I just finished watching this video. I can only say one thing... Mr. Chris, you have taken the education level to a whole other level... Most of us as a milling machine operators don't know much about these super machines.... Thank you and I hope to see more of these videos here... to be Honest despite my poor English... I can always understand your very clear explanation... and i know the secret is because you are so sincere in your love for spreading knowledge.... Thank you are all TITANS OF CNC BOOM 💥

I run these and I there’s a legend of a man who’s like the king of them, he’s 65 and has been grinding for 47. Studer has offered him jobs. Amazing because he grinds way different that any video I’ve seen

Greetings from germany 🤘 Very good demonstration and explanation. My profession is called: Schneidwerkzeugmechaniker Schwerpunkt Schneidwerkzeug- und Schleiftechnik (Cutting Tools Mechanic - Main Focus - Cutting Tool & Grinding Technology) I've learned manual, nc and cnc grinding for milling & turning tools (and a lot more) of metal, wood and plastic. It's nice to see same techniques at the same quality on the other side of the ocean 😁 Keep going 🤘

I worked many years on a Studer S33 (now Danobat Overbeck) and I can say there is no advantage by multi plunge grinding. Pedulum grinding is more efficient and a lot faster when you calculate the correct settings for dressing, feedrate, rpm,…

Ok I get the corrections but why the taper in the first place ? Can you expand Thanks 👍
@christophervillalpando58652 жыл бұрын
Taper happens for a number of reasons. You can grind one part straight change the setup and you might be close but not perfect on the next setup. Wheel breakdown can also cause a taper and that cant be fixed using the micro adjustments but in the dressing. Grinding is high precision and sometimes as tight as .0002 or tighter and grinding over a long width there's not much room for a variation. Hopefully this helps clear up the question you had. Great question!

It would be interesting to know the roughness of the surface finish after the grinding (Ra in micron). GG guys!
@christophervillalpando58652 жыл бұрын
Sorry we did not show that this time around but I had it checked after and it was a 7.8 Ra. Off camera I played with the dress and got it down to a 1.8RA for fun. Brushing the wheel and applying some preload to the wheel!
@Resnor2 жыл бұрын
If you are wondering about a micron conversion its roughly 0.2 and 0.05 the later being a super finish.
@avorock2 жыл бұрын
@@Resnor Thank you for the conversion :) What's the original measurement? Sorry for the ignorance but I work only with micron in Italy.
@avorock2 жыл бұрын
@@christophervillalpando5865 Wow, pretty good finish straght from the grinding, excellent work.
@Resnor2 жыл бұрын
@@avorock hi buddy. so Chris checked the surface finish at 7.8 micro inches. This converts to 0.198 um. This is the finish out of the machine. Like he said for fun they got it down to 1.8 micro inches or 0.045 um but thats not really a repeatable finish over many parts. 8u in or 0.2 um is considered a good grinding finish. Below that you are in super finishing territory.

What is the purpose of sparkout?
@christophervillalpando58652 жыл бұрын
It allows the wheel to dwell on the part and cleanup the grind. As it sparks out the pressure/deflection is released before it kicks the wheel out. Great question!
@fmgee1959 Жыл бұрын
It’s a good way to control geometry and size. If there’s pressure between the wheel and the workpiece, making adjustments can be like chasing a rabbit. The spark out allows predictable adjustments because the pressure between the surface was reduced as much as possible, eliminating a variable in the process. We were working on a tight tolerance taper and I’d have the grinder adjust his table to take a tenth of the front, a tenth off the back, two tenths off the back and on and on. I suggested taking five park out passes and it got the machine dialed in because the cutting pressure was throwing out the position of the part.
@rednecktech9485 Жыл бұрын
@@fmgee1959 Thank you for the excellent reply :)!

Why do you have coolant going on the head stock center? Doesn't need it since it is live. If the center was dead itd make sense. Have an S41 at work next to my grinder.

Does the machine have overload protection in case you misprogram your fast feed?
@christophervillalpando58652 жыл бұрын
It has a sensitron that picks up the actual grinding of the part. This is why its important to monitor the grinding and watch for burning or excessive feeds

Chris, two questions: Question 1: Can you explain, perhaps in a video, how it's decided when to re-dress the wheel? Question 2: Does your Studer have automatic wheel wear compensation?
@christophervillalpando58652 жыл бұрын
Question 1. Welcome to grinding sometimes a dress is needed after a few thousandths and sometimes it works better to let the wheel load up (The finish tends to get better after a few grinds). The biggest reason I use it for is to compensate for shoulder breakdown (to hold lengths), Radius breakdowns, and of course when the wheel is producing a bad finish, burning the part, or not grinding away what I adjusted for. Question 2: It does, it has its own wheel technology page that can give you all the information you need. Hope this helps! thanks for watching!
@Resnor2 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy! I am gonna talk in metric right now. You should re dress your wheel 0.03mm from size. This will reduce flecking and give you a better finish. But! if you want a better finish do the same in cycle dress but leave another 0.03 on the part. Finish the part with an oscillation of 0.3 at 30 with a dwell time of around 10 seconds. Very nice finish! wheel wear compensation? Dressing compensation yes on studers. If you wheel is wearing during grinding and a dress is not sorting this out then your wheel,speeds feeds,coolant need a look at.
@christophervillalpando58652 жыл бұрын
@@Resnor Great info you shared there! I see you in some other comments its cool to get some positive feedback and other tips. This is the platform to learn and teach on! I don't like to dress that close to size depending on the material and wheel it can easily cause the wheel to take off to much on the final approach because the wheel is sharp. But that's my own experience I've had better luck with dressing after the roughing, letting the wheel load up from the semi finish and then finish the part. Hope to see you around!

at first you brought the word OD in relation to the length correctly as proposed then at 10:15 you we have 5 inch OD. here you didn't specify a 5 inch taper length with the proposed taper. I knew what you meant, others may question or get confused, rightfully so.
