I'm no gun expert, but I'm pretty comfortable with them. I did 12 years in the Army Infantry, and to answer the question at the end of the video, endurance is where that lower weight will come into play. Six plus hour patrols, you'd be so happy to have the OIP. I saw a lot of guys buy a ton of cool guy shit for their rifles, then after the first one or two patrols in Afghanistan, that shit sat in a tough box haha. Awesome video, awesome rifles.

There’s several things I don’t like about nutnfancy’s channel, but one of the things I always enjoyed were the sections where he’s running and gunning, with multiple targets set up in lots of different positions that forced the shooter to move between them.

Competive shooting is more like combat which shows better difference between guns. Targets are moving not stationary which also includes carrying more ammo and reloads. Interested in seeing stamina for a average person, not a everyday gym rat, doing similar situation.

I remember a veteran talking about having to clear apartment buildings room by room. When doing that much all at once he (and those with him) learned what their gun holding stamina was as their technique decayed. Doing continuous room clearing drills for a couple hours would certainly test the difference between these two guns. For example start with a good c-clamp technique and your time is when you first touch the magwell, longest time wins.

Exactly! These tests were fun but not really showing the importance of a light and nimble rifle. When holding security or active clearing you WILL compromise on your grip over time. Personally as a wimpy civilian lol I get tired holding my 16" LPVO AR pretty quickly on range days where I'm actually running drills. If you're actually doing something where you need to be at ready for 30+ minutes the weight (and balance) of you're rifle will guaranteed effect how high you'll end up holding it. If you've ever paintballed you'll know this pain, and that's weight you can hold close to your body.

@@il9861 I have shot with both. I actually had a RMR on a battle arms receiver set with a SLR rail for a build very similar to this one (with a 14.5). I ended up selling that gun eventually, but my 16 inch Noveske with an EOTech is MUCH easier to get rounds on target with. I'm not saying that objectively proves target acquisition is better with an EOTech reticle, but it sure as hell was a lot faster. For me at least.

The RMR is small for a reason, it was developed for handguns. It does its job very well, but its not a good rifle optic by any stretch of the imagination compared to dedicated rifle optics.

Definitely think it was a strange choice to use different optics for a comparison vid like this, I feel like the optics contribute a lot more towards rapid target acquisition than weight does, and target aquisition is half of what makes a good timed run.

target acquisition is also a VERY personal thing. Regardless of the sight you have equipped on the gun. The persons eyesight comes into play more than the actual brand of sight does. If a person is extremely Far/Near sighted, a sight wont help them much at all. They need glasses.

I think, with experience in both types of sights, Matt you work better with the reflex sights. The reflex will point with your eyeline/angle of attack whereas the holo will maintain the direction of your barrel. You've always said you're an iron sights lover and the reflex will work more like that. I think that gave you a slight advantage over the other guy but that's conjecture.

The best factor with weight is everything that leads up to firing it. Like the hiking, running, the holding an angle for 10 mins above your head (aiming up stairs on at a rooftop) and the amount of weight around your neck such as your full kit with 6 mags.

I think the reason for the difference in the result with the MK18 and the OIP comes down to the recoil getting reduced because of the extra weight and the time needed to compensate for that.

I think that putting the xps on both would make a much bigger difference in target acquisition. I know I chase the dot a lot on red dots like an rmr

A good test would be to have a progressively longer aim down sight test. Aim down sight with the lighter rifle for 1 minute, then 5 minutes, then 10 and then compare your accuracy with a grouping after that, given that the rifles themselves are similarly accurate. That is the best test I can think of unless you REALLY wanna run a mile or two in the Texas heat.

I think a transition drill with a bare muzzle (no device at all) will show the biggest difference. Transitions are where the light guns shine as there is less mass. A horizontal plate rack or a long string of silhouettes

I think you should test the run times more than the average shoot time. As the weight slows down the movement. Your accuracy is effected by the weight as fast as your movement would be in my opinion

Tho I wonder if a heavier gun is easier to stabilize and keep steady than a light gun. If its too light and doesnt require some force to put against it, then precisely holding it might be diffiuclt. Especially when recoil comes into it. Then again, this "light" AR15 might be heavy enough for that not to be an issue.

When you are talking about weight, your biggest judge will be arm endurance. On an overall scale in mass it weighs nothing compared to a ruck or yourself. Quick maneuvering between targets or prolonged posture while firing will determine the difference.

I'm curious about rapid fire accuracy between the light and heavy versions. Will the lighter bolt increase fire rate? With it not being as heavy is it as accurate? I feel the light one would shine in a CQB setup. Even more than it is currently anyhow lol

Longer, thinner barrels are generally less accurate. A short heavy barrel is the most accurate. Lighter bolt and buffer increases bolt speed which would increase fire rate, also tries to rip the rim off the case during extraction in my experience. With a lightened bolt and buffer you need a lighter recoil spring and adjustable gas block to make it work without destroying itself. Mine's 4.2 lbs and isn't a pistol or SBR

I wonder how much the different sights affected your times. I feel like for the actual shooting with both hands and rifle shouldered, the heavier gun is going to be a little better. Maybe the lighter gun would help if you're fully kitted out and trying to shave weight for a full/multi day hike.
