Gobbi is the best Giovanni for me. colorful voice, darkly seductive

Yes, no other Don even comes close to Tito Gobbi's arrogant snarl and nuanced interpretation. The only one who MIGHT have a claim is John Brownlee. But not really.

Ramey is a fine actor and a beautiful bass. I saw him in San Francisco, at an open rehearsal, wearing ordinary clothing (bluejeans). But he doesn't have Gobbi's snarl or sense of taking childish pleasure in hurting other people. And Ramey sounds more rehearsed than Gobbi; Gobbi always sounds like he's thinking the lines for the first time rather than singing something he has learned and studied. Also, Ramey sounds like an older person than the Don should be. @bodiloto's hater

@@ColonelFredPuntridge Gobbi's voice was considerably larger than Ramey's. Ramey recorded extremely well. Yes, it was a beautiful voice, but when I did hear him in the theater I was disappointed to find that his voice was not nearly as big as it sounded on records.

@@photo161 Yes. Gobbi was a _bona fide_ old-school-technique singer. Ramey is a product of the differential-miking/electronic-editing age. The art of athletic singing is not quite dead, but it's on a ventilator for sure.

This is pretty much the greatest thing since sliced bread (Gobbi ,Seefried). Thank You for posting.

Perfect tempo. Like Ferrando and Fiordiligi at the end of Cosi fan Tutte, they blend in the seduction and once Don Giovanni has conquered in the first part, it appropriately speeds up in the second.

che eleganza nel porgere!Veramente traspare il desiderio del libertino. Fantastico!

Always love Seefried, but he sounds harsh and shouty rather than seductive...and her German accent here..though endearing even here...shows well. Still got to give a thumbs up. Ain't nobody doing this now, accents, shouts and all. Better than the blandness now available

This role is for bass, not a light baritone. I cannot get it; could not they find a bass? I have the top basses, who have done this role, in my mind, and so, I cannot digest Tito Gobbi. He tries a lot of histrionics in his voice, but still does not render the role. Sorry!
