The best response to the mean hearted unhappy people, there's not ONE boat on the water that's has not being influenced by earlier designs , if we followed the critics we would still be using coracles or a hollowed out log ! Thank you Mr Spira.

I love this little rowing dory. I built a little wheel set typical for walking kayaks to get to and from the Willamette River so I can row.

Just a note on the word origin, there's an old city in central England called Gloucester and it's pronounced Gloster. Same as Worcester pronounced wuster and Warwick is pronounced worick, Leicester is lester etc. Lovely video

Don’t know who built a boat I had a few years ago but had it some many never knowing how much I miss it till it was gone but here I’ll try to describe it as yours is similar both ends were pointed probably as much as possible for a 1/2” plank board could be but the bottom was cup like a saucer plate an it would slice through the water with a 24thrust trolling motor you gave me a lot of ideas watching how the stitch an glue works hopefully this winter I will complete mine from memories thank you for sharing

That's a real nice boat Jeff, I am a nflder and I use to fish on the exploits river for salmon in a dory when I was young. I lived at the falls.

A wider floor and lower sides and you would essentially have a Louisiana pirogue. I've built several and they paddle really well with a kayak double paddle.

Practical Boat Owner had plans and building instructions for something similar to this in the 1980's. My father built one. A great little seaboat. You have to sit right in the bottom to keep the COG as low as possible, or else it felt a bit tippy. He put a little 2hp engine on for long distance work. It was very fast even with this tiny engine.

I still have that PBO issue here with me as I always wanted to build one but never found the time. That same article has a chart with several variable the builder could apply too so that it could be built for various uses. Always loved these Spira boats and their various plans though. I'm too long in the tooth now though.

If your boat is Tippy .... Put a 2-3 inch Keel on it ! ..... It wood help with tracking , stability and protect the bottom ... Run it from the back to the nose ....... Great Show !
@tjkid073 жыл бұрын
A keel won't stop the static stability. "tippiness" has nothing to do with keel or no keel.
@beyondthis74 жыл бұрын
The smaller and lighter the dory... the less stable it becomes... setting the seat way down is the way to get the ballast where it's needed. I've watched this video several times now, and I think watching the man climb in to row away (and noting his seat height as quite low), convinces me this boat would be just a little too tender for me. I love that it's made of 2 pieces of ply, but if it were an option, I'd buy another piece to widen out the bottom and increase stability. Is that an option? Do you have a more stable version of this in stitch and glue with a wider bum???

I love your boats. Do you know of any designs for a small row and sailing boat that would fit on a 12x5 foot balcony of a 1 bedroom apartment?

Hahaha I'd like to build The Frugalman sailing dinghy sourced from Home Depot, Harbor Freight, e.t.c.

Hi Jeff, I am keen to build this boat. What is the purpose of the two seating positions?If you wanted to carry two people wouldnt you move the seat forward and then have an aft seat for the passenger for balanc e ? Thanks
@tjkid074 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter that much. Many have been built with two seats.

I would love to add a dagger board and small 35 sq ft gaff sail to this design. Would an eight foot mast with 5 ft gaff and boom require outriggers for stability?
@tjkid073 жыл бұрын
