I kinda love the 2014 Energon Optimus and Omega repaints they did. Optimus looks like his solo robot mode deco was prioritized; Omega looks great in G1 colors and honestly makes me wish we’d get another “amalgam” toy with the Energon body and the G1 noggin.

Wait, bringing up TM2 Megs now has me confused. Why did they choose Steel-wait the design. TM2 Megatron is a Western dragon, while Steelbane was Eastern/Chinese. That's actually pretty dang smart

I thought Year of the snake was pretty clever with Omega's alt node somewhat resembling a snake. Its a cool way to incorporate the Chinese zodiac theme without just simply taking a transformer that directly has that alt mode. I wish they could have used those subtle homages in more figures. Maybe make Unicron or Armada Megatron year of the Goat because of those big horns present in both modes. Perhaps making Barricade year of the horse would be neat because his car mode is a mustang. Heck making Grimlock year of the rooster would been kind of clever since Chickens are said to have split off from Dinosaurs.

I tried fitting the Maximals from Neo to be the zodiacs. It's rough but I think it's good. 1.Bump as the rat. Armadillos are just Turtle rats, I think this one is fine. 2.Sharp Edge as the ox. SE transformed into a saw Shark, I feel like you could reuse the name for an Ox in reference to it's horns. 3.Survive as the tiger. Bears and tigers have similar ecological niches so it's forgivable. 4.Stampy as the rabbit. Stampy is literally the only TF rabbit. 5.Longrack as the dragon. The chinese dragon has a long neck and so do giraffes. 6.Cohlada as the serpent. Cobras are serpents. 7.Mach Kick as the horse. This one is a slam dunk. 8.Big Convoy as the goat. Goats have horns like Mammoth tusks and they have thick coats like Mammoth a too. 9.Rockbuster as the monkey. There is a species of crab called the monkey crab, alternatively there is a species of monkey called the crab-eating Macaque and there is a japanese story about a monkey and a crab. 10.Break as the rooster. Penguins and roosters are both birds. 11. Heinrad as the dog. He turns into a racoon dog, Easy enough. 12. Randy as the pig. Randy turns into a hog and that's basically a pig.

Concerning Year of the Dragon, it does make sense to omit dragons like TM2 Megatron, since it's more fitting to have a Chinese dragon for a Chinese themed release.

1. God I hope Crimsonflame gets a release outside of China. It’s honestly one of the coolest retools I’ve seen for TF in awhile. Plus it’s a new dragonformer and that is always cool. 2. Guess it’s time to wait and see if we get another one for Year of the Snake, though unless something nutty comes out between now and then, or I’m forgetting something, I have no idea who they could retool into a snake to match this style. Though to be fair, I could see this being a one-off cause dragons are cool and would sell well regardless, and it could be just a celebratory thing with the new year circle looping from when they first started doing this. And 3. If I were to have any request if these were to continue besides the matching styles of the robots, is similar naming conventions. I love that stuff for some reason. Like, Crimsonflame, color + thing involving the animal. Snake could be like, Violetpoison, or horse could be, Silverspeed. I don’t know, food for thoughts.

Retooling TM2 Megatron to a Chinese dragon is harder than retooling Steelbane from TLK to a Chinese dragon

I hope they do stick to it this cycle and I also hope there's an easy way to get that Crimsonflame because it looks SICK. And, as someone who owns both Year of the Goat releases, their clear plastic is pretty thick, it does feel sturdy. the hoses on Prime did crumble, though.

As unlikely as it is, it would be cool to justify making new figures of characters like Ramulus, Wolfang, and Stampy (Or Moon) by tying them to the Chinese New Year.

Year of the horse is the ones I went in on. I got starscream on the shelf. I hate it as a giant but man this would look great on the voyager. I later got prime second hand and Its easily one of my favorite figures that I own.

It's hillarious to me that there is a beastformer for almost every Chinese Zodiac and they almost never actually pick a mold that represents that animal. Maybe they stopped cause they just weren't selling. And considering we actually got a Chinese Dragon this year hopefully for this new run of Year of figures we'll actually get molds that make sense.

Now that I think about it, Year o' the Rooster could have given us Sky Lynx the original or Sky Garry, God Ginrai or even Deathsaurus' original mold since if they want something big and flies. Or a Battlestars Rodimus we coulda gotten. Year of the Tiger also coulda given us a proper Liokaiser or even a redone Liokaiser with a retooled POTP Starscream as the chest or Predaking again depending on either the TF 2010 redeco or his POTP design. Maybe we coulda called this 'Year Wild' considering the sheer power of both combiners if they were released out into the Year of the Tiger. Year of the Goat woulda been Brave Maximus considering he hits like a ram most of the time. 'shrugs' Or Ox. He has them horns after all. Year of the OX coulda also given us a Star Convoy tbh. Year of the dragon could have given us Dai Atlas and his Powered Master team - Legends or the original G1 toys with color specific aesthetics homaging their recolors from a certain Brave series. Hint hint. Or they coulda given us BW 2 Galvatron and Gigastorm - the twin dragon brothers from hell. Or a Battlestars Grimlock we coulda gotten.

My brother was really big on these. He has the Energon Optimus, Omega Supreme, and Cybertron Starscream. He also randomly bought me the Beast Machines Optimus Primal a few years ago. That toy currently is sitting in box in my attic. 😂

Yeah, this was disappointing. I get it, Hasbro was interested in redeco an existing mold for LNY. But it took a lazy idea and then felt it couldn't be bothered to even do that. If it were me, I'd have a deluxe, a voyager, a leader and a special for each year. The deluxe would be a red version of the workhorse molds (the Sideswipe Lambo, the Seeker/Tetrajet, etc. Some thing you already have but really cut loose with the paint apps. The voyager should rotate between the evergreen characters. I can see Optimus, but not every year, once every 4 should suffice. Same with Soundwave, Bumblebee and Starscream. I don't think you'll have get a year of the Boar Megatron. The special would be a small (normally Legends class figure) scaled up to deluxe. This would be the zodiac animal. Put in some effort Hasbro!

Year of the Monkey Optimus Primal is the only figure I've actually seen in person before and I almost got it because I never did own the original version of the mold and I actually love BM Primal in the G1 colors looks so much better than he ever did in his show accurate colors, but then I saw the price tag and realized between inflation for the mold and the exclusive nature of the paint job that he had be marked way up beyond my budget. And what's really bad is the figure when I saw it had actually been marked DOWN from the original price because it shelf warmed and was still outside my budget.
