Titanfall 2: DLC Animation

For every pilot, there's a tick...
This reel includes a bunch of the animations that I did for Titanfall 2 during the DLC period. I got to work mostly on character scripted stuff such as the faction leaders and the animations for the coliseum aftermath. I also got a chance to do some titan animation with the Northstar execution which was a blast to work on :)
Posing and staging the characters or scene is the starting point. Here the animator tries to figure out the beats needed to effectively sell the moment. After the animator is happy with the staging/blocking pass we shoot some stuff with motion capture.
MoCap then serves as the base for realistic human animation. From there, hand key animation is added to clean and polish the performance. Some stuff here is completely keyframed. But it's usually a mix.

It depends on score. If it ends 0-3 you will feel bad and he’ll them up. If there is 1-3 your pilot will shake their hand or the enemy will salute you. 2-3 is when your pilot acts toxic and kicks the enemy because of how hard it was for you to defeat the other pilot

Your work on Davis and Droz's animations really brought the characters to life in the game. Their openings are a big reason why they're my favorite faction. My personal favorite action in this reel is the coliseum handshake. I'm a competitive dude, and I can get frustrated when someone stomps me in Coliseum, but the more wholesome victory animations that I can sometimes get are great at relieving my anger by reminding me that it is all just a game, both in-game and in real life.

Aaron Goh reference is as essential as the computer itself so yes of course I used reference. Video reference to understand the mood and mechanics. Once I'm happy with the staging and blocking pass for both characters which was tricky in such a small space we move onto MoCap. From there we get the best take and bring it to Maya where I will clean and polish the animations to make sure everything is working as intended.

TehFocus mocas is usually the base for most realistic human animation. Hand key animation is added to clean and polish. In some cases it's entirely done from scratch. For the amount that a game requieres, MoCap Is absolutely needed

Intel GPA can extract them I believe. This version of Source differs too much from the one that Valve uses, VTF and VMT files have their own encryption along with the actual models, but it is still possible to extract them. Facepunch users have already figured a few ways to do so

Yoni Reicher motion captures usually serves as the base for realistic human animation. For the amount of animation that goes into a game it's absolutely necessary. Hand key animation is added afterwards to clean and polish and in some cases to animate entirely.
