool collection with Record tools. I do have a few Stanley’s too, but my main ones are Record, which are really nice. And I absolutely agree that it’s a shame they aren’t made in the UK anymore, but sadly, that’s generally the case with a lot of brands that existed back then.

@@chm1701 if u can find a English made 6" Record quik release engineers vice, or wood work vice and Marples or Stanley chisels from the 1960's to early 80's era i reckon youll be made. Moore & wright of Sheffield, Eclipse are absolutely stunning premium engineers tools. That and Mitutoyo of japan only make one standard....(premium) and no budget.

Tyson I got to tell you I'm a woodworker a carpenter been one since 1979, in any case I've done a lot of really interesting projects I have had a very blessed life because of my skills and I am very familiar with lie Nielsen tools . I did not know that their facility was so beautiful I'm running out right now to Woodcraft and I'm going to buy a couple of Lee Nielsen planes just because ,I watch this video and not just that, the first video I saw of yours was because I'm interested in learning how to do CNC work on wood with that in mind your first video that I saw of you was the one where you talked about how you lost it all and how you prayed and how it all came back and your goals for the future and I've only been watching your videos for maybe three weeks and I really love your passion for life thank you Tony Tony's custom Construction

Most woodcrafts don't have LN planes. There was a dispute years ago about supply and WC has their own line of asian made planes, though some of the stores where the owners (not WC, but the store owners) had a good relationship with LN may still sell the planes. Most of their sales probably come through their website, and they travel around (or at least used to) and demonstrate their planes. LN's planes are exceptionally well made, but they're a little heavy if you're used to working with older tools. The weight detail is lost on most amateurs who only play with tools, but after a couple of hours of heavy use, you'll notice it.

keep em coming, Titan! I just got into cnc with fusion and my cnc shark hd4. it's truly am an answer to prayer! Was sick and tired of machine shops lead time and $$$$. it's awesome not having to wait or spend more $$$ to get prototypes built! My only regret is not doing it sooner.

Until you hold one of these tools in your hand you can't understand the beauty of what LN has done for Woodworkers..And until you use one, you won't understand what LN has accomplished in the hand tool woodworking arena. I often leave my workshop at night and just pick up and marvel at my number 62 before I say goodnight. These are tools of legend, something that when you die someone cleaning up your belongings who knows nothing about tools stops and pauses and appreciates what they have in their hand. We all as Woodworkers owe a debt of gratitude to Thomas for filling this gap for us and doing it all in the US. He's the founder/creator of the hand tool renaissance, but more importantly a prime example the Made in the USA renaissance is real and possible and incredibly rewarding to US citizens. The tools are expensive, but I never think twice about it, they're worth every penny for many reason beyond the jobs we accomplish with them.

Too often these days manufacturers are making disposable tools, these tools are heirlooms which will give great life long service. It's fabulous that someone still has the old values. For me it started when I first bought my engineers chest when I was an apprentice

Lie Nelson tools are gorgeous and so are the prices. Lie is correct about the hand planes about smoothing the edges and making the bottoms flat, If you buy a hand plane from most manufactures they are sharp edges and dished bottoms. You have to spend a little bit of time shaping them up for precision work like cabinet making.

Those may or may not be good. particle M4 and LV's V11 are probably what you're looking for. I just tested (and will publish) the V11 and 6 other irons and the particle metal irons that aren't super high vanadium carbide type (e.g., not 10V or anything like that) do very well. Large mix of carbides and powder, or heavy on chromium carbides and some other and lighter on the V is nice (PM M4 has a fair amount of vanadium in it, i guess). Lots of vanadium makes the irons very wear resistant, but it doesn't seem to provide quite as much benefit in wood as it must in metal or high wear industrial parts.

Watch that large plane wobble back and forth as he pushes it on the wood. Thats not good. Better off using a power jointer with carbide tipped knives. Much faster and more efficient. Not saying these are not good tools but they are mostly for retired guys who have all the time in the world or for old style furniture makers so they can say they did it all by hand.

guys ask me regularly why i pay more for lie nielsen planes . Its pretty simple , i prefer supporting an AMERICAN Manufacturer that makes a Quality Product . Thats why i don't buy wood river , or veritas junk , their made in China , and i don't give a damn about supporting China , Mexico , Canada , or any other foreign country when it comes to my Handtools . The only foreign made ones ive bought are Henry Taylor , Robt Sorby , Marples , or Original Stanley tools made in the U.S. , or England .
