Good morning Jody; Titanium is HOT Stuff. Yet not new. I got a history lesson, by accident. I had always wondered how the tiny wing and one piece flying elevator and rudder on the Lockheed F 104 Starfighter designed by legendary Aerospace engineer Kelly Johnson was so strong, a CAD stress post a few years ago told me why all main Spars Ribs and stringers 100% Titanium. This so good the 1950 to 1980 produced , F 104 Starfighter now making money at Starfighters Aerospace, Cape Kennedy Florida. Yes, still flying past 1,400 KTS and can easily zoom to 100,000 feet . As you had mentioned on the first titanium welding video, motorsports is a big user. I think a move is on to utilize Titanium more, the trend of every kit plane is all carbon fiber, yet so stiff and brittle, so old school metal fabrication and use of titanium components inside the wing will become the new normal. Motorcycle design the tube trellis frame is strong yet heavy using high strength steel alloy tube, I can see this also being done with titanium tube, of course will be in factory team supersport track only motorcycles, yet with it being first on race day will soon be wanted by the general motorcycle riding public. One other is designs of systems to reuse spent nuclear rod assemblies, and that equipment uses titanium.. I do think, any welder new to the biz or been lighting up the metal for sometime will need to get certified on titanium, at least you see it commin around the corner. It's funny you mentioned "hold still while post flowing....". Just recently I failed an X-ray of an orbital tube weld that I had tig tacked, and after I trailed off the amperage at the end of the tack I lifted my hood and was talking to a buddy while letting the gas post flow....well I wasn't still enough and inadvertently rested my tungsten on the tack while everything was still cooling, tungsten stuck and broke off a piece about .005"...failed X-ray for tungsten inclusion on a piece of flight hardware on a NASA rocket...😞 Won't do that again..lol 😬

I’m an aerospace welder Jody I weld titanium all day have take those exact tests you are showing . You need to back off your back purge to where it’s just barely flowing and you won’t have any color .

Jody, I get that this is test welding with optimum conditions with the back purge, but what do you do when you're welding a part where you can't purge? Although I don't have the equipment to weld as you do, I find these videos extremely educational.

Well, for a full penetration titanium weld where the back side is molten, not purging will produce a brittle weld that will fail with very little stress. But for other materials like stainless steels, It really depends on the specific application. for example, parts like stainless headers are sometimes repaired without using a a purge and that might be ok sometimes, depending on the joint type. But something like sanitary stainless tube with food product or pharmaceutical products running thru it really must be purged. hope this helps

I have read some books about titanium being mig welded inside an inert gas chamber but nope, I have, never been involved with application where titanium is mig welded. There is a fairly new process called TIP TIG that seems to show some promise for titanium

@@weldingtipsandtricks it's definitely a crazy process. My work might be the only place in the world that actually uses MiG for it. It definitely changes the game when you need to lay down inches of fill.
