They are not taking anything- they are expanding on lore of Tolkein. Who never mentioned the backstory of the the mortal men doomed to die, or the dwarves that greedily took the rings from the great deceiver. This expansion is through the means of television which takes inspiration from the source material. As an audiance you can take that vision and use it for a wider history of middle earth or simply enjoy it and go back to the source material. Television and movies are NOT meant to be be the books - there's is a difference.
@MultiMoe112 жыл бұрын
@@husman2007 There is an entire book on the lore before the Lord of the rings and the hobbit this is another cash grab by a corrupt company to ruin a story with their take on it when their is established lore. @sameehkins59572 жыл бұрын
@@MultiMoe11 Correction! There are actually several books written by Tolkien that expands on the lore. Silmarillion is one of them, but the the show wont be so heavily based on that as that book only covers a small part of the second age. Most of Silmarillion is First Age stuff (which is huge and really eventful). Unfinished Tales is another book by Tolkien which expands in detail the Fall of Numenor, which this show is going to climax on as its the biggest event in the second age. The Hobbit doesnt expand on MIddle Earth history as much, Neither does the main text of LOTR. The LOTR appendices however, cover a lot of history which the amazon show will also use as source material too. So far, the show is using a small handful of chapters of Silmarillion, all of Unfinished Tales, and majority of LOTR appendices. Sounds like a lot of source material there. Even so, stuff like what happened to the dwarves with their rings arent highlighted by Gandalf. He just said they gave in to their greed. The show will likely expand on thus and show it. This is no different than Peter Jackson changing the properties of the ghost army by making them able to kill people and kill the whole orc army. In the books, the ghosts cant physically touch anyone, they only scare off some of the Umbar ships coming from the south but they never fight, let alone fighting on the fields of Pelanor and winning the battle for the humans. The movies make it so that the men of middle earth always need help and never win anything by themselves. In the books, the men won the battle with no help from silly ghosts.
@husman20072 жыл бұрын
@@MultiMoe11 "There's is an entire book on the lore before The Lord of The Rings..." please point out at what point did I say Tolkien didn't. What my comment stated was that they are expanding on the lore by covering the parts of the stories Tolkein didn't, which was the mortal men that took the rings that consumed them into darkness. They are also using Tolkeins literature from the second age to SHOW us the beauty of the lore he created. Again, these are two different mediums of story telling. As for The Hobbits, nothing to do with Amazon or the people working on it. Besides, they weren't expanding the lore when they made The Hobbit movies, because that story was told by Tolkein in it's entirety and as such, it should have been a one and done movie. Nonetheless, it has nothing to do with Amazon and it is a pointless argument the you're making.

Tolkien drew upon the mythologies and languages of Northern Europe, specifically Celtic, Scandinavian, Anglo-Saxon, and Finnish, when writing the Silmarillion. He had a passion for Icelandic sagas and Old Norse, the language of the Vikings. And he described the peoples of Middle-earth (Midgard) in great detail. All of the elves are described as having Northern European features. This is in keeping with the source material and the fact that Tolkien felt that he was writing a mythology of England. There is mention of dark elves, but dark here means not having seen the light of Aman. It does not refer to skin color. Certainly, all of the characters that enter the stories are European in appearance and speak languages inspired by Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, and Finnish. The Silmarillion is Tolkien's vision of the myths and culture of Northern Europe. He was an expert and was fluent (to the extent one can be with a dead language) in Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse. He simply had a passion for the people, languages, and legends of Northern Europe, and there is nothing wrong with that.

@@queenberuthiel5469 I mean, this is how the poem has always gone. You think Galadriel shouldn’t read it because it’s conflating kings and queens? The poem must either refer to either Gil-galad and Galadriel OR Elrond, Cirdan, and Galadriel. They all have titles, king or lord or lady or princess or similar. Kings rhymes, and it’s the famous poem. I wouldn’t be confused by Galadriel reciting it. Perhaps after reciting she may say “not technically accurate, as I’m not a king.” But also remember this is a translation from Westron into English. So perhaps Westron has a word that encompasses their various royal titles and fits the rhyme scheme, but English doesn’t and so we get “kings” as it’s reasonably close and rhymes with “rings”.

"Mordor" isn't an English word. It's mispronounced in the film trilogy, which treat it like one. Morfydd Clark is fluent in Welsh, and Sindarin is based on Welsh, which means her pronunciation of Sindarin words are far more accurate. I think the only person in the films that sort of pronounces "Mordor" correctly is Elrond's actor. Similarly, plenty of other Sindarin and/or Quenya names are mispronounced in the movies.

I grew up on the novels and read them multiple times. The original trilogy was a masterpiece of filmmaking. But after the unmitigated disaster of Amazon's handling of the WoT series,I am very hesitant to get my hopes too high for this venture.

Amazon announced that it will break canon with Tolkien’s lore, so that already kind of ruins it for me. There is so much in the Silmarillion and Return of the King Appendixes, they have so much to work with that’s adaptable, and their favoring of what appeals the best to casual fans is just as much of a mockery of Tolkien fans as orcs are a mockery of elves. Amazon IS the enemy, in so many ways, and the irony is just incredible

Okay I came back here because I thought I was going crazy. This is an amazing title sequence; they even showed us it was painstakingly produced with real element. Why, WHY is this not used in the show!??? The shows title sequence is abstract and doesn’t feel connected to anything. This would have been PERFECT. Lord of the missed opportunities.

I'm glad it has a title that won't be too confusing for people who are just hearing about this or just getting into Tolkien. If I remember correctly, a chapter from the Silmarillion had this very name for one of its chapters regarding the 2nd Age. I really want it to be good. I have some concerns, but I want it to succeed. I think it's about time they reveal to us a proper trailer tho. We've been in the dark for far too long now, and the show will release September 2022. In Durin's name, what are we waiting for?

@@conorsullivan6968 I am aware of that. That is why I said "a chapter". It isn't much, but it is sort of a nod to the book, besides actually making the show separate itself from the Lotr trilogy. We don't want people to continue to believe that it's a remake :P
