Watching this clip I understand why a little boy called Wilbert Audrey liked to think trains were chatting when they whistled to each other. We all know what it led to.

Cool2BCeltic Not only when they are whistling! I, as Awdry himself did when he was small, still think that all steam engines are alive and have their very own personality (I'm 17, and definitely not crazy😅!) In the puffing sound of the 14xx, you can hear "Do come along, do come along!" It's all about your fantasy!

One of the first movies I ever set my eyes on, and truly happy that it was a wholesome and happy move as such as this, absolutely amazing movie, and a spectacle of a lost world of steam travel and local railways connecting small communities together. Love it all!

Fun fact: the Bullied Pacific actually made the lineside catch fire just when she went out of shot!

You can now cycle where the upper track used to be. The lower track is simply countryside again. Brilliant film, beautiful place.

The Train hauled by the Bullied is a local train! because recently in the S&DJR Special edition of Model Rail Magazine, it showed that local trains were composed of a Maunsell 3 set (2 BCK's and one CK), strenghtened with a Maunsell SK and a van for mail or parcel traffic...

@sightscreen66 One of the "Steam On 35mm" videos (I think volume 2) has some colour outtakes from the film. One clip shows this scene filmed the day before, but the branchline train emerges just a little too late so the film crew had to return the same time next day. The Bulleid-hauled train was a regular service so there was only one take per day, with the sun at the right angle etc.

They must have taken care to work out the timings so that as the S & D train was approaching Midford from Bath, the driver of the 14xx got the nod to start moving, to emerge from under the viaduct exactly as the S & D train went over.

@Cool2BCeltic Beeching didn't actually close this line - it was already closed when they made the film, which was 10 years before he was appointed!

@cleckheatoncentral Well it has to be admitted progress had to have its day but Dr Beeching's mutiliation of the British railway network went too far. The reopening of the Alloa line and the partial reopening of the Waverley route demonstrate that he was somewhat mistaken.

Beautiful part of the world with some lovely characters. Here's to the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway and to a pint in the Hope and Anchor :)

Quite like the 14xx's whistle. May not sound very realistic, but nice!
