This is a fantastic series. I didn't even know about Money Wars! I had to rewatch to see if I blinked and missed mention of Battle Mode. It was a 1990 Gainax-produced CM made for an anime shop called Parody. Gainax released it on home video (padding the CM variants with a making-of short) and the cover sleeve can briefly be seen behind Tanaka-kun when he's explaining how "garage video" can work. I only saw it due to some old contacts having deep tape-trading connections that would make Tanaka's circle proud!

Thank you so much for all your hard work putting this series together. It inspired me to finally watch Gunbuster, which I absolutely loved because of how thoroughly time dilation was weaved into the story. I'm excited to watch the final episode, good luck with completing it.

I still find it insane how series like Gunsmith Cats are flying under the radar until this day.

Leaving a comment for the algorithm, but also because of the recent news about Gainax filing for bankruptcy. Honestly, while most probably have found/seen you for your GitCY/George videos (kinda like how I did), I've really enjoyed how in-depth but knowledgeable each video is. Specifically with filling us in on context (e.g. origins of otaku culture and the term itself) and behind-the-scene details. I do wonder how youre gonna handle the period between after Nadia and eventually Gainax's/Anno's fameous show, Neon Genesis Evangelion. I dont blame you if you just mostly refer to other videos for certain elements, lol. Though it would be interesting looking into the behind-the-scene elements. For example, the original concept/plans of NGE being an OVA with another female main character (and being called something like "Alcion"). That or how episode 4 (the one where Shinji runs awa) was made to further explore the minds of Shinji and Misato and their conflicts. Iirc, another staff member suggested Ep 4 to be like this. I know theres also the games Gainax made (at least until they just had other comapnies make them). And a few commercials and two music videos (which I sadly forgot the names of but I wouldn't mind looking it up for you).

@TJTheEmperor Oh don't skip straight to their Princess Maker game (12:25). They brought in money earlier than that with the Silent Mobius and Battle Skin Panic games. BSP in particular is still ultra-expensive because people will never sell their copies of it, it's hidden away in closets all over Japan because it's too pervy. But it sold so well there's 5 editions of it, got ported around: PC-88, PC-98 (both boxed and vending machine), PC-9821 and MSX versions. Definitely was a cash cow for them at a time they needed it. And much of the staff never bring it up out of embarrassment.

I’m pretty sure I went into more detail about most of Gainax’s other games in the episode about Nadia. I only mentioned Princess Maker here in passing since it’s probably still their best known game from that time

@@TJTheEmperor No worries, it's been a bit since I watched the earlier parts, I'll have to do a full re-watch. Your efforts are definitely appreciated. ;D

This is the best episode in the series so far. Really great weaving of Gainax, Otaku No Video, and American fandom. Also shout out project Akon. He had some great songs in the 00s

It’s my favorite of the series too. There’s a lot of stuff I wanted to weave in, and I wasn’t sure I could do it justice, but I made it happen (I’M SO GREAT I KNOW)

It's been years since I last geeked about gainax (anime in general), can't wait for future episodes. I'm exited for Eva, TTGL, FLCL, and trigger. Also, Trigger is cooking with dungeon meshi rn and they might do a "gainax ending"

otaku no video was weird , when i was younger i interpreted as a negative criticism of otaku and the main character arc seemed to be one one were he becomes a shut in weirdo loser, its made af if it is one of those drug PSAs. Is only knowing all the context around it that you realize a lot of it is ironic and that the underlying message is more uplifting, the interviews are very obviously fake and played for laughs as well as the statistics, but i didn't know that when i was younger, i was really baffled not getting why an anime studio would make a scathing hit piece against anime fans like that.

I have ADVs release of the Nadia movie DVD, and yeah, it was pointless and not good. But I did keep it when I sold the TV series DVDs because its out of print and I'd never want to re-buy it even if it wasn't.
