By far the most informative and clear-cut video I've ever seen on planer fishing. I'm a veteran salt water fisherman including inline planer fishing, but have never used a cleated planer. I'm visual and had to see it done. Man you really laid it out perfectly. Thanks so much!

Good video on planers. I have been fishing for over 50 years and a Master Operator Captain for 40 years, but did know about the last method that is very simple & easy way to troll a planer. I especially like the fact it can be used with spinning equipment, that is way sportier way to catch fish than conventional gear. Good luck with your channel, wish it was available when I was younger. Capt. Bill

I'm in Queensland Australia and I fish for Spanish Mackeral ( King Mackeral to Americans ) I only use spin gear now, a Shimano Sedona 4000 reel and 6 foot Daiawa Aird rod with 30lb braid to 60lb mono leader, it's the most fun way to fish now with plenty of huge fish caught on such light gear

I consider myself a beginner/intermediate level offshore fisherman - recently I went out with an expert buddy who was running skirted ballyhoo on planers and we crushed mahi with it. I tried to get him to explain it (he used technique #3) but I couldn't quite grasp what he meant. This video not only explains PERFECTLY what he did, but two other methods I wasn't aware of. Excellent video man, subscribed! Tight lines from Hawaii 🤙🏽

Really good info Scott, and well put across. Been a charter skipper for 30 years, but haven’t used planers until recently, as a replacement for a downrigger. I would encourage the use of a leader wheel that allows for clipping on your lure before feeding it out by hand, as 3 times, I have seen a fish grab a lure fed out that way, before being attached, during a hot bite and it was bye bye lure. Keep up the good work and good luck with your chanel

Hey Scott. Great video! I was using the planer bridal method for awhile and it works fine, but eventually switched to the 3rd method (rubber band). Two reasons: 1st, sometimes the bridal swivels would get jammed up in the smaller roller guides on my trolling rods and I would have to "shake" the rod or pull them through by hand sometimes at critical moments. 2nd, I fish alone a lot and so not having to set the rod down and take off the planer, is just easier. I haven't tried the 1st hand lining method yet...maybe next time! Thanks for making it look so easy!
@chriswhitlock5097
@chriswhitlock5097 3 жыл бұрын
Also...3rd reason, in south FL the weeds get pretty thick in the summer. It's not a problem for the planer, but it pulls even harder on the "already stressed" rod/reel. Tied off to a cleat it's not an issue at all since I use 400lb mono outrigger line (but I do pull it up to clean it off every now and then).

I'm new to saltwater fishing and I've never seen method three before. Very interesting! If you put a sliding rig on the main line and put the rubber band between the planer line and the sliding rig maybe you wouldn't have to worry about excess line between the rod and the planner? If the pressure of the water is strong enough to push the slider down to the planer it seems like it could work. Then you could adjust the distance the bait is from the boat by letting out more line. I don't know but its a thought! Thanks for the new info!!!

@drpando 2 жыл бұрын
Hi - I'm new to planers - and I just barely understand how Scott's 3rd system works to begin with, but it seems your idea of a sliding ring does add the adjustability component that Scott's rubber band method is missing. I think i need to see this (I'm a visual-based learner). Any chance you can forward an image of your idea? I'm in Eastern time zone (Florida).

Helps me out a lot on the “slaughter” style rig off the cleat. I read about that on Reddit but really helps to see it in a video. Thanks a lot for posting. Have you heard of anyone using this method in conjunction with outriggers? Might be cool if you could get 4 lines out by spreading them with the outrigger. Might be too much force from the planar ans also Little technical to pull the planar line over alongside the boat to clip in. But if you could might be a neat spread tactic. I think I’ll try it next time I’m in the boat.

Ok, serious question. have you ever tried running 100' of 50lb mono leader back on your cleet tied off #6 stationary planner and put a Xrap #30 Rapala mag Diver on it Then, used a 65# rubber bands method with say a 6" squid feathers and a octopus hoochie or a 9" Iillander and Bonita strips ran back say 75'? Its really utilizing 2 lures on one setup. The down fall is, if the Mag Rapala gets hit, it's usually a larger fish, down 40+ feet that must be hand lined in. BUT, it's effective. I believe the mix in presentation with 2 lures being ran fairly close together creates a wider and irresistible mix of bait. Love to hear your thoughts. Also, I finally got my planner bridal'sl length and correct double swivel dialed in. Now I prefer removing the planner. And just enjoy fighting the fish with zero hardware attached.

I thought a bridle system was the only way to allow for a quick release reel-in leader system, but this SEPARATE cleat-mounted system takes the cigar!!!!!! Thank you! Now if I could just figure out all the knots you used to tie all this stuff together..... Can you fish a lipped or lipless crankbait with a planer board? How much line should you let out between the planer board and the lure? Does the more line being let out between the planer board and the lure make the lure dive deeper? Also, does trolling faster make the lure dive deeper as well? Thanks for your excellent demonstration about planer boards, I have wondered for years how it work and I haven't a clue until I saw your video!

Yes you can troll diving plugs off of a planer. It’s a real good method for trolling for grouper and is done a lot. How deep it really goes will depend on several factors but if the lure is designed to dive 30ft it will be 30ft below the planer. I would run 100’ off of the planer board

Question: I just tired your hand lined planar and had issues with setting out the mainline. The planar has 100 feet. It's not clear in your video if I should send out the main line at the proper length (100 ft) and then connect it to the planar by the rubber band? I may be missing it but once you connect the rubber band to the mail line it's not sliding down the planar line to the bead at the end of the planar.

Scott have you ever used a bridle that has the double snap swivels on each end with the outer most snap on each end is cut so it's only a hook that hooks into the spro swivels that attach to the main line and the leader?

i really liked your video. I am totally new to planer fishing and you really helped with your video. Only question is you were mentioning about various sizes of planer so if you can, can you explain more on the relationship between boat speed / planer size / trolling line lbs / leader line lbs etc. Thanks.

Typically the heavier the planer board the deeper it will swim. Line diameter, boat speed and distance from the boat also have an effect

Will the Squal 30 work planer fishing? Would the rod the Squal 50 comes with along a bridle to pass through the guides? Will the guides be ok for using braid? Would you think the Squal two speed reels would work? Thanks for the video and sharing.
@ScottBonnerOutdoors
@ScottBonnerOutdoors Жыл бұрын
The two speed squalls are actually very good. Planer fishing is best using heavy gear. Going too light puts too much stress on the rod and reel

When making the bridle itself are you better using crimps or knots to create your loops? It would seem over time that the crimps bearing into your braid would fray it? Also, what is your method for attaching the mainline and leader to the bridle? Thanks!

Great Post..THANKS! I had my first go with two #3 planers yesterday on the northside of St thomas, VI. No bridals. Both got SO FOULED...watched another video and the guy said he never runs 2 planers at the same time for just this reason...Had to learn the hard way! First time in years there's a ton of seaweed just offshore in 145ft of water. Re rigged no planers... with a blue and white 4oz. sea witch wired up with a ballyhoo...BOOM small 4 lb. Mahi. Next time I'll try your long leader on a hand spool Scott... But my question is this once the fish is on the hook and when the planer hits the rod tip and your start hand lining the leader onto the big spool..you say just let the line drop back in the water till you get your fish in the boat?..Why does the thought of 100ft of 150lb mono in the water anywhere near the prop scare the hell out of me. Thanks again for taking the time to do this video.

Thanks for such a detailed comment I love reading these. As long as the boat is still in gear the line will be perfectly fine. I will say however that if there’s a big crosswind it’s much harder and more risky but I’ve personally never had a problem

Great job on the explanation of these tactics. I just purchased two 30 wide conventional reels and they have 40 lb mono on them. I was contemplating adding the 80 lb braid for in line planer fishing but seeing the 3rd example really allows the use of any rod which is a much better option. Should I add the braid to those 30 wides? I fish braid on all of my spinning reels but not sure why everyone is going braid on trolling outfits as an extensive long shock wind on leader needs to go on anyway. I want to stay as versatile as possible on those 30s. Much appreciated and wish you all the best. Tight lines from The Florida Keys.

@ScottBonnerOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Anthony Polizze I would leave your 30 wides as they are and try the cleated planer option first. If you find that you prefer the in line planer methods better then yes you will have to add 80lb braid. Leaving the 40lb mono is the best option if you can do that

Great methods... I just would like to share a method it is used in my country ... we use the red color Yo-Zuri board that comes in different sizes for different depths. Once you catch a fish it will flip and comes to the surface. The main line is attached to a bungee rope hooked to the cleat. Once the bungee stretches, we know there is fish hooked.

@@ScottBonnerOutdoors I cut strips from tire inner tubes about 1"x12" to 16". Tie the planer line on each end of the rubber with several inches of slack drooping between the two ends. When the fish hits the rubber stretches and the slack disappears. I've used technique #1 for ages but interested in #3. Reel folks say don't used over a #3 planer in technique #1 but with technique #3 I can use larger planers.

Is planer fishing ONLY for offshore or can it be used in any form inshore like around pine island sound and what kind of fish? Thanks for an excellent video.

It can be used for both inshore and offshore but it's typically an offshore method. Anytime you need your baits to be below the surface a planer will get you there

Excellent Video again!! I have ne question tho:: So I have 100lb Power Pro 8-strand braid attached to a 200lb bridle for the Planer onto 100ft of 100lb monofilament leader (didn't have 60lb) onto 10ft of 60lb fluorocarbon which attaches to the lure. The Question is, would it be advisable to attach a snap on swivel at the end of the 100ft of 100lb fluorocarbon leader to connect to the fluorocarbon and lure?? Reason being that it would be easier to switch the lures; you can have your lures rigged onto 10ft of Fluorocarbon, neatly wrapped and stored in a bag. In this way you do not have to cut the mono leader and tie on a new lure everytime you wanna switch the lures.
@ScottBonnerOutdoors
@ScottBonnerOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
That would work perfectly fine and I do it a lot for trolling for easy lure changes. I do prefer to use the least amount of terminal tackle as possible close to the lure or bait though. 10 feet should be plenty

I noticed when you use the 3rd method you used a spin cast reel. What setup do you use when using a spinning reel? Can you or have you tried bending the planer to steer out away from the center to move the line away from the motors? Thanks again for sharing
@ScottBonnerOutdoors

I use a spinning real using the third method because I prefer using spinning reels any chance I can. If you’re using a rod to pull the planet itself you must use conventional
