Fukuoka, Japan, October 1, 2019 - Bartosz Kurek scored 15 points as Poland downed Japan 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 19-25, 25-17) at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup on Wednesday.
Poland captain Bartosz Kurek: “Our mentality has always been the same. We always give our 100 per cent and don’t look on our opponents. The mentality doesn’t change whether we play Japan, the United States or Tunisia. We just go out there on the court and try to win every game.”
On being the captain of the team: “Yesterday was the first day in my experience as a player that I was captain of the team. Today’s just the second day but we really miss our captain - Michal Kubiak. He will join the team later.”
Poland player Norbert Huber: “We played better than Japan in this match. In crucial moments, we played better and knew how to push hard against our opponents.”
On how they won the match: “Besides the mental aspect, we were better in service and we had good reception. This was our key to the win.”
Japan coach Yuichi Nakagaichi: "We came in with a good atmosphere after last night’s victory. Poland is not just tall, they are also skilful. They are a good team with powerful players. We lost out in rallies. Their hitting and tipping won rallies. They made clever use of the techniques. Our service did not function as well. We could have gone a notch higher. I had to think hard about the matchups for tonight because I did not know which players they would have."
Japan captain Masahiro Yanagida: "The opposition’s passing and details were better. We made mistakes. We could not score on side-out, which is important. We need to make corrections."
Japan player Tatsuya Fukuzawa: "Their service and blocks decided the outcome. The recent trend in volleyball is that the higher the level, the better the service. We could compete with them in the first and third sets.:
Japan player Yuki Ishikawa: "Their service was good. We were disrupted and could not win side-outs. In the third set our block defence worked well."

Despite his smaller size compare to opposition players, Nishida’s jump & the way he curves his body inward is what makes his spike powerful.

@Davin Yu I'm not Japanese so I can't decide who is better. I was watching the match and them both and one more which name I forgot (I'm sorry for that, but I know it starts with 's') are really good and they deserve a lot in this sport. Maybe they don't have much tall but they have big spirit and they fit volleyball.

Bartosz Kurek played in a match against Japan for two reasons. The first reason was to check what form it is after a long illness? The second reason was the Japan-Italy match. The Japanese have shown that they are dangerous. They were good partners to play for Kurek. Polish trainer (Belgian) said that he must bring the Japanese (from the clouds) to Earth. And so it happened. If the Japanese lost the match against Italy, Kurek would probably not play in this match. For now, the reserve team played two matches (very experimental team). Several Polish basketball players have never played in the national team. They were not in tune with each other. There were fears that they would lose to a strong opponent. And yet they won. The main team for the time being rest after the European Championships. They will start playing later in the World Cup. Despite losing to Poland, the Japanese can be proud of their team.

You're right. Heynen mixes players from the A and B squad + KUREK. That was in the match against Japan. But he did not play LEON, KUBIAK and many other volleyball players from the A team. I think Heynen noticed that in the B team there are several high class volleyball players and he wants to use them skilfully. But it is good. Volleyball players don't have an easy life. There are still some long-running competitions. a few days after the European Championships the World Cup in Japan began. And volleyballers also play in clubs. It has been calculated that a good volleyball player has to play almost 100 games a year. One team is not enough to play at serious events (and still have time to rest, regenerate strength and trainings).
