Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Indeed the issue of tithes brings debate among the children of God. The reason for so much debate stems from four issues: 1) lack of understanding of scriptures. 2) Dishonesty by some pastors in teaching the subject. Some lack understanding on the matter, some are motivated by greed and so teach with wrong motives. Some however teach the truth. 3) Stinginess by congregants. 4) Lack of revelation knowledge from God. Churches are run by people. If people lie to congregants, this lie or omission may go for generations. This is why as a child of God it is best to always study scripture and ask God for direction where you are not sure. Your Pastor's mistake or omission is not a defense before God on the judgement day. If you check in the bible, the tithe existed under 3 periods 1) Before the law Genesis 14 Vs 1-20 (2) Under the law (Malachi, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy,....etc.) (3) Under New Testament: Matthew 23:23, Hebrew 7:8 etc So tithing operated under the law but its a way of worshipping God that existed before the law and still exists even outside the law, under new testament. Jesus says He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfil the law- Mathew 5 Vs 17-20. The blood of Jesus took away the sin offering as He became the offering. We are however expected to tithe and bring offerings to the house of God. We do this out of love for what God has done rather than fear which is in old testament. In new testament if you check, the believers were so grateful to God for his goodness to the extend that the measure was more than 10%. Indeed 10% is a beginners' level. when your relationship with God grows, you will realise that everything belongs to Him and the actual amount should be 100%. Now this is a long topic which will need explanations on the matter of grace as well. Unfortunately my time is limited. I however urge you to dig dipper into this matter. I pray that you go beyond the level of church doctrines but rather seek the truth as the truth will set you free. May God guide you.

Yes, Malachi 3 Vs 8 is directed to Israelites who were under the law. However, tithing and offerings were were forms of worship that existed before the law (Genesis 14 Vs 18-20, Genesis 28 Vs 22) and still exist under grace. They became part of the law but are expected from a Christian even under grace. If we were not expected to tithe under grace, then by the same reasoning, we would not be expected to bring offerings to the house of God as well. The fact that churches still bring offerings to the house of God shows you that even under grace, the principle of tithes and offerings still holds. The only difference between tithing under the law and under grace is the motivation. Under the law, fear of punishment was the motivation but under grace, our love for God is the motivation. Our love is a perfect response to the salvation won by Christ for us. Now if you read Matthew 23:23 in a hurry, you will most likely read the 1st part and come up with the wrong conclusion. If however you read it with a heart that seeks the truth, you will realise that Jesus is not saying do not tithe. 23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone." Jesus is castigating the Pharisees who have the attitude that if they tithes, all is well- yet they neglect other duties of a child of God. Just like faith without works is dead, Jesus is saying tithing without other components is not good. If you check, Jesus says, "These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone." So in other words, he did not dismiss tithing but rather saying, on top of tithing do not fail to be just, show mercy and faith. Hebrews chapter 7 compares the Levitical priesthood to that of Melchisedec and says the Priesthood of Jesus is after the priesthood of Melchisedec and not of Aaron. So in short, if Melchisedec represented Jesus, and received the tithe from Abraham. We, as the children of Abraham, who gave the tithe to Melchisedek, must also give the tithe to Jesus who is our Melchisedek. Hebrews chapter 7 vs 8 (KJV), talks about how 'here men that die (God's representatives) receive tithes but in Heaven (in spirit) Jesus receives the tithe'. We kindly request you to pray more on this subject as there is so much confusion out there even among the pastors. May you also kindly revisit the issue of grace and check if the doctrine that you were taught was 100% sound.
