Be it comedy or drama Gobbi is quite simply a superb actor. He is totally in character, savoring and relishing the proceedings to the full. No wonder he was such a favorite with Callas. ---Audio dreadful.

Most men could sing tenor or baritone...it’s just a different technique/resonance strategy. Read Caruso’s book. Voice type aren’t scholastic deliberations, voices should be able to sing across fach... In fact well developed women show difference from tenor and soprano chest voice isn’t always a big difference...

Why crazy about Gobbi? Because he was an absolutely wonderful opera performer and knew how to command a big stage. As Macbetto, Rodrigo, Falstaff, Iago, & Scarpia all heard live he was brilliant both to watch and to listen to. This sound sadly is very distorted and gives no idea what he was like.

Oh, I believe he just changed his singing a little when he was singing Scarpia for example. On the other hand, this recording is from 1946 and if you compare him here to the CD with Callas and di Stefano, you have about 20 years in between. Nevertheless, an outstanding performance. As usual for Gobbi. ^^

Why is everybody so crazy about Gobbi? These were operas made for the movies and a lot of these colors and affectations would never carry on a big stage....and Thomas Hampson takes it just as fast if not faster and better.

Terribly high recording speed. I don't think the orchestra plays a semitone higher. The color of tonality is lost here. Largo al factotum im C#! and, unfortunately this recording doesn't let me hear the glory you say Gobbi is. I prefer actual baritones.

hahaha, the teacher of Robert Davi: scoundrel in Raw Deal, know-it-all in Die hard I, and got blasted out of the sky for it and otherheavies... This is so free, maybe because it is an Italian singing and virtuosic in the best sense, and also very funny!
